Ahh, anime wank.

ADV announces that their release of Sailor Moon R will have a missing episode.

Watch a few people respond intelligently. Watch others respond with fannish bloodbaths against those involved. And, of course, watch the wank.

I don't particularly care, as Sailor Moon was never part of my intro to anime (I've never seen it, actually) but there are some good wanky bits and some SERIOUS potential for major, major wank a-brewin.

My favorite example of The Stupid so far: someone who suggests that ADV license just the missing episode and release it alone on its own DVD.

SWOOSH.

Hear that? That was the point, missing you! Unfortunately. If it had hit, well, the world would be a better place. (Bloodier, but better.)

I had two mental reactions apon reading that ADV was cutting an episode:

- That's really strange, as ADV is known for it's "body count minimum", and prides itself on having uncut action shows. It's suprising they would cut something out of a series like Sailor Moon.

- Is the episode one that the Japanese company has allowed them to have? If it was cut from the dubbed, then it's possible ADV can't get it - they could have bought the series from the people who originally dubbed it.

About the wank: Moonies are an ancient, most terrifying breed of fan. I fear their re-appearence.

I wonder if the licensor really just wanted to keep this one locked away where no one can ever see it ever again? From what I've heard, the "Chibi Usa rescues a dinosaur" episode was one of the worst in the show, which must really be saying something. I wonder if maybe Toei was embarrassed by how bad it was and wanted to erase its existence from recorded history :D.

I'm glad I was overly drunk when I watched it. Apparently my commentary made it more bearable for the sober attendees of our soiree. Given that I only remember getting really upset that it was in Japanese since I didn't want to read subtitles at 2 AM, I don't see how that's possible. Good times...

I think ADV should have just kept their mouths shut about it, then denied all knowledge of THE LOST EPISODE when confronted by enraged fanboys forever onward.

And then Naoko Takeguchi will turn into MECHA-TAKEGUCHI and stomp on all the warehouses containing Sailor Moon merchandise, and laugh and laugh and laugh over how she has stolen the smiles of all of the ~~children~~ otaku.

If it's a good translation, normally it doesn't. But good translations don't happen that often in the anime world.

I watched and read the whole thing in Japanese and we haven't really ever had a good English translation. DiC anally raped SM's canon with a KitchenAid mixer. They didn't just translate it into English, they cut episodes, renamed characters, even gave one bishounen character a very poorly done sex change in order to hide the fact that there is canonical slash in SM. They did very odd things to the Shinto priestess character in order to not offend the fundies. I don't understand this at all because the whole series is based in astrology and Western witchcraft; at the very end of the comic, the universe is restored because Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity do the Wiccan Great Rite, even though they don't call it that. (Which I suspect is why they gave up on translating it to American TV.) I also think they made the lesbian lovers cousins. (Oh, there's the biggest canon SM wank of all. Takeuchi, one of the creators, allegedly sometimeslikes to say that their relationship is platonic, but Ikuhara swears it isn't, goes around telling everyone how he played up the fact that Uranus is a very aggressive butch dyke, basically. Ordinarily I would go with Takeuchi since she's the main writer, but since nearly everything else she's written without the committee she had working on Sailor Moon with her is so bad compared to Sailor Moon...I dunno what to think.) Shinto, however, isn't Wicca, it's a religion that's existed for thousands of years and is hardly controversial!

TokyoPop/MixxZine accurately translated the comics...as long as you don't mind that they translated them into late 90's hiphop slang and not the English equivalent of the standard Tokyo Japanese that they were written in. I could have understood that decision if the things had been written in say, Osaka-ben. (Later issues may be better. I have to confess I only bought a couple of the wretched things.)

ADV's translation is probably not horrible like DiC's, but if pieces are missing, it's not complete.

I can understand why Toei might not want to release some of the less coherent eps of the R arc (there was lots of stuff added in that arc that didn't come from the manga, unlike the other arcs, and the need to have a Big Battle every week in a weekly show that was based on a monthly comic which *didn't* have a fight in every episode led to some massive stupidity in the show from time to time), but what this means is, if you want the complete show and you are among the Japanese-challenged, you can't get it unless you can find someone who is still willing to share a fansub, despite the fact that the licensing of SM-R to ADV has made this illegal. So I don't blame them for being mad. Not everyone wants to take the time to learn enough Japanese to watch anime without subtitles.
