Real-life wank is a FANTASTIC substitute for online fandom, let me tell you.

Now, the "customers_suck" community over on LiveJournal is pretty inherently wanky: people go there to rant and rave about how much working retail blows, and, more specifically, commisserate with one another about their worst customers. There's a lot of bitching that occurs, some people are less tolerant and worthy of sympathy than others, yadda yadda, but one thing brings them all together, and that's a common bond for hating that disturbingly large aspect of the human race that goes shopping.

(Say it with me, now: "awwwww".)

Cue the wankage. The post starts out fairly complimentary, with the person calmly explaining that (s)he's a thirty-year-old minister (of what, nobody's really sure; he uses "shalom" at the end of his post, ...then talks about attending seven years of "bible College") who's spent half of his life working various retail jobs. The post then digresses into a (rather fittingly, I suppose) preachy vacillation about how customer service slobs are actually "servents" (most of the annoyed C_S-ers jumped on the "let's make fun of his spelling!" bandwagon right away) and how, after more than thirteen years of being "shit on, beaten on, insulted and used", he "cant remember a single one". Behold:

"I am a servent. I accepted that post a long time ago. And it is because I did not complain at cleaning up shit, taking odd shifts, complain about customers who were rude or short sighted, cleaning up vomit, helping old ladies fix thier bra's, or change in open places... because I always worked as hard as i could, and gave eerybody I met my full attention, wether they deserved it or not. Worked alone every night for weeks on end in the Worlds largest holder of strange people, cut hair for people who smelt bad, and learned everything I could from every single person... I accepted marriage propasals from drunk men I did not know, when I could find that elusive Christmas present, under ten dollers, that thier mother just had to have, I tended to those who had been robbed, and were sure it was my fault, and I have talked with little old ladies on the phone for an hour, who couldnt get my name right, and were sure that they left thier earings in our store, when really, they hadnt bought any in the first place. I have been slapped, hit on, stalked, and insulted.

Yet, I cannot remember detials, nor do I find that any of it stays with me really at all. I learn what I can, and move on."

Yeah, we get it, Mr. Holier-Than-Thou; you're better than us, and I'm willing to bet your dick is bigger, too. May God Allah be with you.

Oh, and the REAL stinger? Here's the icon Preacher Man (or The Creator's Childe, as he calls himself) uses in his tidings of good will and even better customer service:

Yes, I work in retail. By choice. Because, guess what, I make pretty good money, have excellent benefits, and I only have to work 35 hrs. a week. If you envision yourself as some sort of tortured soul/servant/martyr, that's exactly what you're going to get treated like.

The reality in our store? Probably 85% of the customers are very cool or at least nothing more than ordinary. Another 10% or so are at most irritating or tiresome. And the remaining 5% or less are the ones who are flatout batshit evil--and you tend to see 'em coming and learn how to deal with them. The oddballs and doofuses we just vent on and make fun of when we go back for stock--it's the Shoe Stockroom version of F_W!

You said it exactly! LOL. Now, I love Customer's Suck, cause there are some pretty hilarious tales there--and I'm, if nothing else, a sucker for the sordid tale of the Weird Customer, but honestly, the majority of customers are cool. Except on full moons. I work retail in a rich district where you get your soccer moms and your richies who believe that Yes, You Are Their Personal Servant, So Can You Please Carry These Two Items to the Front for Them?, but you also get your guys who work hard and get a lot of money, yet are very cool about doing business with you. They occasionally tip expansively too.

As for the other side of the customer rainbow, most of the oddjobs you don't ever see again. Thank whatever deity--or lack of deity--for that. For the ones that are regulars--or the ones that seem to somehow clone themselves--you learn to just grin and bear it... and then later go to the break room or the stock room or the frame shop and bitch and laugh.

Sometimes though... sometimes... the murderous intent just grows too strong, even for the most able-bodied employee... But I found that even the most crude asshole has a hard time being rude to the face of a smiling, chipper person. You know, the whole 'bouncing off the shield of obliviousness' thing and all.

Well I always thought rant communites were about, ya know, ranting.

Because you can't tell the jackass with the cellphone where to shove his new computer/tennis racket/Volvo/whatever if you want to keep your job and not get sued, and sometimes you just want to know you're not the only person this happens to.

