however, it lacks the immeidate pathos that those authors tend to invoke...

Hee! Pseudo-literary critic-ese sounds a lot more convincing when you spell "immediate" right.

um...explain to me the tenets of plagiarism again...

Do you have to name the source of inspiration or the title of a piece? That seems pretty innocuous, especially "inspiration" because that's tenuous at best.

Decidedly odd.

Grr. Can't figure out how to reply when there's no reply link, but I'm replying to the above post:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Especially since I checked the original post and the title of her story is "Famous Last Words" which seems to me like one of those phrases that's just sort of in the general consciousness. Everyone knows it. I, personally, did not know it was the title of a book. Eh, but whatever.

They mentioned intellislash, which made me think of intellicocks, so it's all good.

Reminds me of the debate that pops up occasionally on boards where there are a lot of newbie fic writers..."You stole my title!" "No I didn't, I made it up!" "I had it first!" etc... *sigh*

And then there are the ones who claim to have copyrighted their characters' names...

"u can't use 'Alaranthamirianielle' as your chara's name!!!!!!111 That's MY chara's name!!!!111 i've COPYWRITED it!"

Sort of like the "You stole my Draco icon! Even though it's the official pic and it's plastered everywhere on the entire net, I know you stole mineeeeeee!"

*snicker* I like the way the troll then turns on everyone else in the thread, is banned, then comes back as Anonymous. It's so comforting to know that no matter what, trolling never dies. You can beat them, bribe them, starve them, and yet they troll on.

Wow...way to troll, whoever that was!

I never heard of Timothy Findley before this, but isn't it possible that *he* used "Famous Last Words" because he'd heard it bandied about before? I am not interested enough to go research the whole thing, really.

And who cares? It's such a common phrase that it seems like it would be like a public domain thing or something..still, what do I know? I'm here for the wank!

This whole wank makes my head hurt. If I recall correctly from last night, the deleted post in response to "And I still miss TWaV, btw." was "Who are you?" And then it was deleted for being insulting?

*doesn't get it*

And, wah, I think it'd be a whole lot funnier if I knew what the hell they were talking about. Seems like the phatphatkitty person keeps threatening to reveal something and then... doesn't.

I give this wank 3 and three quater stars.

Okay, the journal entry is protected now... but am I to understand that the fic writer used the title "Famous Last Words"? And was accused of plagiarising Findley because of it? If so, I find that amusing, as I was once accused of doing the same thing in an essay about Findley, and my instructor tried to fail me for it. I appealed, and won, because "dishonourably discharged" is NOT a phrase that was unique to the story, damnit. Neither is "famous last words" unique, really.
