I come bearing RPS wank.
So a bunch of people in the Buffy/Angel fandom started a community dedicated to RP slashing pretty much all of the actors on both shows. And they have a lot of fun.

Bubonicplague has a problem with this. In fact, she finds the RPG "offensive, twisted, and sick." She asks all involved to de-friend her. (Since it’s also mentioned in some of the comments, I should add that Bubonicplague also thinks slash trivializes gay men.)

Kita weighs in with an early response, and some of the comments in her thread turn into a discussion of the etiquette involved in kerfuffles when neither person has the other on their friends list.

TheBratQueen also adds her two cents, mentioning that this whole thing might be easier to follow if it were on fandom_wank.

Meanwhile, in the comments of Bubonicplague’s original thread, someone mentions that "we ought to start a RP RPG where we take on the identities of people who do these things. Complete with RPG'd lawyers sending cease-and-desists, and RPG'd pissed-off SOs, etc etc." The RPSers decide that, actually, that sound like a great idea. Seriously.

Now, with all this said, I only have one question: is there really a "No Keruffle Day"?

It's the Handbasket Fandom Wank!

There's nothing in it yet, but still. It's there.

Oh Gods, me too. The one that's keeping me from just throwing caution to the wind is that I don't know any of the people involved.

Now if you'd started it ... I'd be a complete goner.

Yup. I can't find the original post, but someone thought there should be a no kerfluffle day. Which nifty idea. But of course being fandom that WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. :)

The original posts by Tiashome would be HERE and HERE. Tiashome's been working really hard on this campaign, so I'm hoping we can pull it off. :)

There would be a massive fight over which day in particular should be chosen. After one is picked, there will be splinter groups that:
(a) declare a different day as No Kerfuffle Day;
(b) declare that No Kerfuffle Day is pointless, fascist, anti-fandom, and/or discriminatory;
(c) start their own Every Day is Kerfuffle Day campaign; or
(d) declare the same day to be All-Fandom Kerfuffle Day.

Leave it to the Buffy fandom to completely obliterate a no-kerfluffle armistice. *sigh* I'm so proud of my fandom!

This is the best thing I've seen in ages. Kind of reminds me of when Undone accused an bunch of people of destroying the LotR fandom, including Hollyweirdos, that slashy little LotRiPS parody we all know and love. Eval fandom-destroying RPS wank, a time-tested classic! *g*

Dude. I was counting the seconds until this got Fandom_Wanked. COUNTING.THE.SECONDS.

Being a part of the original wankage on this one, I can't really chime in too much. But I wanted to pimp this:

Now, with all this said, I only have one question: is there really a "No Keruffle Day"?

YES!!! There totally is, and it's designated to be tomorrow. (August 20th, James Marsters birthday. He's the one who plays Spike.) The idea was started by the lovely Tiashome, and you can find The Original Post Here all about No!Kerfluffle!Day.

Whee!

Whew! About time y'all spotted that. I was getting ready to post it myself.

You know for me the beauty of this wank is that it's a baby wank. I mean how often do we get to observe the start of any wank, let alone the beauty that slash and real people fic can create, in the wild?

I'm almost tempted to just sit and watch it quietly. Observe it in its natural habitat as it were. But then I think it would get eaten by a Harry Potter debate and never survive. Sad really.

Oh hell, there've been embryonic wanks posted here, where the wanking hadn't even started yet, but people knew it would. This is at least a toddler by now. ;-)

Well I liked the early part where Bubonicplague USED to like slash but then it became 'popular' and God knows we CAN'T have that happening to something you like.

[Despite no real evidence of any upswing in slash.]

Hrmm,

I don't remember that myself, I seem to remember Bubonic being one of the ones on the Dreamworks Gladiator BB that I used to go 'round and 'round with about Slash (Since I was writing Gladiator slash at the time). Too bad all those old threads from 2000 got hacked into non-existence or I'd backtrack and look for them to be certain.

Wait so, Bubonicplague liked slash until it became popular, and then she didn't get to be nifty and cutting edge so she didn't like anymore. And that somehow trivializes homosexuality less than it being trendy? ::head explodes::

God just go fucking shop at Hot Topic and then claim to be anti-establishment and be done with it.

Yes, avoiding the trend is now trendy.

That being the case, we should also avoid trying to preserve the canon of Pirates of the Carribean, since the greatest, most deep and meaningful cause of all is making sure you relive the golden age of old-skool for a fandom that's a month and a half old. *nods very sagely*

And this is why I have this beautiful icon. It says it all.

RPSers say 'hmm, I think it's hawt to imagine that this guy could be attracted to this other guy' and that's bad, but anti-RPSers can say 'OMG that is so offensive and the actors will be mortified!!1' and that's fine? Who's role-playing worse there? And who actually thinks that they, like, KNOW how James Marsters really feels?

For Pete's sake. You don't like it, don't look, and leave the cease and desist letters to the Real People. (If AJ McLean sends me a C&D, I will frame it and never write him again. Unless he asks me to please stop writing about those silly Nsync boys and write more Backstreet slash, in which case I could be bribed with merchandise and trivia. Naked pictures. I'm not easy, but I am cheap!)

this must be bubonicplague's new crusade because I just saw her sticking her foot in her mouth somewhere else where they were discussing trends. anyone who thinks slash/RPS and RPS RPGs are trendy is a little behind in the game. maybe they were trends once, but now they are just commonplace.

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]mpoetess
2003-08-21 08:15 pm UTC (link)
FWIW, the trends discussion was actually Kerfuffle Patient Zero -- bubonicplague left her first comment there. People jumped on it in the original 'What are the hot new trends' poster's lj, so bubonicplague went off and made her own post. Possibly to spare the original poster's inbox.

Also FWIW, I think most of the pearl-clutching is because RPS in the Buffy fandom has been pretty much underground until now, and the new slash 'trend' is for Buffy het writers to start dabbling in slash. So I'm seeing a lot of comments from people who have spent almost their entire fandom existence in Jossverse, or one small segment of it, and are now being brusquely woken up to stuff that's existed in Fandom At Large for quite a while, but which they could previously ignore because their friends/beloved writers weren't doing it. Or weren't doing it loudly.
