Cross-wank!
I proudly present a wank that includes two topics close to my heart: Duran Duran and Nsync.

This is the message board for the official Duran Duran website. Tends to get mildly wanky - a favorite topic right now, for instance, is the age-old true fans vs. the fair weather fans who attended recent concerts only once the original line-up reunited.

But last night's Video Music Awards show has produced one of the funnier wanks in a long time. For those who didn't see it, Duran were suprised with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Unfortunately, the audio for the video tribute to Duran didn't work, and the awards were hurriedly and awkwardly rushed out. Nick, the keyboardist, quipped "I think we've been punk'd."

Add to it the facts that Kelly Osbourne and Avril Lavigne - both half Duran's age - were chosen to present Duran's award; that the Lifetime Achievement presentation was cut short because Duran were presenting the award for Best Dance Video, which went to Justin Timberlake; and last that Justin was included in a post-awards interview with Duran, and you have all the elements for wank aplenty. Durannies are simultaneously pleased and pissed:

Edit: Adding links as new wanktastic threads develop:

A friend's very funny two cents.

With no other recourse in sight, the fans turn on Justin. And keep going.

"Do you think Warren should have gotten a Moon Man too?" "Do you have to start this now?! Let a day go by without some drama!"

Older threads:

Duran were robbed.
A slap in the face.
LA station up in arms
DD get love at the MTV board.

How about we all be happy for them?

Duran are not appropriate for MTV anymore.

"Comments like this is the reason why I think we are in a losing battle to educate the younger music generation."

And
post awards coverage wank, including, I'll freely admit, a bit of my own. :->

As I mentioned, only mildly wanky, especially compared to the wank brewing within Nsync circles (e.g. "Justin didn't even thank Nsync in his speeches!") But then again, this one's just started, bless their little Durannie hearts.

Edit:I can't believe how many lurkers there are today. Fess up! It's all f_w'ers, isn't it?

I remember Duran Duran.

I also remember Culture Club, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears (I was a major TFF junkie once - still am, but in tamer form) and a lot of other '80's bands too. (Where are they now? I ask meself.)

But some days, it's hard to admit to being an '80's child when you've got people like this. Seems that anything that has nostalgia value, you get those who long for the "golden days" of the fandom (think they'll wet themselves with excitement if all the great '80's styles come back?)

Anyways, do you know of any other sources of '80's nostalgia!wank? I need a been there, watched the show, bought the toy-based laugh every now and then. (I think that was a challenge to myself, that...)

:: snort :: Just hang out on any Police-related mailing list or web board. We get fresh wank almost daily. The "golden days" of that fandom were a wankfest and the old wars still rock on. Sad but true.

Loved the Duran wank, BTW. The bitching about Avril and Kelly was almost the same as we got when they chose Gwen Stefani to do the Hall of Fame honors for The Police.

Why, thank you. *curtsies* Interestingly enough, Durannies would have been mollified if Gwen Stefani had presented the award to Duran since she's mentioned being a fan before and No Doubt went to the VIP reunion concert in LA a few weeks ago.

One would have thought the same thing with the Police fans, since Gwen has repeatedly gone on about how big of a Police fan she is, but nooooo... they all wanted someone of truly legendary stature to introduce the band and bitched for weeks about how awful her induction speech was.

Pity the worst of the wank has timed out on one of the message boards, I'll have to doublecheck if it overflowed onto the mailing list... of course that also turned into a fresh Sting vs. Stewart wankfest over how much of a bastard Sting is for not wanting to do a reunion tour, and how Stewart purposefully broke his snare during the performance for the attention (and/or as a sure sign that he has no control as a drummer), how much Andy sucked or rocked, and finally death threats were issues at VH1 for cutting one of the songs from the TV broadcast...

....ah, good times were had by all.

