Not fandom, but definitely a big enough wank to share here, too.
And even if it's not really big enough yet, it certainly will be very soon...

from [info]otf_wank: Good ol' fashioned wank about LJ itself.

Gah! You narrowly beat me to it. ;)

I never noticed how wanky the world was until I joined this community. *sings* Wank is all around, no need to waste it...

Basically it comes down to one fact. People are inherently wanky.

Jesus christ on a pogo stick man, it's a layout! That you can CHANGE! What the fucking hell are people's problems?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

Some of the complaints DO have merit.

To be fair, not everyone CAN change back to the old skin - this seems to be a problem quite a few users of older computers are running into. Several people using Windows 98 with IE have reported that the mouseover menus don't function for them at all, so they can't navigate at all. My ancient Macintosh (OS 8.1/IE 5.0, running on a 56k dialup modem) freezes up every time I use IE to open the "Browse Options" link, and I have to reboot the computer. Kinda hard to change the skin if you can't even load the necessary page! And LOTS of people are reporting "issues" between the new skin and Macs of any age that are running IE, so it's definitely not the skin I'd want to leave as my default. Fortunately I have a more up-to-date PC at work, and was able to make the change there. Even more fortunately, the change I made stuck, and is also working on my home computer, too (some people are also reporting problems with that, having to change back to the old skin every time they log back on to the site or every time they access their LJ from a different computer). But I have a lot of sympathy for those users who suddenly found their LJ skin changed to something that won't work well for them, and are now seemingly stuck with it.

I can understand people being a bit disconcerted about it (I had switched to the new skin months ago so I didn't notice), it's the beligerence of people's attitudes that amazes me.

Much of that is certainly wankiness of the highest order. But some of it is also shock-induced, because the changeover occurred while the site was up and running. I was in the middle of posting when they did it, and about fell out of my seat before I realized what had happened was just a default layout change (I certainly hadn't expected THAT particular effect to happen when I hit the Post Comment button!). And some of it is frustration. It's no fun finding yourself suddenly forced to re-learn basic site navigation in mid-session, or dealing with buggy computer issues. If I hadn't been able to change the skin on my LJ accounts back to Dystopia on my work PC, I may very well have been one of those belligerent posters, as I certainly wouldn't have appreciated having my paid accounts abruptly become unusable because my Mac can't handle the "improved" skin and won't let me switch back to the old one.

Too bad they couldn't set the new skin as the default for new accounts only, and let the current LJ account holders decide for themselves whether to change over to it or not. I think such an "opt-in" approach would have gone over better than the "opt-out" one the LJ managers used. But I suppose it wasn't technically feasible.

DAMMIT! you beat me to it!

Did anyone get this lovely gem on the very first page?

Shuutan kicks it off by calling the new layout "a lot gayer, and retarded. [...] now it's just girly, and blue."

This garners a TON of comments.

CoffeeChica points out that: "Last I checked, blue was the most popular color representing boys anyway. Get a clue."

And the appropriately named CruelBitch says: "The new layout -is- retarded. It looks too vacuous, empty, with a colorscheme that burns my retinas with it's "heavenly glow". I don't need Angelina Jolie eyeing me from the right corner, I don't need to run my cursor over drag-menus [deal with them enough on stupid otaku fangirl webpages, thanks]"

The irony of that comment is that the picture she's complaining about? That's her user default icon. (Me, I see a closeup shot of Valgaav's eyes, myself.)

Personally, while it's admittedly very different, I've been able to use it off the test site before, and I prefer it. Once you get the hang of it, there's a LOT more features to LJ that are more readily accessible (such as the Manage Communities page, which always before I had to jump through hoops to get to, yet it made handling my communities far more easier.)

I think she probably knows that.

Personally, I agree with her. I like my default icon but I see no need to have it staring at me from every page I hit. I get burned out on icons fast enough without seeing them on every page, and it's a useless feature that takes up an awkward amount of room unneccessarily.

So maybe it's just my imagination but [info]flashfire seems to crop up in almost every other LJ wank. He doesn't actually tend to do much wanky stuff he's just there like the wank's shadow or something.

It's actually starting to creep me out...

I knew it! I knew I couldn't be the only one! I thought I'd gone crazy, seeing Flashfire around every corner. It was like The Birds! Only not.
