Comic/Roleplaying/Vampire/Gothic Wank

First, a little background: White Wolf (publisher of various roleplaying games, including Vampire: the Masquerade and Werewolf: the Apocalypse) is suing Sony over the movie Underworld. (full text of the complaint).

Penny Arcade has a comic about it. Discussion ensues. Much of the discussion is straightforward, but some threads descend into wank. (ok, link #3 there is just for funny)

Highlights include:
warring STFU graphics
Sure I started slinging insults first, but I'm right so he's a troll.
Don't call my icon gay!

That comic was right on the money. And really--considering that WW's last attempt at film/TV was "Kindred: The Disgrace," they should be happy that someone's translating some of their pretentious faux-angst to the screen so they don't have to.

Indeed. Though I'm fond of the name "Kindred: The Embarrassed" myself. ;)

And yeah, love the comic.

There are a few more similarities than "angsty vamps and werewolves," though. I think White Wolf has a case under current law; it really does seem to be the WW universe with the names changed and the serial numbers filed off.

I think you're onto something there. White Wolf might indeed have a case here-- though I still doubt they'll be legally rewarded.

But frankly, I don't really care anymore about White Wolf and their recent "plot twists" to Vampire the Masquerade. I *used* to love Vampire the Masquerade-- though the constant Waaaaaaaaahngst could get to me sometimes, and their gaming fiction sucked the big one. But the horrible, idiotic and awful game evolution that's going to come through with Gehenna finally dropping down like a glacier on top of my players is awful enough to just. Make. Me. Quit.

I revise my opinion. The accusations that White Wolf makes against Underworld in the formal court case are RIDICULOUS.

Specifically, they go on a whole spiel about how Lucita is *their* vampiric shadowy rebellious assasin of death, and how Selene, the vampiric shadowy rebellion assasin of death from Underworld, is a direct rip-off.

Pshaw. Yeah right. Like there have never been sexy (and completely idiotic) female vampire assasins before. Right, White Wolf. They must have copied that idea straight from you!

Hey, I refuse to forgive White Wolf for just letting Changeling die. For YEARS we were told we were gonna get at LEAST Kithbook: Boggan out of them (they still have my money for a pre-order) and the next thing you know, White Wolf is closing down the World of Darkness, and Changeling is listed after frickin' MUMMY in the games covered by the last book.

[/rant]

I'm better now. Honest.

Oh, I hear you.

It just drives me *crazy* that White Wolf has created such amazing games and alternate realities (though the World of Darkness can be obnoxiously angsty at times...) and now they're just willing to piss it all away. And for what? A whole new game system that'll probably go through bugs and bumps for the first 2 or 3 years, and has no guarantee of being nearly as great as the old one.

Changeling was, IMNSHO, the best of the WoD sequence. Figures that they'd drop it.

They never did a Kithbook: Eshu, did they?

Yeah, they made one, but it's a little hard to find at times.

Every once in a while, one will appear over on the Changeling Book Underground Railroad, but they seem to be out of it at the moment.

It was from a book cover. I've seen it before, somewhere, but I can't quite recall where.

Yeah, she said! *points in appropriate direction to the post with the link*

Or it could have been an email list a friend's on; it's for pulp fiction/paperback covers. She sends me some now and then.

There's another I like: The Gods Hate Kansas.

They stopped making Changeling?!

WTF??

Damn, I loved that game! When I sold off my WW collection (90+ books), the only Changeling book that went bye-bye was The Shadow Court -- and that only because I told the guy I'd toss it in if I found it in the wasteland that was my closet.

I even bought the short story anthology -- the novels, except for Bassingthwaite's Pomengranates, Full and Fine sucked.Fuckers, fuckers, fuckers.

Yeah, they haven't printed any new books since either Kithbook: Redcap or The Kingdom of Willows, which were back in around 2000.

They shuffled it around for a while, told us lies, and now they're just HAPPENING to mention it in the last WOD book...after Mummy. Mummy gets higher billing than Changeling.

You might say I'm mildly ripped. I ADORED that game...

Ya know, somehow I just looked at that comic and KNEW the wank was gonna come rolling in. I think it was the mockery of Anne Rice that tipped me off. Thus, I avoided the thread like the plague.

I believe Tycho himself said it best on the news post with:

"It became clear that if I was to continue playing Vampire, that would require hanging around with the sort of people who played Vampire, which is something I think we all want to avoid."

Yeah. I was hit with a revelation a few weeks ago: I am destined to make a student film documentary called "Velvet Fangs: A Larp-ology". I guess WW would sue me for that.

Oh, you mean Penny Arcade fans are being wanky? Um... shock. Yes, complete shock. And awe. I would never, ever think that fans of a comic that trolls its own readerbase would be wanky. I'm just... shocked, I say!

They troll their own readerbase? Would you care to elaborate?? Considering that recently a friend presented Gabe with the idea of doing Gabe/Ty fanart at a comic con and Gabe was totally gung ho for the concept of being slashed, I find it hard to believe these guys are too anal about what their fans make of their comic.

The whole "furry hate" thing they did, and Scott Kurtz later ripped off from them. They were basically trying to cause a big stink and give their forumers something to get all wanky about.
