Look, Guys! It's Fish in a Barrel! ::: Aims Shotgun :::
We now turn to that king of crossover wankage, the Smallville fandom.

So. A couple of weeks ago, FOX debuted a new teen soap opera called The O.C.. Let me reiterate that. This show has only aired two episodes.

I, for one, thought it was a lot of fun with lots of likeable and/or intriguing characters, and started babbling about it on my LJ like I do about everything else. Apparently I was not alone in the SV fandom... Apparently a lot of other Smallville fen were really grooving on the show and posting about it simultaneously. Some of us made what we thought were some fairly innocuous comparisons between The O.C.'s female leads and those of Smallville. Some of us drew some, uh, not so innocuous comparisons.

Keep in mind, this fandom is only ten days old. (Thanks to [info]deeablo for the right airdates there.)

It didn't take long for Smallville fans to start wondering WTF was the big deal, but it didn't stop there. Oh, no. Suddenly it's a free for all, where everybody and their mamas gets their bitch on, though I think this one deserves an extra special prize.

Suddenly, everybody's all "You OC folks are, IMHO, totally overreacting" and also all "WTF is wrong with you people? IT'S SUMMER! There's nothing else on to watch!"

Personally, I think it's just a matter of some people meanly failing to take into account how very sensitive and precious some Smallville fans are (especially in the comments! Dayum!) (ETA: Dangit, someone deleted one of the posts. Didn't save that one, but I did save everybody else's!). Or (hee!) maybe not!

And the lesson of the day is, if you're sick to death of everybody talking about The New Black, maybe the best way to encourage that is NOT to... uh... rant about The New Black. Just a hunch, there.

ETA: I am eversoshocked at who chimed in! I love it.

I forgot to mention that I posted a request for wanky links regarding this kerfuffle on my LJ, for the sole purpose of entertaining you fine folks, and the posts I posted here were the result of eight people responding with links. Communal wank, people, it's a beautiful thing.

Hee!

BTW, I don't really like "The O.C." -- I just wanted to bitch-rag on Lana. Really.

It's sad the blackout took a lot of the oomph out of this wank. Just as it was heating up ...

Yeah, I only got into "The O.C." for the sole purpose of being able to bag on SV even more every week. Hee!

Although, as I was tellin a friend last night, I can understand the "conservative" side here. If I were a big Matisse fan and loved to talk about Matisse with other Matisse fans, and suddenly there's this gallery opening and suddenly all anyone can talk about is Picasso, Picasso, Picasso, and a couple of folks are all about how Picasso uses color better and is way more handy at that whole cubism thing than Matisse will EVER be, and blah blah blah... I'd soon be feeling all "You know what? Fuck Picasso AND the horse he rode in on." Ya know?

By the same token... when someone posts declaring "I am here to say I don't like this fandom", at my most generous, I think "That's... niiiiiiiice", and keep reading. At my least generous I think "!@!@(%^$#*&%*)(&#$STFUASSHATNOBODYFUCKINGCARES!!!!" So, there's that, too.

To be serious for a second (and then it's back to the pointing and laughing) I don't know why people get the idea that anything outside of a community on LJ is or should be devoted to any single topic. It's all about the person who owns the LJ, not about any particular fandom. Sure, people friend you for sharing various interests, but um, the power is yours to change that relationship at any time you feel you've diverged to the point of pain, ya know?

Eh, whatever. *points and laughs at self* Damn, I'm wanky!

Actually, Miss W, The O.C. premiered on August 5, which makes this fandom only ten days old. Although one of the links you listed actually is actually dated August 11, which means that after only one episode and less than a week, knickers were already in a twist.

Fastest kerfuffle ever?

Ah, Smallville. I can always count on your silly-ass flame wars to keep my evil bones warm. Mmmmmmm . . . evil bones . . .

Oh, I love when [info]misswindy brings wank from SV. And it's been so long without a SV wank, I was starting to worry.

I particularly liked this little OT exchange in the comments. Hee!

This was the bit that killed me:

Hmm, I never thought of it that way

What? WHAT? You just said you wanted to cuddle them and give them cookies and you never thought of it that way?

And a "woobie" is what all the kids in my family call their blankies. It just cracks me up to see the infantilization of all these men. *g*

Never thought of it that way, my ass. I hate the Woobie Brigade with the heat of a million suns. I, too, called blankets "woobies" (from Mr. Mom, yeah?) and now that word is forever ruined for me because certain people choose to infantilize grown men at every freaking opportunity.

