Eh. Not really seeing the wank. It's one person venting about people (most likely RL people since it's hard to find anti-fans on the net who can straightfacedly claim they'e not just as obssessed with whatever keeps them on the net) who've dissed fannishness and made her feel small. Been there done that, and having that particular vent in some RL person's face would be silly and wanky, but in one's own LJ? A bit naively voiced, but it doesn't seem self-important or flamey (except at offline people who aren't seeing it).

I agree. It's a bit over the top but I really do empathize with this persons point. It is frustrating to have deal with folks who don't get what you like, and make it a point that you KNOW they don't get what you like.

I do think said writer proably should've taken a deep breath before posting, but I really have to agree with some of their points.

One replete with its own mythology (we were fans back before the Earth existed, and also we were part-dragon), its own sense of entitlement (how dare they mock me? Puny hyoomans! My love of Dr. Who clearly marks me as a superior evolutionary specimen!), and its own made-up lexicon (including the infamous "fanson"). On that glorious day I will erect a Maypole (I will rename it the Wankpole), and I will burn the first story found in every section of FF.net, and I will commission a fanartist to draw pictures of the event while a commissioned fanfic writer writes the mightiest filk ever written to the tune of "We Shall Overcome".

	I'm kind of seeing her point. Even if it is a bit over the top and maybe she needed to calm down a bit first, there are still some valid points there, to a fan. Hello, everyone. Writing here is Joan M. herself, the 'owner' of the wank (Wankmistress? WankLord?). I just thought I ought to maybe try to defend myself here.

Alright, before I start, I should probably make a disclaimer so this won't degrade into a flame war. I'm not angry, you people have the right to post what you will same as I do, and really, I'm just here to clarify a point or two, because some of you people - whom I can at times greatly appreciate, you've said a few oh-so true things in your time - seem to be mistaking with the same attitude that brought on this rant, so, hear me out, please? I'll be nice, I swear.

Firstly, there's the obvious matter of this being posted in my own livejournal in a heated moment of needing to vent. Stress the 'my own LJ' and 'venting'. I didn't walk up to the first mundane I saw and screamed in his face, I didn't break down in tears to my friends, or nothing of sorts. I posted my woes in my LJ, isn't this what my LJ is for? Really now. I was angry and felt the need for some caps lock and exclamanation marks, is that a sin? Come look at my LJ if you want and you'll see it's not exactly the temple of constant bitching. I rant rarely, so when I do, I can't help it being a loud one. Stress buildup, you know.

As for the cause of this stress, some of you may have the misconception that I am one of them Wind from Rainbow's End Get-A-Life fans. You know, the kind who can quote every Star Trek episode in full but not start a conversation with a non-fan if my life depended on it. I'm... not. Nor do I think the fans will one day rise and overcome, as much as I enjoy singing filks about it. I am, however, still very much abused for my fannish tendencies, no matter how well I function in reality, and from time to time feel the need to rebel, I'm pretty sure every fan feels it. Yes, it's an explosive loud firecracking rebellion, but it's not as if I marched into the White House with a sign reading "Fan Rights"...

I don't think I'll start on the "I believe" part, you clearly missed the point, but that's alright, maybe I should have phrased it differently.

You want to argue, go ahead. I like snarky fans, I usually support you people, which is why I maintain that this is a mere misunderstanding. You just happened not to have landed on a bitchy teen's whimperfest this time, I'm sure that happens, so let's talk.

And I disagree with the poster who said that Joanne shouldn't have come in here and post her viewpoints, even if many posts already are defending her. This is no more or less wanky than someone ranting about Smallville or OC or LoTR in their own journals.

HEY!!!!

First of all, I noticed this last week, but since when did Journal Fen allow anonymous commenting? I thought the whole point of not having anonymous comments, was that so people couldn't come in and go "WTF? No, I'm right, and you're all a bunch of meanies for wanking me!!!" whenever they got posted here. All that does is perpetuate the wank, and make F_W more like a battleground. The "no anonymous comments" policy always made lots of sense to me, really. And besides, there's usually plenty of people willing to give JF codes to anyone who *really* feels they must come in & defend themselves.

Now, I'm just speaking from my own experiences... but when I've gotten wanked over here, in general, it doesn't really help my case much if I come over and try to argue. I've tried it before, and just got a big headache and some lessons learned for my troubles. The person who's bringing the wank over is probably already convinced of the subjects wankiness, and me trying to prove myself right just makes me look even wankier. Did that make any sense? I'm not sure I'm using "wank" as a verb/adjective/noun correctly. *g*
