Okay!
Classic 'I'm better than you' wank! She has some points but... "I'll publish my short stories, eventually my novels, and turn into the kind of writer the gets horrible bad-porn fic written about her characters. And if I see ANY of that, I will hunt you down and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law."

All I have to say to her is, okay!

You know, I don't think she really has to worry about anyone writing fic about anything she may actually eventually publish.

Not because she's so very intimidating, but because she's so very, well, boring.

"The defense would like to present old stories written by the prosecution. Which involves other people's characters doing naughty things."

Was that much steaming vitriol really necessary to say 'hey, can I have some plot over here?' Also, I have no idea who she's ranting at. Smut writers? People who write non-con? Anyone who includes explicit sex in a story? The kink people?

And she's threatening her fans in a Rice-ian fashion before she even has any? Hell, I cross my fingers and pray that if I ever get my novel finished and published, there's fanfic. If there was, I promise I'd be digging through like a kid in a candy store to see if anyone wrote any of my royal brothers having incestuous nookie. Or cross-species slash. Or a terrible Mary Sue having it off with all and sundry. Just imaging what would be possible gets me all gigglesome.

Or I could create another online nick and try to become my own Cassandra Claire! And con SlashCat into flaming all the crap. Mwahahaha. Although anyone who told anybody (except the Claire identity) "you write those characters better than [Diamonde's real name]!" would be in for one hell of a bitchslappin', because I hate that.

Yup. I'm a raging egomaniac. But at least I don't think people should stop writing sex, for fuck's sake.

I'm starting to get a complex here reading all these negative commentaries on slash and the assumption that we are all naive teenies or old perverts.

I mean, if I didn't know better I'd be worried I'm getting too old for fandom.

Has fanfiction become more explicit over the years? I can't recall the online trend changing in the last 7 years.

Or is this person referring only to the X-Files? I'm so confused.

*shrugs*

Yaaaay, I'm not the only person who does this. Of course, I don't plan to get published; it's just a happy lil' daydream.

Anyway. Yes. I don't think it's egotistical.

Obviously, everyone ever who writes PWP and/or slash reads her LJ diligently. Yup.

There's more constructive ways to try and remedy what she percieves as a "problem". How about a gen archive site? Or a contest for best gen? Or writing one herself, making it as good as she can (*cough*), and pimp the hell out of it?

Personally, if I were in the shoes of an actual published, popular author, I'd probably just take the fanfictioning as a compliment, and as reassurance that I'd written the story well enough to have people care about the characters and what happens to them.

Not that I wouldn't be a bit squicked to see the adults having sex with the children, Spanish Fly magic spells, and "teh hawt" animal husbandry action, but hey... as long as they're giving me the money from the book sales, I could basically take just about anything.

Except maybe BNFs squawking about how they write "the TRUE canon". That one gets right under my skin.

That gets up my nose too. The point of fanfic is to work with the real canon. In cases like comic books where there are lot of writers and divergent histories you can fudge and squeeze bits, but it's still the canon you've got. Even if it is self-contradictory.

And if Rowling chooses to shit between two notebook pages and call it book six, well, it's book six and the One True Canon. Hard to work with, but that's not her problem.

If I ever got fanfic for anything I'd written, I'd be of two minds: first, amused, because there's nothing better than reading canon-rape if you're the one who wrote the canon yourself; and second, more than a little offended, because it seems like a mark of disrespect for something I worked to improve until I got it as close to perfect as it could reasonably get.

Honestly, how would you like it if someone took something of yours that you really treasured, but decided it would be much, much better if all the characters acted like teenaged girls and also had lots of implausible buttsex? Moving on to a better class of fanfic, what if someone took some minor point and spun it out into a 300-page whopper that made it into fanon, so now all Character A ever really wanted was a hug, even though it's been well established by his behavior in the book that even though he's genuinely affectionate to Character B, he also thoroughly enjoys being a snarky prick to said character? And as for slashing those characters, I like gay porn as much as the next person (perhaps more), but if the author in question is any good, he/she will have made a conscious decision regarding the characters' sexuality, rather than just setting them to default het. If he/she made characters straight for a reason, then isn't it a bit disrespectful to make them size queens just because you think they would look cute doing the Sunday Times crossword in bed? Likewise pairing up het characters for the same reason, or resolving some of that UST with sweet, sweet Mulder/Scully pr0n--if you really wanted to read a romance, why didn't you just make your own instead of obsessing over casual glances and brief pats on the back? And who the hell are you to "improve" someone else's work just so you can like it better? I grant you of course that no work is perfect and that a good editor is worth his weight in lox, but this is well past the constructive criticism stage. This is like the studio cutting up the ending to Brazil to make it happier because that stupid git Gilliam didn't know what his audience REALLY wanted.

If any of this happened to me, I would consider it akin to my fans saying that it wasn't good enough the way it was. Criticism I can handle, surely, but second-guessing like that--by people who swear they're fans--is another matter entirely. I can almost guarantee that the Comics Journal would hate what I wrote, but they certainly wouldn't insult my work by rewriting it the way they preferred it.

Heh...I think I need a wetnap.

First when did HENRY JEKYLL become a slash superstar?

Why don't fics like that get read? I don't know maybe because [IMO] 80% of the time they're mind-numbingly BORING? That in many cases they're just a way for the author to prove how much 'better' they are then the sex seeking masses? Because having a sex drive doesn't make one a pervert?

Just my thoughts.

Now let's think here for a moment. The stories with sex get read because... well... sex is fun. And the stories that don't include sex don't get read because... ? Perhaps I just exist in very bookish fandoms (Les Mis, admittedly), but slash and graphic sex of other varieties is like the poor cousin of the fanfic family. I write fic almost exclusively about obscure supporting characters and ::gaspshock!:: it gets read, because people are interested in the characters, regardless of what sex is or is not involved. All I can say is that man, her fic must be PAINFULLY boring if she has that much trouble getting people to read it.
