Hey, I found a mini-wank. A wank-in-waiting.
On the Calvin and Hobbes fan community, someone complains about the automobile decals of Calvin peeing on things.

The use of the best comic strip character of all time to debase car companies, political figures, other countries, etc. etc. etc., is something that really gets me riled up. I have almost gone off the road on numerous occassions because I have become so angry at my fellow drivers' non-comprehension of the Calvin character. Calvin would not pee on Chevy.

Not too much wank goes on in comments (yet); although the first poster tells him/her that s/he's taking things too seriously. There is a link to a previous post about the same issue in which a poster is told she will go to hell for having a Hobbes-peeing-on-Snoopy car decal.
And there's another post with an online comic strip semi-mocking the decals.

Calvin would not pee on Chevy!!

Am on LJ and a member of that community. I think the decals are rather amusing.

Those decals do annoy me, but mostly because they're all copyright infringements. The makers of them didn't obtain licensing for any of them. And yeah, I'm aware of the irony of a fanficcer saying that, but unlike SOME fanfic writers, I make no money from mine.

And actually, the ones of Calvin praying annoy me even more.

When I got my third tat, there was a guy in the studio getting one of the Calvin peeing on Ford/Chevy - hell if I remember which. I was like, you really want that on your body??

One of my former bosses said it happened because BW didn't license his characters quickly enough - sort of like the "if you don't enforce a trademark you lose it" situation. I don't know if it's true, but that's what I was told.

I'm not a lawyer, but....

My understanding of it is that a trademark (as distinct from a copyright, which is automatic) has to be consistantly enforced to remain enforceable. So, while Watterson wouldn't be required to do active marketing to assert his claim to the trademark, it's conceivable that if he didn't bother with tracking down and suing the sticker producer for long enough, a judge could decide that the trademark had passed into common usage and wasn't enforceable. Something similar happened with aspirin, which was originally a trade name for (I think) Bayer, but was adopted into generic usage, which voided the trademark. I've actually seen full-page ads in writer's magazine from companies like Xerox and Kleenex, begging writers not to use their product names as a generic term for photocopies and disposable tissue respectively, for fear of the same thing happening to them.

What's more likely is just that the stickers are produced in so many small batches by so many ma-and-pa print shops and fly-by-night operations that it's simply impossible to stamp them out, or at least not worth the hassle.

Personally, I'm annoyed by the decals too. Even if we were living in a bizarro-universe where these were licensed products, they'd still be in terrible taste.

But if I worked myself into a frothing rage each time I saw one, I'd probably be dead by now. I just think of them as "redneck radar" and conduct myself accordingly. ;)

Personally I happen to find the ones with Calvin kneeling in front of a cross kind of maddening.

my friends dad has one of calvin peeing on LA. I think its fricking hilarious. And he's got connections to the Mafia, so that is what I associate the decals with :-D

I don't really care for those decals of Calvin either, but eh, to each his own. Though, i am very amused by the similar ones i've seen of Beavis and Butt-Head...

I remember, when I was little, I was confused as to whether those things were supposed to be Calvin or not, because they were so poorly drawn ...

One wonders, though... why Calvin? I mean, yeah, he's a little bad boy, but it's not like peeing on things was some penchant or trademark of his. I don't really recall him ever peeing on something to make a statement. So what's with choosing CALVIN to pee on things you don't like?

It's a sprite from Furcadia: or, more accurately, a patch that makes the canine sprite look anime-ish.

After a good deal of frustration with a small program that claimed to be for making exactly that type of gif, I gave up and screencapped from the player editor and made one myself.

Calvin would not pee on Chevy!!

My dog's name is Calvin, and he'd pee on anything.

(He's not named after the comic strip.)

Well I loved C&H but I always thought Watterson was pretty wanky himself with his whole 'merchandizing is EVIL' stance.

Yeah, I have to admit that if anything tainted C&H for me, it was Watterson being a smidge full of himself. I love the comics from both men, but I swear him and Addams could create some kind of ultimate uber-wank for the comic world with their yin/yang views on marketing and input from the fans.

Loved this quote from the threads though:

Everyone wanted a Hobbes doll, but it still won't come to life and that DOES ruin the magic. You can't refute that.

It wouldn't?? Shit, now you tell me.
