I can't believe that bitch had the gall to say my grammar was bad! Why didn't any of you tell me my grammar was bad? You read the story, right?

Also: motivation SUCKS and BEAT ME UP AS A CHILD. I don't bloody well care why Squall walked down the damn hallway slowly!

Characterisation is the devil. We write fanfic so that we *can* write cardboard characters, don't we?

There's British grammar?

That's a common response by non-Americans who don't want to admit they're wrong... Someone with no grasp of syntax told me that the only people who criticised her "grammar" were Americans. I didn't bother pointing out that she was wrong, because if I had been American, it really wouldn't have fixed her sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-clauses.

Hell, I've seen a fellow Australian claim that she's allowed to spell Tolkien as "Tolkein" throughout because we Australians use British spellings. Uh... yeah.

As for the original post... I shouldn't find petulance so amusing. But it *is.* And it's nice that not everyone who repsonded gave her the reassurance for which she was so blatantly fishing.

There's British grammar?

Some of our usage is slightly different, and I've had that commented upon by beta-readers in the US who've never seen those phrases used quite that way.

Examples which spring to mind are "at the hospital" instead of "in the hospital", and "at the weekend" rather than "on the weekend". A friend whose first language was Gujerati and who'd lived in Britain for several years had both "at the hospital" and "at the weekend" marked wrong on a test by a US English teacher. They're not wrong, but they are non-US usage. But we don't have (that I'm aware of) very many examples like that, and I'm not sure they'd count as grammar.

Lexin, off to find her tinfoil hat, because this isn't very wanky.

I've been dealing with crap like that for years. You can't fuckin' win. This is the name kind of writer who will whine and complain that she's not getting reviews, and then whine and complain that they're not ego-strokes. *fume*

That wasn't a fucking flame, sweetie! Those're comments that are supposed to HELP you, for cripe's sake!

Been there. And people wonder why they get so "little" feedback, and why so little of that is in-depth and constructive. (And isn't that subject just like a cockroach: It can't even be beaten to death. Not for lack of trying, though.)

Wow, I had no idea that character depth and description were so utterly superfluous in fanfic. And a bona fide English teacher tells me so, no less! I have now learned the error of my ways, and to prove it, here is my new fic:

Frodo walked from the kitchen to the bedroom. Sam followed him. They almost shagged but didn't. Sam told Rosie to fuck off. Frodo and Sam shagged. The end.

P.S. Sam was very good at planting stuff.

And don't even try to give me constructive criticism, because that is MEAN.

I dunno, I think she's got a point - if she uses beta-readers or just shows her stuff to her friends and asks if it's good (or at least all right) she's durely got a real beef if they've said it is and it wasn't. That kind of criticism is better coming from a kind friend than a total stranger.

Worst of it is, if they're not good friends they're going to say, "Oh, poor you" and not "well, er, yeah, your grammar sucked rocks but we didn't want to mention it, but we will in future". I think I'd be pretty pissed with friends like that. I mean, it's kind-of akin to discovering that you'd come out of the toilet with your skirt caught up in your knickers and your 'friends' had decided to say nothing and wait to see how long it took the jocks by the bar to notice and laugh. In fact, I'd wonder if I needed friends like that.

"Description, yes. I have a problem with describing things. I hate describing things."

So...ummm...tell me...WHY is she writing?

But of course most of the characters are from 1 to 2 years old.

This is relevent how? Were the first 16 chapters verbatim from whatever fandom this is from? If so...HOW is this *fic*? Sounds more like rehashing what has already been written.

She calls that harsh criticism? Stinging her? Oh grow a backbone! That reviewer was trying to soften the blow, for goodness sake! I would never take such added measures to be so tactful.

Also: Now the grammar check was uncalled for because I do check my grammar. I'm very anal about my grammar. Now, the thing that bothers me is the fact that the story is a fanfiction.

Riiiight.

So she goes from saying how wrong the reviewer was to then lashing out at everyone who didn't tell her what was wrong with her story in the first place? I hate people like her. HATE!

Well, don't you know? Fanfiction shouldn't ever be criticized in any form--it's written for praising the wonderfulness of the author ONLY. Constructive criticism is BAD. :P

Pfeh.

I would kill people and walk over the dead bodies to get feedback with that kind of thought and detail put into it. If there's something wrong with what I wrote, then dammit, I want to know. I might be embarrassed, but I'd kind of like to do things right.

And personally, I tend to take it as a compliment that someone was paying that much attention to a "mere work of fanfiction."

Then again, on the other side of the spectrum, there's the fanfic writers who take themselves too damn seriously . . .

She reminds me so much of that silly girl who wrote an essay to get back at someone who critiqued her fic whining about how anything that wasn't: "OMG i LUVED UR FIC?!!111" shouldn't be given.

"One day I learnt to FLY!". *snerks*

And am I the only one who's slightly disturbed at the placing of the word "anal" there?
