Mary Sue vs. The PPC
I really hope nobody's done this one before; I checked the community memories and didn't find it.
Feel free to slap me if I overlooked it.

It's a slightly older one (from June), but it still makes me laugh every time I read it.
It's not so much that the thread itself is overly wanky, but the Anti-Mary Sue People Are All Losers and Must Suck Really Bad. They burn churches, lynch people and they probably kick puppies too. fic in and of itself warrants at least a mild wank...I think. If not for the whiny story, for the fact that one of the members of the group it came from is the one responsible for getting MSTs pulled from fanfiction.net ^_^

Bed's for losers. The good lord gave us coffee. and coke. and other various caffineated beverages. Satan just gave us comfy pillows and nice warm blankets and I just lost track of what I was saying.

mm. bed.

So... *snort* you're telling me... that Mary Sues are being likened to churches, great works of art, and Virginia Woolf?

*sporfle* What the hell.

Sure, kid. Whatever.

You know, if it's well-written and intelligent enough, most times it ceases to be a Mary Sue. S'my opinion, at least.

It's my opinion, too. Mary Sues are, by definition, crap. A well-conceived, well-executed original character is something entirely different.

Yeah, that's the thing that always threw me about the Mary Sue defenders, since to me a Mary Sue, by definition, is something that sucks. If it was an original female character that was actually well-rounded and compelling, we wouldn't call them a Mary Sue, we'd call them an original character. We're lazy like that.

I've heard some people claim that Mary Sues are just good fun, or indulgence for a writer, or improve someone's writing skills. To which I say: Then have your fun or indulgence or improvement on your own hard drive, please.

Well I've got nothing against the Mary Sue kidlettes out there. They don't provably cause cancer anymore than I do so I don't see the harm in them writing their little brains out. It's not like they thrust the stories into my hand like a Jack Chick pamphlet or anything. I just dispute the claim of a "good" Mary Sue since to me that's an oxymoron.

I don't mind the ones who don't know what a Mary Sue is. It's the people who claim to be writing a "good Mary Sue" or "rehabilitating [tired plotline x]" or "writing a self-insert who's pretty and has special powers and warps the canon world but is fun to read about, honest!" who get my goat.

This seems to happen quite often in LOTR fandom, which has enough unintentional Sues as it is. Come on, people who know better, write something else!

And sometimes they're just fun to kill:

Mary Sue has her place. Of course, I think it's either in humor fic or in the bottom drawer. I committed Saavik-Sue and Willow-Sue in my writing days.

I've done Sues/Stus in my time, too. Writing for self-indulgence is fine, fun, and all the rest, but when they put their self-indulgence up and expect to get praised for it, it's silly to expect the reader's indulgence.

What happened to the other seven hundred or so purists out there in the Tolkien fandom? Did they get eaten by the giant spiders or choke to death on the sheer gall from Ms. Mary Sue?

Can I be part of the secret society? Do I have to provide my own hoodie?

If there's a free hoodie involved, I'm in too. I need a good hoodie.
