HP wanks again
Who remembers hp_spank? The self-proclaimed 'fandom wankers' of lj?

There's now a sister community - "In affilliation with hp_spank [but less mean]" - there is secrecy_sensor. Watchful_entity fangirl, maybe?

To get into the community, you have to fill out the application form, and then the community votes to let you know if you are elite enough to join. From the app:

_#_i guess you could call us snobby, but don't blame us. we only want the best of the best in this community.. and if that means being mean and rejecting you with harsh comments then oh well.. it had to be done. maybe you'll be smarter and become a better fan :D._#_

I do so hate to be predictable, though: We're so going to be wanked, guys...wait and seeeeeee.

But hell, it's teh funneh. *waves to own application in the comm - look ma! Self-wank! *snerk**

Because nothing makes you elite like being able to answer deep, intellectual, searching questions like "Who [what, surely?] would your animagus be?" and "What's your favourite scene in the movies?"

It's like the personality section of a beauty pageant for fen.

"_#_if you had the opportunity to ask J.K. Rowling one question, what would that question be? -"

Dear Ms. Rowling,

Does your fandom make you cry yourself to sleep at night?

Sincerely,

Bwha, these people crack me up.

Less mean means more passive aggressiveness, yes?

Nah, just less of a sense of humour.

(no, I didn't think that was possible either)

Ah, Harry Potter fandom. Where people are judged on their language and their answers to random questions, and the fandom is so wide you can find almost anything to suit your tastes.

All that's missing is a sense of irony.

I'm really tempted to fill in their application form very sarcastically and see if they take it siriusly seriously.

maybe you'll be smarter and become a better fan :D.

...and maybe you shouldn't use ":D" when trying to come off snobby and in-duh-lectual, 'cause you just look stupid.

And capitalization? It's your friend, it helps you to sound smart and elite and shit.

And being "elite" from "potterabes" (stupid, stupid word, jesus, it doesn't even sound mean, it just sounds like a fucking sports drink)?

Just makes you sad.

No no no. The truly elite don't need proper capitalization. Or proper ellipses.

Tangentially, what exactly is this ".." thing supposed to mean? I see it everywhere in online fandom circles. It's more than a period, and it's not quite and ellipsis. It's a perillipsis!

But the problem is that "perillipsis" sounds like some horrible face-rotting disease you'd get from South American fish or anteaters or something.

I think I have three there, lemme go back and count... *squints eyes* one...two...three...

Yeah, it's an ellipsis... but perhaps the perillipsis is a typo? Or a quirky new dance move sweeping the nation?

Dude, and the icon? Mucho with the coolage?

I think the application bits about the films are trick questions - if you even have a favourite song from the pictures you mustn't be elite enough. After all, you like the films and think DAn RaDClIFFfFf is SoooOOO HAWTTttttt.

I was bored, so I posted an application just to see if I could make it in... Apparently I am not 1337 enough to be a 1337z0rz comm member. Someone give me comfort sex. XD

My favorite part of this, though, is how some people reject applications because they're "clichéd"... because, you know, if one person states an opinion, everyone else who states the same opinion must be a copying poseur. Damn those Harry Potter plagiarists. X3;

I don't have a Journalfen account, so I must post anonymously. I go by Tviokh over on livejournal; arabel, don't you dare deny knowing me! ;)
Heh, I'll probably get my ass kicked out of the community for this one, but it seems that 95% of the community is nothing but applications.
Very little real discussion actually happens.
The few that have have been pretty good, but honestly, I get the same thing over in the Purebloods and Mudbloods communities.

I also get a kick out of the one certain user who claims to vehemently hate fangirls, yet will tell people 'no' if they say they don't like slash or her personal favorite pairings. That sounds pretty fangirlish to me. :D

Pretty much all the discussions that go on over there are ones that you find on hptheories, sane_potter, parryhotter, and the likes.

I got bored enough to shake things up and post an application in character... which got accepted to my surprise... but when my friend decided to do the same- they get bitchy with her.

This entire new application thing with the latest "troll" has almost made me think of the people there as nothing but uptight people. I mean honestly... can people joke around without getting their arse bitten off?

Oh well... whatever. If you make a comm like that you should expect to get wanked and expect trolls. It's the internet. Take it with a grain of salt, laugh, and move on.

Deny knowing you? I am honoured to associate with such snark! *bows* ~_^

I had reasonably high hopes that the comm would be fun, but as you say, it's mostly applications. The response to the 'in character' apps had me baffled as well - I've always enjoyed a little bit of role playing in snarky communities, and some people just seem a leetle highly strung. The members who use netspeak and fangirl all over the place in any case cracked me up - and convinced me to post this stuff here. ^_^