We could have 80s wank week.

how much of a bastard Sting is for not wanting to do a reunion tour, and how Stewart purposefully broke his snare during the performance for the attention

I'm glad the animosity between band members never quite reached Police level because I like my Durannie wank to stay relatively tame (although... who knows if there'd been message boards around when Andy was suing the band for the name...). Nonetheless, some of the threads about how Warren was unceremoniously dumped to make room for the reunion were threatening to reach historic levels of wank.

There were a few media mentions about it, but most notably Duran did a (very bitchy) documentary about the '87 tour called Three to Get Ready and they referenced the lawsuit there.

I'm not sure if I'm misinterpreting your post, but I should have probably added for context that these aren't fans on a nostalgic kick. Duran - for better or worse - continuously have been releasing albums with various lineups. So most of the fans on the board are people who have followed the band through all its incarnations. In other words, the wank has been building up for over 20 years. ;->

Anyways, do you know of any other sources of '80's nostalgia!wank?

I don't follow any (but if there were a public Tears for Fears board, believe me, I'd be linking to wank there, because they're even worse than Durannies) but my guess is that if any of these sites has a message board, there's wank to be had. ;->

A TFF board? Oh, I'd be so there. And I'd probably be just as bad as the Durannies we're mocking, because I was like super obsessed with them just before they split up ('round 90-91 somewhat).

I didn't get into TFF until "Elemental" was released in '93, amazingly enough. And I can tell you that a good number of the fans are batshit insane.

I like "Elemental", but I kinda like Roland's solo project just a tad more, IMHO.

I'd better stop now; else I may end up luring the worst of the TFF fandom into coming here.

I wouldn't be too surprised if I live to regret my desire to fish for wank at a TFF board if they're that insane. O.O

Except these claims are coming from women in their 40s. I can't tell you how many marriages broke up in a short period because of something TFF-related.

*looks up at comment about being obsessive TFF fan in childhood but has since tamed-down considerably*

To think the worst of my obessions (I was 14 in 1989-90) included:

1: insisting upon seeing them in concert not once but twice (Toronto and Hamilton).
2: filling up every blank tape I had with their songs and driving my family insane.
3: drawing pics of Roland Orzabal (a la Seeds of Love).
4: crushing over Roland.
5: and throwing a tantrum worthy of F_W over not getting to see the video premier of Advice for the Young at Heart on Much Music (that was more family-related, as my dad was letting my sister get her way with the TV when they KNEW I wanted to see the vid. It counts as TFF wank because TFF was involved). Feels good to admit to that last one really - cathartic in a way.

But breaking up a marriage because Roland was sending them psychic vibrations via his music and whatnot...

TFF fandom has gone from wanky to horror flick.

Admittedly, the VMA's last night turned me into a knife wielding maniac (long story...) was over Johnny Cash losing to Missy Eliot and Metallica playing Nirvana and the White Stripes and stuff like that, but things like this make me happy I don't have some form of community to discuss this with, 'cause music boards = wank. "Duran Duran made MTV!"

I thought Elvis did?

Ahh...

I can understand the fans being upset, but not to this degree. MTV has gone to crap over the past five or so years. Does anyone else remember when they would do the international awards during the main show, and more than the same five videos got nominated for every award? I watched, and I was really not that impressed - but I wasn't expecting much.

Tho I do admit I cringed seeing Kelly and Avril give the award with Duran Duran. Not so much Kelly, but I was afraid we were going to have another episode of "David BOWie" with Avril. Oi.

I can understand the fans being upset, but not to this degree.

As I told someone else, it's wank that's built up for years. For instance, Duran have been neglected at all MTV's anniversary celebrations, Rolling Stone and NME have always given them scathing reviews and the only Grammys they've gotten were for video. Basically, they got as much respect a boybanders in the '80s because they appealed to teenage girls, and Durannies have been waiting for a lifetime achievement award.

So, you must understand that Durannies are a very sensitive, precious bunch. *g*

I was afraid we were going to have another episode of "David BOWie" with Avril. Oi.

Luckily, Duran Duran's a little harder to mispronounce even if she'd never heard of them.
