So now "it squicks me" = "Mary Sue"...?
"Oh no! Old people kiss! Icky icky icky ewwwww!!!"

NOT one of [info]pottersues' better moments.

Maybe it's a new radical definition of Mary-Sue.

(( Please. The author could have at least done us the decency of making this story take place when they were teenagers. It would make more logical sense that way. ))

Because when you're thirteen, anyone over twenty falling in love is simply not *logical* or *decent*! And it's Mary-Sue-ish too, because, um, well! Yes!

I didn't read the whole report, just saw "Minerva" and "Mary-Sue" and posted a comment. Rather rash of me, but she is one of my favourite characters. I am now part of teh wank!!11one!1 I feel special.

Well, to be fair, Dumbledore/McGonagall is a bit squicky, because of the 50-year age difference and stuff. On the other hand, it's not as if one is of consenting age and the other isn't *cough*Any Teacher/Any Student set before Student's 5th year*cough*.

On the other other hand (three hands! Yay!), the community is supposedly about Mary Sues, not about the sex lives of adults old enough to make their own damn decisions, no matter how they turn out. Find me a McGonagall!Sue with violet eyes and a magical, golden-maned unicorn that bursts out of her skull with a chalice full of mead, and we'll nitpick then.

Fifty? More like eighty if Dumbledore is 150 and McGonagall is 70 (more or less the ages that JKR gave them.)

I dunno...eighty years...serious cross-gen.

Three words: Anna Nicole Smith.

Thank you.

(Also: at that point, it's not THAT bad, considering. Sure, she's <1/2 his age, but I doubt anyone is in his age bracket that's available.)

Does said Sue survive this experience? :)

Well, maybe the eye and hair color descriptions were a little over the top, but a lot of people have insisted a lot of times that that alone doesn't make a Mary Sue- and I've seen worse in published romance novels. It really does seem to be just 'old-people sex' for most of the commentators.

I'm tempted to go over there and ask them if that means they would mind writing stories about an eighty-year-old Sirius and Remus, or Harry and Draco, but I don't want to add to the wank. (Besides, I'm too depressed to find out if the answer is "Yes! Ewwww!")

I say go for it! If only to make people see it can be done. It's amazing how many people will seriously defend the appeal of things that others consider squicky- twincest and bestiality among them- with, "Don't like, don't read," but have to campaign against old-people sex.

Well, in that particular case, the squick isn't so much in the age as it is the necrophilia. I mean, can you imagine the level of decay that'd be present after forty-five years? Eeeeewwww...

Oh gods, that's been posted outside snitchfiction?! I know it's supposed to be funny, but it still squicks me. Harry/Flobberworms + Harry/Hedwig, now there I could see the humor. [Flobbertongue at restrictedsection.org]

I don't like reading of old people's sex lives, but it doesn't matter to me if people write it... And I've got used to Albus/Minerva. I actually liked some Albus/Severus fic. Still, I don't like too much of the sort.

A few people do. And pottersues seems to. But there are also comments like this:

Agh. Agh. Old-people lurve. So did not need to see that, thank you very much.

That doesn't seem to be focusing on the Mary Sue, just on a personal squick- which in, this case, happens to be paired with bad writing, but isn't always. Considering how many bad HP Sues there are, it seems that people are objecting to this basically for a teenie reason.

The way I see it is that McGonagall is too professonal to start up a romantic relationship with her superior. Yes, she may look up to Dumbledore, and may even start to have (or even already have) a crush on him, but I seriously doubt she would act on it. Now, I can see them at this point having a relationship as close as brother and sister, but shit is happening and I don't think either of them would start up a romantic relationship while Voldemort is gathering power to launch another war. Now, after Voldemort is very, VERY dead... then it may be a different story. Ooh, idea...

Besides, wouldn't it be so cute if McGonagall developed a crush on Dumbledore? Two very awesome characters, both of which work very closely. She is a very practical woman, and he is a very powerful wizard... Damn it! I refuse to let this plot bunny get a hold of me!

::crushes plot bunny's wee little skull beneath her heel::

Sorry, don't do fanfic these days--and HP was never my fandom to begin with. ^^

And yeah, it could just be two strong people having a sort of mutual admiration society; in the right hands, it could be pretty nice. Of course, in the chotto chotto buttsex hands of your average HP ficcer, their purpose is to comment on how nicely Snape and Lupin seem to be working out now that that awful Sirius is out of the picture, and isn't it just a shame that Potter and Malfoy aren't old enough to pose in flagrante delicto for the yearbook? Except more l33t.

That is NOT Albus Dumbledore and that is NOT Minerva McGonagall.
