I'll delete this in an hour (or someone can do it for me) but can everyone who wants to talk the "rule" thingy come over here (had to create a new group as the FW one doesn't have that feature) and talk it out in the chat room.

Because it's so much easier than going by comments, and people can really say what they feel, and why. And we can talk it out properly.

Okay.

I said all I have to say in the comments. If asshat mods start enforcing rule three, I'm either going to kil them or leave the group.

*hugs and givs her a squid cookie* Hey hun, we're just going through some bumpy times. Everything'll get straightened (*cough*) out and we'll all be happy to roam free and giggle at wankers again.

Because you know there's really only one asshat around... :)

OK, if chat is a no, how about this:

There seem to be two opinions here - those who want a modded community that has less icons and newbie posts and crap, and those who want a fairly free community where mods only take out trolls. Personally, I'm more for the second option myself, but I am getting annoyed by a lot of the dross that's posted here.

Why not do an LJ poll? Let everyone in the community vote, and whichever gets more votes is the way to go. I think that's the fairest thing to do.

Icons, repostings of old wanks, "hi I'm new" posts.

There's nothing bad about them, I just find them uninteresting.

I'm with you on the icons, I know some people love them to little minty balls, but (for example) I've seven on my lj account, and I use about three, so people posting loads more tends to lose me somewhat.

I don't mind posts discussing or linking to previous wanks, though obviously they're better if they've something new to say or are funny. But then wank posts in general are better if they're funny, IMO.

Dross poster: yadda yadda.
Annoying Mod: *sparkly vaseline-covered smile* We want this to be a happy friendly board, so please don't post dross! Thank you! [[ dross x 2 ]]
Dross poster: No it's not dross. [[ dross x 3]]
Annoying Mod: Yes it is, you see, blah blah blah. [[ dross x 4 ]]
Busybody poster #1: I liked it, it was good dross. [[ dross x 5 ]]
Dross poster: Oh I'm sorry -OR- Fuck you. [[ dross x 6 ]]
Annoying Mod: That's okay! I know you didn't mean to! *sparkly vaseline-covered smile* -OR- Tsk tsk! Let's keep it civil please! *sparkly vaseline-covered grimace* [[ dross x 7 ]]

I think that's part of the problem - find them uninteresting and moving on is one thing. Implying/Suggesting/Commanding people not to post them is another.

That's what a scroll bar is for. Uninteresting? SKIP THE DANG POST. That's what I do--scroll down (and back up) and pick something to read. I don't read everything and I skip what I find boring/uninteresting/confusing. I can do it--why can't you?

Who cares about what you find uninteresting? Using your likes and dislikes to dictate to the rest of us is ridiculous and downright rude.

Moderate the trolls. Try to moderate the rest of us and we'll leave. I'll certainly leave, anyway.

Aw, now I've got the vapors! Fans...

Define dross.

Whatever the mod(s) don't like, apparently.

And hey, I'll be fair. I mod communities under another name m'self, and I am notoriously HARDLINE. Rules, warnings, bannings, the lot. I run a tight ship, and I've got some damn fine communities as a result. HOWEVER. This community will suffocate if you try that here. I'd keep it to a minimum, really.

PS: I didn't link that original post because dude, it happens EVERY TIME WE DISCUSS A BNF. Every time. I didn't think it needed a link. May as well link oxygen. *wink*

You know, whenever I see something like this, my first response tends to be along the lines of Frodolemite, there:

Mod: The icon posts and newbie posts are making the group unreadable!
Me: Um, what icon posts and newbie posts?

It's hard to get a decent look when the "back" function doesn't seem to support the skip=25 thing, but I counted, and out of the last 25 posts there were maybe three that were icon posts/newbie posts/new community posts, and one of those was iffy because while the person in question did indeed say something about being a newbie, the post also asked what I felt was a question worth talking about, or at least a thread worth joking around on. If that's a reasonable sample, and actually it seems a bit on the high side to me, that's still 88% of the posts on-topic, which is not too damn bad for a large, uncohesive, lightly moderated group. I think we're doing a not-too-shabby job at self-policing, personally, and haven't found nearly enough posts that don't interest me for the "If you don't like it, don't read it" thing to become burdensome.

I love fandom_wank, but this is getting really exasperating. I've been reading it since it was on LJ, not too long after it got started, and it has always been this loosely structured, and to the extent that it has evolved it has evolved away from off-topic posts and personal vendettas disguised as wankery and all the other things that are supposedly such problems now.

I have faith that if I make a stupid post, y'all will tell me so, and it won't get much traffic; and in all honesty, having 25 people tell me that the post is off-topic or inappropriate is going to weigh far more heavily than one mod telling me that I shouldn't have made the post because it's on a topic that he/she does not personally find interesting. I also don't believe that the fact that Stormfreak is a fuckwit or her friends are trolls or Sara T thinks we exist for the sole and specific purpose of being mean to her means that we all need a good smackdown. We're not children. We don't need to be told to think before posting. Nor should "think before posting" be equivalent to "figure out if this is something the mods will find interesting so that I don't get a ration of shit for posting it."

This is becoming long and wanky, so I'm going to end on this note: I don't think we need a shitload of rules and heavy-handed moderating. I don't think the posting standards ought to be "Whatever the mods have decided they don't object to today." I don't want to have to come here and feel like someone's sitting in judgment on my degree of funniness with their finger on the delete key. I think this means that I'm going to have to go back to lurking and use my friends-only JF for pointing and laughing purposes, but it's a damn shame.

Thanks for taking the trouble to post all of that. I think I'll be able to stop screaming now.

One thing that brings people to f_w is the frustration that comes from seeing others do stupid, destructive stuff to their online communities and not being able to do anything about it. Seeing it happen here is like some sort of nightmare.