Well, I work part time for Starbucks, and I've worked various other retail full time for quite awhile. *Not* by choice, unless you mean I'm choosing this over being a janitor or whatever. Retail sucks. And, customers suck... being a customer myself? I still stand by that remark. People turn into idiots when they go shopping.

But dude, I bitch at work, or for awhile after I get home... not 24/7 on the internet when I could be reading porn & relaxing. Let go of the pain, and leave your angst for the customers.

A much better place to share the misery is Stained Apron.com and CustomersSuck.com, which is 50 billion times better than that crap forum on LJ.

I've worked in food service too, and interestingly enough, I felt there's a big difference between that and retail. I did -not- like working food service at all, and I can heartily sympathize with you there. You seem to get more customers whose attitude is that you are their servant, and they know how little fs workers get paid, and that you're dependent on their tips. (And because I've been there myself, I tip really well for good service.)
In retail, OTOH, I'm selling something the customer really wants, and I work on commission, so it benefits both of us for them to be a good customer, and for me to be a good sales associate--the dynamic is a little more equal, so to speak. Of course, the fact that I work for a fairly upscale department store probably doesn't hurt either. But the fact is, I've been working there for over 13 years, and I've not come across any other job that pays as well that I would want to do. I've had some 9-5 jobs, and the routine always made me feel so trapped that I ended up quitting them after a short time.
YMMV, o'course. ;-D

Bleargh. Assuming that what you see on one comm/post/entry totals the entirety of a person's attitude and experience, instead of a bunch of momentary fits of irritation/temper/bitchiness, is such a common annoyance that it's gone past irritating me and right on into "my eyes glaze over every time I see it."

But the icon fit to that post is just O_o.

You and him, both. :D

I'm pretty sure he's trying to flimsily justify ranting at people who gather to rant about work, by sugar-coating the second half of his post with "I love customers_suck"-isms.

Sneaky pirate, that one.

Two things

1) Customers_suck members do not hate -every- customer that exists. As a long time reader of the group I've seen many postings praising certain customers.

2) The preacher person couldn't be a more obvious troll if they put out twenty billboards exclaiming the details of themselves being a troll.

Wow, another community i'm a member of getting wanked on, this just hasn't been a good few days for me!

I read the community for the occasional funny stories. Some of the people who post are really bitter and some are downright rude. Like calling customers numerous cursewords for not replying to their greeting or somesuch. Like the ones who purposely make a customer's life hell because they're having a bad day. I don't support posters like that, and i don't endorse what they do.

I agree with the 'troll' to a certain extent. While i'm not saying it's right, when you're in a 'service' position you have to expect that you're not going to be treated as an equal. It however doesn't mean you deserve to be sexually harassed, screamed at, or abused.

But dude...if a person is ranting and screaming in the comm because someone didn't say 'hi' to them, i'm gonna roll my eyes and think they really need to chill if something that small induces fits of hysteria.

Like I said, there's a definite level of wank inherent to the community from the get-go; customer service can be kind of sucky, in and of itself, but some of the people who work in it really ask for trouble.

From looking at this person's userinfo, they're a Messianic Jew, which is either a Jew who's decided that Jesus is the Messiah, but still wants to live a Jewish life, or is, basically, a Southern Baptist in a Yalmulke.

Ah-ah, according to her, the "shit jobs" are just part of her civic duty. The fact that the ambiguously gay Captain Jack icon leers from its perch in the upper left hand corner of the post either screams "troll" or, as somebody else in this thread put it, "one of THOSE ministers".

Meeeeeeh.

I enjoy customers_suck, but it's getting harder to sift through the incoherent OMGWTFkiddie posts these days.

And I get the feeling, reading between the lines of many posts, that a lot of the people who post there aren't really cut out for retail/service jobs anyway. I frequently end up wondering what their attitude was like, or if they even made an effort to help a customer out in the first place.

But it's worth the effort of sifting, 'cause there are some real gems on that community.

Anybody remember the wank a few weeks back about fatty foods and dieting?

The 'complain about your jobs' communities are pretty infested with people who can't spell worth a fucking damn.

But customers_suck is worth it for the funny stories and helping out people. Like that one poor lady who gets stuck behind a phoneless counter a lot when crazies rant at her. I suggested checking around for a cellphone that, despite having no plans, can still dial 911.
