Note: All parties are being wanky, yes. I was choosing to focus on the poster's point of view rather than all sides. I'm just going to say it's wank and leave it at that.

Er is it bad for me to agree with her?

I mean yeah her spelling is horrible but I have to agree with her point, It's an ICON get over it.

I mean cause it's not possible that someone else made a similar icon, or that icon making is long, hard arduous work.

True she could use more tact when defending herself, and spellchecker wouldn't hurt, but my inner bitch thinks the TRUE wank of this is the folks having a hissy fit about 'stealing' icons.

My take YMMV.

/me agrees.

And the person who /made the icon in question/ made the least wanky post in the whole thread. Her overly-defensive friends sure are worried about her stolen blurry nipple pic, though.

I don't agree with her, but I do think all parties involved are being wanky.

It IS just an icon, but since they are not long, hard arduous work, she could make her own or ask someone else to make her one. Or at least ask to use someone else's icon first since that's the courteous thing to do, with the added bonus that you don't get dumb stuff like this happening.

{Or at least ask to use someone else's icon first since that's the courteous thing to do, with the added bonus that you don't get dumb stuff like this happening.}

Not true. There was a wank posted about a week or so ago about two people who basically had the same icon, they both made it from a pic out of the Inu-Yasha manga. And one person threw a complete hissy fit and accused the other of 'stealing' the icon. Even though the other person had it longer, and it was coinicdence.

So we are all part of the Great Circle of Wank.

I guess, but if you made a similar icon you wouldn't have to ask because you made it yourself. I suppose I was talking about the cases where people do take an icon.

{ I suppose I was talking about the cases where people do take an icon.}

The issue there is how do you PROVE it? I mean how do you know they 'stole' it from you? It could simply be a coinicidence, or they could've gotten it from someone else, or made it themselves.

Of course if the icon is personalized in some way, with like you're name on it then you can claim theft, but really how do you know it's not a coinicidence and how can you prove that they took something?

Well, if you've modified the original picture in a specific/unique way, that's one way to tell. I had a Get Fuzzy comic icon once that someone swiped, and it was obvious that she didn't do it herself because of the way I took part of the original picture to cover up some text I didn't want showing on the icon. (as an aside, that was an amusing incident, actually. I'd dig it up but it was on the RSS feed for the commic and they only keep about two weeks worth. I'm sure someone would find it wanky though.)

I guess if someone says they made it themself there's not much you can do because they probably won't take it down. But a lot of the time in these cases the people did take them, freely admit to it, and are just being asshats about it.

So the test of wankiness is all in how you handle it, whether you're the "stealer" or the "stolen from."

sometimes you can't, and sometimes you can. there are infinite variations you can make to an image, and if you've done something specific to it besides just cropping the image to a certain size, it's pretty easy to tell by examining the two side-by-side.

On the one hand, bringing your twenty friends to flame someone in their journal for icon theft is pretty wanky.

On the other hand, the first post was a polite request for attribution, and she was incredibly rude about it.

There is a culture on livejournal, and part of it says that it's polite to credit icons when they're borrowed, or to ask before doing so. She violated social norms and was bitchy about being called on it. Is it a silly social norm? Maybe. But complaining about being called on it is about as dumb as the high school kids that dress as weirdly as they can and then complain when people stare at them.

(Me, I think the "you unfriended meeee!" kefluffles are sillier than the "hey that's my icon" kerfluffles, but they seem to come from the same general source.)

Oh I agree the wank is coming from both sides here, I just think bringing in the Flame Brigade over an icon is the wankier side. But I agree the poster was rude and she should've beena bit more tactful about the situation.

[Though I can understand her crabbiness, it seems like every friggin week someone pitchs a fit over ICON THEFT!]

But that's just my take on the situation, feel free to interupt as you will.

It was a 15 second icon though, tops. Cap, resize, shaky camera filter--BAM.

I could make a race out of it, except I don't want to make a nipple icon. Though I made one out of a vagina. But it's a f_wank vagina icon!

