Cosplay wank. Oh my.
I've lurked around here for quite some time, but only started commenting the other day, when I finally got a journalfen account. *whee*

I moderate the Cosplay Community over on Livejournal. Normally, I force PC-ness down everyone's throats in an attempt to keep the community from degenerating into one big pit of flames (which un-moderated cosplay boards tend to do). Today, I don't care. Maybe it's because I've been hanging around Mary Sue places for too long, and have come to see flame wars as a scource of entertainment, maybe I'm bitter because I got out of the cosplay scene some time ago and am sick of the whole darn thing - who knows. But there's a terribly stupid thread going on right now over what makes a REAL cosplayer. As cosplay_admin, I'm making few and far between attmepts to get everyone to shut up. I'm waiting for someone to notice that my ISP matches one of the bitchy posters, and discover that I'm not the happy PC mod I make myself out to be.

But really, politics in the ranks of people who dress up like imaginary characters makes no sense to me. Sheesh.

What makes a TRUE fan?

This arguement comes up in one form or another on every single fannish message board I've ever been on. It's stupid and ugly and annoying. THERE IS NOTHING THAT MAKES ONE A 'TRUE' OR 'REAL' ANYTHING. You like/do something enought to discuss it online? You are a Real Whatever. The End.

Arrgh. Sorry. I like, you, would usually kill a thread like this if it showed up on my board. But wank is fun!

Bad, naughty fandom_wank. You're ruining us mods. You need a spanking!

Only the owner of the community (or journal) and the person who made the comment are able to see the logged IP, just FYI.

Man, this is funny. Who cares? It's not like being a cosplayer will get you into Harvard.

Someone said "It's not like we're curing cancer", and a couple people took offense because she was trivializing their beloved hobby. *eyeroll*

Someone should clue them in that it is trivial.

And the first poster turned it around to "we should be curing cancer instead" The best part is when she calls herself silly, then says that the problem comes from all the silly people...

I love cosplaying! I love it even more now that it has an exceedingly silly person ranting about who should be labeled a "cosplayer". My friend is far more serious about it than this person seems to be and she found the entire thing highly amusing. Being elitist doesn't make you the elite.

{Or have kids try to tell me something about an episode of Kenshin they watched on cartoon network, when I watched Kenshin on 4th generation Hecto fansubs copies back in the year of the flood.}

Wordy Mcword. I do remember those Hecto fansubs... Ahhh trying to figure out what the hell was going on because the picture was so bad...

I digress.

{I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. I'm simply one who has a compulsion to set things straight, and do not back down.}

Yes and when we're not in BizzaroLand that's called 'arguing for the sake of arguing' as well as 'backpeddeling so fast you'll run into something.'

/I've/ got the Hecto fansubs, too, and damn, was I proud of them at the time... I think mine were fifth or sixth generation, though.

Fifth or sixth gen? Were they even watchable? I only have a few fansubs (of Yu Yu Hakusho)...and I think mine are all first or second gen. Imagining the breakdown you'd get after that many copies makes me shudder.

And then it turns into an IF YOU WATCH ONLY CARTOON NETWORK STUFF UR NOT A TROO ANIME FAN!!!!1111 wank in one of the threads.

Ah, my beloved anime fandom, you wank about the same things over and over and over again. Can we not have some variation in our wank, like the HP fandom?

... hmm, on second thought... nah.

(And to the original poster: Props on the normal operation of the community, by the way. I got some very much needed aid from it back when I was making my costume for Fanime and AX hall/masquerade this year.)

I've sharpened this particular knife so often that it's worn down to a sliver. It can't take any more.

I love making costumes and I love wearing them, but goddamn if I don't hate the community at large with the fire of a thousand suns. (Not yours, I mean the "scene" overall.) Like anything it's 90% crud, but in this case... I'm sorry, but this hobby is built around calling attention to yourself. You are GOING to get a bunch of freaking drama queens. Combine that with the anime fandom's penchant for trivial shibboleths (well, Iiiiiiiii saw the series before it was even maaaaaaade so there, you poser!!!!) and you have one gi-freaking-gantic wank souffle.

Thank god some of - many of - the people in that thread actually have their heads screwed on straight. It's a hobby. It's an immensely silly hobby dedicated to doing immensely silly things. It is also fun as hell, but let's be honest, it's silly. This does not preclude its being fun.

People need to stop basing their damn self-esteem on their hobbies. That's all. I'm done. < /statingtheobvious >

Why is [info]ureshiialucard going eliteest whilst chanting 'Hellsing! Pokemon! Digimon 02!!'?

But seriously. Going "uh, you're debating this and need to get a life!" when you are the other side of the debate? Participating in the row with two different aliases, that apparently no one else there know are the same person? I guess we all need things to do in our free time.

Most of the regulars know that cosplay_admin = phantasmrose (it's not like I have conversations with myself, or deny my identity if people ask).

The "get a life" thing was definately a low point. That kid, tho, drives me up a wall. He asked for opinions on his Hellsing/Chobits crossover doujinshi, and I said I didn't like it. He's seen me as a LJ arch-nemesis ever since, and will start an argument over any damn thing if I'm around. I usually ignore him.. *shrug*

Cosplay can be really fun - it's just best to stay away from all online functions. >_< The cosplay LJ was up before the "cosplay boom" hit the internet.. and now it's just... yeesh.

That does seem more reasonable, I got quite a different impression from your original post.

I know individual cosplayers, and they seem to have fun enough, it's just that when cosplayers get in groups I see them turn into spectacular backbiting orgies. Is there any one thing you can do without getting your own group of hecklers somewhere?

Hellsing/Chobits crossover, I will refrain from commenting on.
