To make a long story short 'How dare you insinuate Nascar is a bunch of hillbillys driving in circles!!!"

Well, to be fair, I bet the fans of Nascar who AREN'T hillbillies or slack-jawed rednecks or whatnot do get a little tired of being told that they are just because of the entertainment they enjoy, just like anime fans get tired of being told they're pathetic sad-sacks who still watch "cartoons", or comic fans get tired of being told they're wasting money buying "kid's reading".

Well, the guy who made the comment was making fun of himself. The person who got outraged missed the point entirely; and then some others decided to wank at him.

The original poster summed it up greatly, I think, at the end of his comment midway down the thread.

I LOVE this comment, though. One of my favorite typos ever.

>>That's just ignorant. Plane and simple.>>

*facepalm*

And is it just me, or is that the, uh, trying not to look like a snob here, the colloquial usage of "ignorant"? I thought only people around here said "ignorant" (pronounced: "ignernt") to mean "rude." If it's nationwide I'm going to need a drink. And I don't drink.

Definitely nation-wide. In fact, I thought it was solely a Black thing.

'Round here it's part of the general lexicon, connected to a local accent spoken by all ethnic groups. Nnnnot all sociological groups, though. And I'll stop before I start getting My Fair Ladyish all over the place.

I forgot to add - we sometimes pronounce it "ignant" and basically gets applied to any uncouth behavior.

Nascar IS a bunch of hillbillies driving in circles. I'm allowed to say that because I'm related to the late Dale Earnhardt. And also, because it's true.

I have an off-topic question. Do people get as piss-drunk at Nascar races as they do at horse races? So far as that, I can't really tell the difference, aside from the stereotypes (Nascar = hillbillies, horses = gamblers and rich folk).

yes they do! i dont go to nascar races, but i do go to NHRA races every once in a while and i hear stories about them all the time from my stepdad, who's a hotrodder. people get veeeerrry drunk at races. it's like a convention for sci-fi/fantasy/anime/whatever fans... just another excuse to get drunk with lots of people who share interests. :D

Except that I've been to a lot of sci-fi/fantasy/anime/gaming/etc. cons over the past 12 years or so, and I've never seen a whole lot of drinking at any of them. A lot of sugar, yes, and a whole lot of caffiene, but never a lot of drinking. (Except for a couple of the Celebrity Guests at the comic cons in NYC, who were known for being easier to find at one of the local bars than at their own tables. Some of them even gave autographs there, IIRC.)

Maybe I was just hanging out in the wrong places, though? Because, oh, what I wouldn't give to see the drunken brawling that could happen between rabid Star Trek and rabid Star Wars fen! That would rock!

I've wondered about this myself. The heavy drinkers at cons I've been to have always been the guests (hello, every British actor ever!). There's booze at MediaWest, but I've never seen anybody totally assdrunk because, dammit, you can't read, write, draw, or shop if you're tanked. Worse, you can't work the VCR.

The single Worldcon I attended had a lot of alcohol available, but I was watching my roommate try not to die of influenza ("Wake me for the Midnight auction...*hak*...I want that Howling presskit...*kek*"). It also had condoms. This was the place I learned that one should not try to inflate a spermalubed condom, because it just goes flying across the room.

nascar was started by the boys during (and after) the prohibition...they souped up their cars to be fast enough to run from the law, but after prohibition ended they ended up driving in actual races to make money. though... most of them still ran moonshine. nascar stays true to its roots! XD drunken hillbillies.

The maddest my daddy ever got at me was when I said, "I don't see what the big deal about NASCAR is - it's the same five rednecks who win all the time anyway."

My daddy IS a redneck, mind.

I'm from Alabama (no longer, thank god), and I can say with a great deal of authority that NASCAR is definitely just an excuse for rednecks to turn left for several hours. (My dad once said after a bike crash that he KNEW he had a concussion when he managed to watch an entire race start to finish on TV.)

The frightening thing is really the fans. I once drove by the Talledega Super Speedway during a race - there was a field filled with RV's, and at least half of them were flying the Confederate battle flag.

I happen to have grown up in California, with a father who not only started taking me to NASCAR races when I was in the fucking womb...

I knew someone would bring up mpreg in there somewhere...

But really, that was some feat of daddy's there.

No, no, you've got it wrong.

Mummy had a detachable womb, which Daddy took to the races, because Mummy didn't want to go.

Or maybe he just knocked Mummy out and dragged her there against her will...

Hahaha! I do love that group, for so many reasons.

NASCAR is pretty popular in this area. I personally don't see the draw, to me it's boring as hell watching cars go round and round for hours, but eh, if someone else likes it..

Probably the main archive out there for it. Used it for a brief time when I was interested in and writing Nascar fic. Something's telling me that I must be the only black chick from Jersey that's interested in this...