That icon is almost surreal, man. I mean, it almost looks like a cartoon bird with a beak, but when you look closer, then you realize it's a vagina.

Then there's also the (rather nice-seeming) ass in the pic. That and the thighs kinda mess around with your mind some more.

That's it, I'm calling it an ass-bird from now on.

It's an image effect in Jasc's Animation Shop program. You can download a 30day trial (that lasts 60 days, IIRC) on their website. It also comes with the Paint Shop Pro program, if you buy that or download that trial.

what she did was post in icon communities to alert other icon makers to the existence of the stealer. it's customary. then other icon makers check out the journal in question, and in many cases discover a bunch of other people the thief has been stealing from. it's very rarely a one-off thing. she didn't go out to the rabble and give an incendiary speech, like.

'it's just an icon' wank from people who don't care about icons is much like 'how dare you f_wers LAUGH about such SERIOUS THINGS as my sterling reputation. IT'S NOT FUNNEH' wank from someone who is ideologically opposed to pointing and laughing.

Well, I think this wank (and the millions that preceded it and the millions that are yet to come) is based mostly on fandom-based icons. When someone's own personal picture or drawing is taken, that opens the door to an all new level of scary, and a lot more wank.

It's just that such is not the case here. :)

Ah, the eternal wank - "you stole my icon!" "So?"

I'm going to say the person who took the icon in question is wankier because, while bringing all your friends to share in the flaming is kinda wanky, the person who took the icon's replies made me want to smack her. Or maybe just send her to her room without dessert, because she seems immature enough that threats of "no cookie for you!" would work quite nicely. Ah, if I could buy the world grammar lessons, I swear.

Honestly, it wouldn't be that hard to say "okay, sorry, I'll give you credit" and end it, rather than slapping at each other like sugar-addled four year olds. But then, if everybody did the *sane* thing, we wouldn't be here, would we? *g*

I love it that they're getting this self-righteous over a boob icon.

I mean, if I made that icon, I'd keep quiet about it.

But, re: the wank, I guess I would get a little bit annoyed if someone stole the icons I spent time on. Like, my Chalet School icon took me ages, and it's sort of special to me because of my friends in the fandom it's for.

I agree that icon-stealing isn't a huge deal, but it'd be nice if people were at least polite about it. Unless it's an icon of a boob.

Well, I tend to make my own icons and icons for others. If I do make them for other people they almost never credit me, which I don't mind at all. I don't think I'd even be too upset of folks STOLE them since I tend to t00b around the internet looking for photos to fool around with (yeah, I'm very bad that way).

My brain just about exploded with trying to read all the netspeak. My brain does not like netspeak. See, this is my brain...this is my brain on netspeak (is now leaking out of ears).

I figure if someone "stole" one of my icons, I'd be pretty derned flattered but if it was original artwork I or a friend had done, I'd be pretty a little pissed about it.

I took this F_W icon from another thread though...does that count as stealing? I mean, the comment that went with it was something like "use it, use it often".

I took that as permission. :P

Here's my take on this, for what it's worth. In my opinion, both sides are being ridiculously wanky.

Speaking as person who toys around with icons as a hobby, I can definitely say that unless you are extremely familiar with a photo shop or paintshop type program...making the icon in question was not a five minute job. It takes me longer than that just to get the picture crop I want most of the time. Plus adding the blur animation? Depending on how it was done, again not just five minutes.

So, there was a time investiture by the creator.

I personally do not make a fuss about getting credited but then I don't usually make fancy dancy icons. I make simple ones for the most part. I respect the people who do make fancy dancy icons and I take the alleged five seconds to give credit.

The person using it should simply say, sure! I'll credit you, wow you did a great job.

On the other hand, it -is- only an icon. It isn't the creator's life work and I doubt their happiness truly hinges on whether or not they've been credited by so and so. Get over it already.

Just my usual two cents. o.0
