Please forgive me if this posts more than once... (Slayers Wank!)
JFs kinda been on the fritz today. ^^;

And here you all thought Slayers was a dead community, and that no further wank could come from it! :O Think again! And may the Lord of Nightmares have mercy on your soul!

So, our little tale begins in a fanfic called "Rescuing the Damsel", in which a kidnapped-and-sold-into-slavery Lina Inverse is rescued by the dashing and noble hero... Zelgadis. Right. Not A/U, either. Straight continuity. Gourry? Oh, that lout's run off with Sylphiel! Amelia? Oh, she's just like a kid sister to Zelgadis. (3ven tho wE h8, hate, HATE taht BItScH!!1!one!) And *Nagha* is the most powerful sorceress in the world.

Yeah, anyone who knows anything about Slayers will only need to be told that little bit I posted up there to go "Buh?!" And several people tell the author so, but not before she gets several (dozen) reviews saying "OMG! TaHt was SO awEsome!!1 RitE MOOR, PLZ!!!1!" The author, crushed that her little world is hurt, posts a nice reply to her reviewers *all TWO of them that left less-than-nice reviews before she replied*.

No wank yet, huh? Well... Feast your eyes on the *real* reply, before she took it down and changed it! Then watch in amusement as BNF's come to smack her down in long-winded replies *one of which is even in disguise! :O*!

Queen at her, BNFs, queen at her!

I wondered if that one would make it here. It's just been fun reading the coherent critiques of the, um, "work" in question and comparing them to the mindless, cookie-cutter reviews of earlier.

Would you be surprised if I said she was the Queening BNF? ^^ Naw, didn't think so.

Oooooh, but maybe she's the BNF in disguise, too! XD

"The characters aren't out of character! The writer just characterizes them differently from the original creators!"

That's called fucking out of character, for fuck's sake!

<obligatory cheap pervy joke moment>

Considering she's wanting to pair up Lina with Zelgadis, I'd say they really ARE fucking out of character!

Heh. Don't talk to me, I think there IS Lina/Zel subtext. (And Lina/Xelloss. And Lina/Naga. And Lina/Amelia. ... Do we really need to go into this?)
I'm very uncanon about which pairings I'll ship, but I can be canon too. When I'm wildly uncanon, I'll admit it. However, sometimes I'll do non-canon pairings that I think there are actual possibilities for in the series. Then, when someone throws a fit and goes "NO! YOU CAN'T DO THAT! IT'S NOT CANON!"
I hate to bring Harry Potter into it, since everyone runs Harry Potter into the ground here at F_W, but Ron/Hermione is the easiest example. A lot of fans will rave about it being the only canon there is, when there's only very marginal support. I mean, there's as much, if not more, support for Ryoko/Ayeka as there is for Ron/Hermione. But pair either of them up with someone else and it's a bitchfest waiting to happen.
(Now, as I understand it, Lina and Gourry is somewhat more canon than not. However, since they're not married and with a bunch of kids by the end of Try, I'd hardly say the relationship is iron-clad and the only possible one.)

I 'shipped Zel/Lina briefly during the first season. The majority of the subtext is there. But then, at the time, everyone was also meeting everyone else for the first time, so the group dynamics were still trying to settle.

By the time TRY rolls around, there's actually more Zel/Filia subtext than Zel/Lina. What I see between Zel/Lina by the time TRY starts up is more of a comfortable old friendship. Not a romantic love, but the kind of platonic love that's borne out of a developed trust and friendship. The more I saw of their personalities, the less I could see the relationship working on a romantic scale. Just because two people work well in friendship doesn't always mean they'll click romantically. One of my best friends, a guy I dated before J, was like that. Fortunately, we agreed beforehand that no matter what happened -- we both knew it was a gamble to alter the relationship we did have -- we'd remain friends. The dynamics between us that worked -- and still work -- in friendship blew all to hell when it became a romantic involvement. We understood each other well enough to be an excellent team as friends, but nowhere near enough to support any kind of realistic possibility of a life together.

But then again, in just about anything I've seen -- not just anime but a lot of shows, there's subtext flyin' around like feathers in a pillow fight around the principle characters to the supporting cast. A lot of times though, it's a group dynamic/platonic chemistry. Chemistry doesn't always mean romantic love.

Vive le friendship!

ICON! I smell icon in that statement. And I'm overtired and punchy enough at the moment to be visualizing it with Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies in the icon... "Jed, where's my beatin' spork?"

That would be a groovy icon... but I don't think it would be complete without sound effects. Let's have... pigs screaming in the background as they are being slaughtered. Seems to fit this situation.

That little alien icon with the baseball bat is cute. Just delete the baseball bat and add a spork.

Well, it was a thread that got started in response to this post about GUTB.

Zanne has the Zel/Gollum icon, I wound up with a Frodo/Ame one, and J, and I believe UO, wound up with Gourry/Legolas. XD

....MAN. Wonder what would happen if someone threw GUTB at this wanker? ^^ But... *sigh* it looks like she took her story down. ;_; *sigh* One tear. :'(

...you're making this up, right?

I mean, I've only seen a couple episodes of Slayers and Next (as well as the movies Perfect and Great), but even I know that Slayers is about two things (at heart):

1) Lina being the most powerful sorceress in the world. And thus a bad motherfucker.
2 [movies]) Naga, apparently, having the biggest boobs in the world.
2 [series]) Lina, apparently, having the smallest boobs in the world.

Naga's not QUITE as incompetent in the manga as they made her out to be in her anime appearances. (She even got to save Lina's life once or twice.) But then, Lina seems to like Naga a bit better in the manga as well. Naga's chest is emphasized more in the anime, and she's relegated more to fanservice area.
But, yeah, she's nowhere near the greatest sorceress in the world, save in her own mind. (But then, she's from Amelia's family, what do you expect?)

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]zannechaos
2003-09-02 07:16 pm UTC (link)
And by TRY, Amelia's shaped up to be a pretty powerful mage in her own right. She's either mastered or is close to mastering two different disciplines of magicks: White and Shamanism. While she's not quite as strong as Zelgadis is in that respect, she's also not been practicing it as long as he has, yet she's clearly got a handle on some of the higher level spells in that area as well.

But then, Amelia's also got much better self-discipline by that point than I've seen in Naga in either mangas or the anime.

Amelia just doesn't get enough love, man. She's, what, sixteen? And she's already a high-level mage in *two* disciplines, one offensive and one defensive. She's shaping up to be a bad mofo in her own right as well.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Yeah, but Lina's a year younger than Amelia, I think, and she's the most powerful, so NO EXCUSE! *continues whipping Amelia* Work harder! Work harder! Use that tongue more!

*pets* I know, sweetie. ;_;

Myself, I've always liked Lina/Gourry, but not enough to write fics about it. ^^ My true calling has always been Xel/Fil. Since I have such a weird favorite pairing, my natural compulsion is to be revoltingly nice to those I don't happen to agree with, in the hopes that they'll one day be nice to people down the road.

Or at least provide me more wank when they act like demented 4-year olds. ^^

The thing is, I know EXACTLY where Lina/Gourry and Zel/Amelia fans are coming from. Their feelings reach out of the TV and slap you upside the head. I'm not going to rant about why I don't see the pairings in the long run, though.

Xel/Fil! Mmmm. Good stuff.

And I hope you have fun with the wank. *grin so innocent it's evil*
