yes, even wrestling fans hate rape.
So I frequent this one wrestling message board. It's a decent board, I enjoy it for the most part. There are people who aren't so cool, but things are kept mostly under control.

That is, until the WWE decided to show a segment on this week's episode of RAW that vaguely implied rape. I mean, really, vaguely. It was definitely the impression they were going for with the scene, but they didn't show it. At all.

I logged on to the message board today, fully expecting the usual "That segment was lame because it didn't involve any wrestlers or wrestling", which is a valid complaint.

But I forgot about this one chick on the board who is one of the prime reasons I hate most chick wrestling fans.

See her start a thread entitled "RAW From A Rape Victim's Perspective" and regale us all with the tale of her own rape.

See her pimp her agonizingly personal thread in a completely DIFFERENT thread, and make a heartwrending comment about Randy Orton's nipples in the process.

Now, granted, the responses are fairly sane, for the most part, because it's a good message board, but did there need to be a thread in the first place? Titling it her own experience and then giving details to complete strangers over the internet?

On top of all that, her post didn't even make a whole lot of sense. She says she's okay with *some* depictions of rape on tv, but this stupid, poorly acted, completely ridiculous segment bothered her so much? To the point of not enjoying Randy Orton's nipples?

And you know, I thought the segment was kinda hot. *g*

Bleh. As a rape victim i can't imagine relaying a detailed story about it to a bunch of strangers...on a wrestling board of all places. Strangely enough, rape scenes or implied rape has never bothered me in movies/tv/whatever...because i know it's fake, i guess.

Oh, and Randy Orton wouldn't happen to be related to Cowboy Bob Orton from the 80's, would he? *is old school wrestling fan*.

Indeed he is. Randy's the third generation Orton to be in the business, IIRC.

Yes. But Mr. Rock shall now go on to star in a film with Christopher Walken, so all is forgiven.

I'm beginning to think that there are only about five of us in the entire wrestling fandom who either thought that this segment wasn't a big deal, or actually liked it.

The implication that I got wasn't that Eric was going to rape Linda, it was that he was going to attempt to seduce her. A rather unwelcome attempt at seduction, maybe, but not on the scale of rape. Then again, maybe I'm the only one who thinks there's a difference.

Besides, all Shane had to do was call the Greenwich police and get them there. You can do that even from Michigan. Even if you're Pissed Off Pottymouth!Shane.

I didn't think this was half as creepy as the revelation a couple of months ago that Vince had whored Stephanie out to close business deals. Of course, that may be because we'd been writing fic like that, only with Shane in the whore role, for years.

And lastly, I'm always head-shakingly amused by how even longtime WWE fans, who ought to know by now that Vince will do anything for ratings, can be shocked and outraged by the stuff he puts on TV. C'mon people, this is VINCE we're talking about.

You know, someone pointed this out in the thread, actually, that if we're to believe Bischoff is aware of the camera, and you'd think he would be, then he was *definitely* not planning on raping Linda. Because all of America was watching, and that would be like saying "Hey! Arrest me!"

From a storyline standpoint, the most logical answer would be that he was only trying to further piss off Shane, and if so, mission accomplished. And I must thank him, because pissed off Shane is a very very good thing for my general fangirlishness.

If people are going to whine about this segment, whine about the fact that Linda didn't automatically say "Um.. you're fired!". Whine about the fact that Linda can't act. There are *plenty* of things to whine about here. Plenty.

And yeah, Sorcha, you're right. This didn't hold a candle to Vince pimping out Stephanie, or - lest we forget - Katie Vick.

Shane is back? Damn it, I'm going to have to start watching wrestling again. It seems that, over the past couple of years, my interest in the WWF has depended completely on whether Shane is around or not. Mmmm. Shane.

Say it isn't so. That's just not fair. The last time I turned in briefly to check out the WWF, I was forced to watch the whole episode with Piper pulling off some fan's wooden leg. And while the whole scene had both my father and I in tears and proclaiming it the most entertaining thing we had *ever* seen, it just reinforced my general dislike for wrestling these days.

But, Shane. In jeans.

I hate you.

*G* That was actually Zack Gowen, who's a damn good wrestler they signed from the indies. Two words: one-legged moonsault.

And if you go to shane-o-mac.org, Shinobi usually has screen caps up from Raw.

Okay, so, I wasn't real wild about the segment myself, but that's just me. My gripe was that it ran too long.

But rape and Orton's nipples in the same post? Yep, sounds like WWE fans. The only way this gets better is if you get rape, Orton's nipples, and a HHH conspiracy theory all thrown together. For example:

HHH wanted to show Orton having his nipples pierced while being raped, in order to keep the young superstar down.

Sorry if that was incoherent.

You watch something like Law and Order you know pretty much what your getting. When you watch RAW however you dont expect to be exposed to that crap. You expect to see wrestling.

Umm... has she ever seen RAW before this?

I dunno, I don't watch myself, but I have friends who are avid (though growing less and less avid) fans of WWE. I used to watch an episode here and there, back when it was the WWF, and was always heartily unimpressed.
It seemed, to me, that the professional wrestling shown on TV, during the Hulk Hogan glory days, generally portrayed a very positive message. I mean sure, it was violent, and corny, and all that stuff, but you had Hogan telling kids "Stay in school!", and stuff like that.
WWE wrestlers are mocked for displaying good manners (the announcers once ranted for around five minutes about what a loser Mankind was because he asked a non-wrestler to "Move, please". "PLEASE?! PLEASE?!? He said PLEASE?! What a LOSER!" Yeah, I just love that they're beaming that message right into the brains of all the ten-year-olds out there clutching Steve Austin stuffed toys.)
I mean, y'know... I don't buy into all that crap about violent TV making kids killers, far from it. But I KNOW that your values, outlook, and manners can be influenced by such things, and when blatantly poor outlooks and values are portrayed to kids as positive things, then it makes me... uncomfortable, at the least.
(It also pisses me off that any other station were to put anything that was even halfway as objectionable as WWE on, they'd have to put it on after midnight, while WWE gets away with sticking it right there at 7pm on the dot, with nary a scratch to show for it. How come they get treated so special?)
