Well I think it's wanky and I'm not biased at ALL!
Now the Hated Character LJ seems to come from a good place. I understand that it must be frustrating to watch fangirls bash a character you love simply because they aren't HOTT enough.

But sometimes it's an oozing barrel of wank, see this post: http://www.livejournal.com/community/hated_character/10123.html#cutid1

{Peter Pettigrew, Harry Potter: I own an lj community for him, which pretty much says it all. I just don't see him as this evil coward who hero worshipped James and Sirius (JKR - not impressed with your new book Peter wise. grr). I've really argued him to death on my own lj and other places, but he has to be mentioned.}

So I guess Rowling was wrong when writing her OWN character.

{Still, most people cast her off as the Sasuke groupie and treat her awfully. I think one reason can be that Naruto, at least from what I've viewed on FanFiction.net, is only getting attention from slash fans. And I don't think that's fair considering there's really no hints toward slash in the series aside from the very small, very miniscule ones that all manga/anime has between characters. It's not to say I'm not a fan of slash. I write it too. But in Naruto it doesn't work for me.http://www.livejournal.com/community/hated_character/9277.html#cutid1 }

Here that folks, Sasuke nearly dying for Naruto, not slashy. Orochimaru saying that the relationship between Sasuke and Naruto is one of the greatest threats to his plans, not slashy. However hooking him up with a girl he barely speaks to who's crush seems more like flat out mental illness. TRUE LOVE!

[Not biased in the least.]

Wormtail? Of all the characters, she fixates on Wormtail?

And i like how further down they talk about how Percy is just misunderstood, that his whole family except his mother picked on him and that's why he turned out the way he did in book 5.

Um...it couldn't be because Percy is a stubborn semi-arrogant ass, could it? He always came across that way to me.

Nope not at all.

Actually this is where I think the wank comes in. I can understand saying that characters like Percy or Wormtail are interesting and they need more development.

It's another to claim they are like the'usung heroes' of HP and it's not their fault one's a coward and the other uptight and neurotic.

Word.

I write stories about Peter because I think he's interesting and, at some point way back when, he wasn't evil. But ya know, I acknowledge that he grew up into a traitorous snivelling scumbag. Cause dude, canon.

Yeah, that's what gets me too. Why do some people just HAVE to look at an evil/jerky character and go 'oh he's just misunderstood, he must have been abused, etc.' You know..some people are just evil assholes.

And i do find Percy an interesting character..but still, he's screwed up.

...it also truly confuses those of us who like, say, "uptight and neurotic." (I alienated about 99% of the fandom, I think, by squeeing madly at Percy in OotP.) If you don't like a character the way he's presented in canon, then how on earth can you say you like a character? Am I missing something?

I agree about the Peter post, because the most irritating thing about the fandom reaction to OotP was people complaining that Rowling didn't do it right , i.e. she forgot she was supposed to read people's favourite fanfics and duplicate their characterisation and pairings. Bad Rowling, to write her own book.

But the second one... I don't see really see how someone pointing out that bashing of "obstacle" female characters sometimes goes hand in hand with a slash focus, or saying they don't understand the justification for a particular pairing, is all that wanky.

Uh. Yeah. *koff* Very small, miniscule ones. ::too lazy to search for the others::

I can understand Naruto yaoi not being one's cup o' tea--or any slash for that matter (after all, being a 'slash' writer doesn't automatically mean you have to love every single yaoi/slash pairing out there), but 'very small, miniscule ones' in reference to the hints?

I think that's understating a leeeeeeeeeeeeeeetle bit.

But that's just me.

Yeah, I think "miniscule" is just their way of trying to slant the statement.

However, after you've gone around looking for slash subtext everywhere, it becomes more obvious to you right away. What is incontrovertible proof that X and Y are shagging like rabbits right offscreen would look like a handshake to someone who isn't looking for it.

In other words their gaydar is tuned lower.

I'm a little biased; I like slash, but I also like non-sexual friendships/relationships between characters, which are, of course, unheard of in fandom. So where someone is going "OMG they are sooooooo doing it," I'm going "Aw, how sweet."

Call me a rube or an idiot or whatever you like; my main point is that people read things different ways. That's why it's SUBtext and not text. It's open to interpretation.

those pictures remind me that i really, really should've spent more time downloading naruto than wolf's rain or spiral or dnangel. i took it as a sign that those three all downloaded at 20+k/s and naruto downloaded at 1k/s. fate is cruel, but i can always buy the manga whenif i get some money.

i hate it when people ignore things like that and say "oh well it doesnt mean anything, its just normal" instead of just saying "ok, it means something. but not what you want it to mean! you just read way too much into things" or something like that.

I don't care for Peter Pettigrew too much, but I sure do pity him. It just seems like Sirius Black has a strong tendency of expecting everyone to be just like him. Maybe that's why Peter betrayed them.

Not that there's any excuse for what Pettigrew did, I mean a slew of people died because of him.

Um... isn't that what he WAS? I'll just not really mention that we see the worst of him because we're not SUPPOSED to emphasize with him, cause that goes without saying.

"Still, most people cast her off as the Sasuke groupie and treat her awfully."

As if the series itself were the shining example of modern day feminism and all. I like Sakura, but she's got a terminal case of Cluelessfangirlitis... how do you think people are going to portray her? I understand that there is no "middle-ground" as far as characterization goes on Fanfiction.net goes, but the same can be said of anyone else in any fandom.

Yrgh. Of course Sakura cares for Sasuke as a comrade, but the love thing, IMO, is an immature infatuation she's nurtured since before she even knew him. As a character, she hasn't fully self-actualised, because she balances a large chunk of her sense of self-worth on whether or not Sasuke acknowledges her. Sasuke, for his part, consistently treats Sakura like shit whenever the issue of his ultimate ambitions is raised, because he wants it very clear that she should not be involved and that he is never going to abandon his goal for her. Sakura tolerates abuse, of course, because he's her twu wuv and she'll even abandon her home and ethics for his sake!

It's really sad, actually. Hardly the stuff of romance, since one of them is an emotionally retarded, selfish, hateful and power-hungry jerk who desperately needs therapy, and the other is obviously due for serious maturation and has a few harsh realisations in her future. (I don't say the slash pairings are any more realistic, either, because Sasuke is still Sasuke, and that has nothing to do with whether or not he's gay.)

This is one of the main issues I have with Sakura. For such a bright girl she can be maddeningly stupid at times.