Y'know, I never heard the word until some of my friends got into Smallville. I thought it sounded like... WAFFy, which was the utterly wrong track to take. It wasn't until said Smallville friend was watching the Due South pilot with me and went "Woobie!" at Fraser angsting over his father's death that I realized what it meant. o_O

I remember somebody realized the woobie thing had got out of hand when they were watching "Brimstone" and found themselves thinking "Aww, Satan's a woobie."

What about the infantilization of teenage boys who act like spoiled brats, rotten children and/or big whiny babies (see Everwood, re: Ephram Brown)?

I'm a big fan of the word "woobie", but I also enjoy perving on the minors.

Well, you can't really make infants out of... characters that are already little more than infants themselves. Most of the characters on Everwood bring out my maternal instinct. I don't actually want to seduce any of them*, so much as I want to bake them cookies and listen sympathetically.

* With the exception of Bright Abbott, who is not a woobie. ISNOTISNOTINFINITY.

And for the record, any character ever played by John Glover anywhere will nevah evah need a hug. EVAH! Good Lord, SV Fen and their sexual hangups. "I cannot deal with a grown man whose sexuality I find threatening and intimidating. MUST! MAKE! HIM! A! BABY!"

I hate, like, everything right now.

Meh.

Yeah, with Smallville I usually want to give everyone on the show a good stiff smack in the head, not bake them cookies.

This may be why I repeatedly kill them in fic.

I refuse to discuss Bright with you in this venue. It could get ugly. Woobie.

Sexuality? Frightening? NEVER.

Miss Windy gave me a code (thanks!) so I can come over here and wank myself!

I did delete my comment on the whole thing, but mainly because it was a waste of space. I basically just said "Hey, I was overly sensitive because when I started watching Smallville, my Roswell fandom friends basically refused to speak to me anymore, so when I saw The OC comments, I was expecting a repeat of that whole scenario."

So yeah--I was wanky. I should have realized that SV fandom can in no way get as wanky as Roswell fandom (I mean, posting the exec producer's home phone number on a message board and encouraging people to call and harass him because your fave couple isn't getting enough screentime? Now *that's* wanky!) and I was overreacting in my wankiness.

But hey--the whole thing caused more people to ask "What's The OC?" than the original posts, and that amuses me quite a bit.

So anyway, yeah I was somewhat wanky. I'll own it.

That's it. Embrace the wank. Integrate yourself into the community. Look forward to the wank of others. Soon, all sorrow shall pass and you shall become yet another industrious part of the hive vagina.

Hee! Thanks! I still stand by my side in the kerfluffle, it's just stepping away and getting some perspective made me agree I was being a bit wanky. And slodwick said everything I wanted to say and said it a lot better anyway.

Being able to laugh at your own wankiness makes enjoying the wank of others a lot more fun, I guess. So bring on the Harry Potter wank!

I advise against progressing immediately from a fuzzy bunnies and cute kittens wank like SV to the flaming bitchmonster with very sharp pointy teeth wank of HP.

Or at the very least, wait an hour after eating.

That's serious, hardcore wank. Are you sure you're ready for that?

You might want to try some on-line comics or pointy-stick wank first.

I recommend Keenspot webcomics for mid-level get-your-feet-wet learn-to-swallow type wank. All the bigger ones just generate wank daily, including personal vendettas and "YOU'RE WRONG BECAUSE I SAID SO" and exchanges of insults, but they're not HP-fandom level wank. *nods in a pseudowise sort of way*

I don't really consider SV to be a teen show...

Damnit! It IS a teen show! It's got *teenagers* in *high school*! Why do people have such a problem admitting that they like something not necessarily intended for their age group, whatever that may be? I still watch Power Rangers, and I'm not ashamed of the fact. I don't try and justify it with "Oh it's not a kids show, really." It has space aliens, giant robots, and people in spandex.

Blah!

I watch Courage the Cowardly Dog and The Powerpuff Girls, but it's not like they're kids' shows. And I like Tremors and Buffy but it's not like they're big dopey horror shows or something. And I read Mars and Peach Girl but they're not romance comics, goddammit! So shut up! LA LA LA LA LA CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!

Here's a couple of sites:

Fox's OC site

OC Central

The show airs Tuesday night at 9PM Eastern, and then Fox reairs that episode on Friday nights at 9PM and then again Monday nights at 8PM. So you can actually catch the second ep tonight if you're interested.
