Harry Potter wank
Okay, this is my first post to fandom_wank, so I hope this qualifies.

I was reading the Harry Potter thread over at Fametracker tonight and the discussion was pretty reasonable until Captain Pedantic decided to hijack the thread to discuss why Harry Potter needs a gay character--preferably Snape and Lucius Malfoy. Now I don't have a problem with slashing the potterverse, but this just came across as a little over-the-top to me. You be the judge--http://www.fametracker.com/ijsbb/forum.cgi?a=list&f=6&d=5&t=461988&n=34,1#n

I think my favorite bit of the rant is this little line-- My view is, if one is selling so very many books and making so much money, why not use the opportunity to create something astonishing, rather than just thinking "I could crap between two bits of paper, photocopy it for everyone to see and it'd still sell like hotcakes! I'll be richer than Bill Gates!"?

I like to think JKR is an intelligent woman who wants to challenge her readers, anyway.

Edited to fix the link, sorry about that I posted right before bed and didn't realize I hadn't posted a direct link until this morning.

Oh, riiiight. Cause the best thing we could possibly do is make one of the least appealing characters gay on top of being evil and/or sinister. That'd sure get the message out that homosexuals are not people to be avoided and feared.

Yeah, I think someone's getting their fanon and canon confused.

And it would be "astonishing" and, of course, wildly original. 'Cause, you know, that never happens, say, everywhere plus half the Disney movies.

Which "least appealing" character do you mean? Cause me, personally, I think they're both hotties--Lucius the minion of evil and greasy-haired, snarky, big-nosed bastard Snape. And that's just based on the books...

Frankly, if she decides to go with an alternative lifestyle thing, I'd go for Remus and his late dog. *bemoans the doggie's death*

They're cool, masculine, and not exactly the stereotypical gay guys.

Waves Remus/Sirius flag.

Evil people, however, should not be portrayed as gay, as that wouldn't help matters much. Snape, maybe, but not any of the Malfoys. Snape is inherently a "good guy", even if he is evil.

I'm not a fan of that argument. The fact is that there *are* evil people who are gay, black, female, or whatever. Refusing to present anyone other than straight white men as villains and painting everyone else as saints and martyrs is, IMNERHO, doing a disservice to us non-SWM's and makes us just as two-dimensional as if you assumed that all gay men slut around, or that all black men are drug dealers. Replacing one stereotype with another isn't the solution--it's to let characters be as complex and contradictory as real people.

Snape, maybe, but not any of the Malfoys. Snape is inherently a "good guy", even if he is evil.

Um, no. Snape is, presumably, good. He is not nice, which is what makes him such an interesting character to me.

...he DOES forget that Lucius is not only married to a rat-faced and not beautiful wife, he also has a sinister, racist, sniveling, yet strangely homoerotic son?

Snape, I can sort of understand (since canon doesn't pair him with anyone). And he's not completely evil--he is portrayed as having some sort of a conscience. It's just that canon's written from Harry/Gryffindor perspective (hence the scant appearance of Ravenclaws, exploitation of Hufflepuffs, and evilness of Slytherins), and even there Snape's not painted as a total Death Eater.

And NO, I don't have anything against Gryffindor.

He's an aristocrat, so neither of these matter, really. Among european aristocracy (in the past, at least) it wouldn't matter what direction you swung, as long as you managed to have an acceptable wife and produce an heir.

Not that I'm a fan of Lucius-slash. (I adore Snape, but something about Lucius just turns me off.)

Um... nowhere in canon was it stated that Narcissa was rat-faced. She's from a different family. In fact, she's described as tall, blonde, thin and attractive. Snooty, but attractive. And if you say, after this, that you find Sirius attractive I am going to LAUGH MY ASS OFF.

(Uh, and pardon my spooge. ;) That, however, is a low blow.)

I... don't know. In my own mind, I fly the LM/SS flag, and so part of me gets all 'yeah cool' about the thought of it being canon, but somehow I don't think I'd want to see it the way JK would probably write it if she did decide to write it. Face it, what I really want to see is fiction with intelligent, powerful, bitchy men getting it on, at least one of whom is all, like, hot 'n stuff. I don't really think that our dear, loyalty-worshipping, somewhat anti-intellectual Ms. Rowling is going to give me that. She could probably write Sirius/Remus as a plausible gay couple, if she did want to take that road -

- but I think Ms. Rowling has had her share of fundie-hate already and therefore will simply elect to Not Go There.

I think we've already been given our gay HP couple: Sirius and Remus. (Joint Christmas presents, people!) And much though my little Malfoy/Snape shipper's heart went pitter-pat when Sirius sneered and asked Snape if he was still Lucius Malfoy's lapdog, I don't think that JKR is going to go there. And frankly, I don't want her to. I want hot, kinky, complicated, violent sex between two angry, bitter men, and somehow, I don't think that she's going to be writing that any time soon.

And frankly this is one of those times where I'm glad she's not writing it. Because we (fan writers in general) do it better.

Oh my, so should I take the fact that two women at work who jointly gave me a lovely birthday present are actually a lesbian couple (despite the fact that both are married)?

I never knew.

Hey, I'm all for the Sirius/Remus lovin' (one of my fav ships actually) but joint Christmas presents do not a gay couple make.

Personally, until I read in JKR's own words that they were a couple, then I'll believe it...but until then, it's my own little fantasy (which I seem to share with many a fan) and I'll continue to read and write steamy hot Remus/Sirius slash. ;)

OK...

1. There are still two books to go, so who knows?

2. JKR obviously isn't squeamish about aknowledging the existance of homosexuality. (OotP)

3. I think Karkaroff is gay.

Personally I'm one who HATES slash. Hate it with the fire of a thousand nuns.

can't... breathe...

I think it could be argued that the whole 'Boy Who Lived in a Closet discovers strange and magical world' angle could be interpreted as a metaphor for homosexuality.

Besides, Remus and Sirius is canon. I agree with with the SS/LM shippers -- JKR couldn't do it justice.

This just makes no sense. If there was slash, it would most likely be Remus/Sirius or Seamus/Dean -- something Harry would, you know, notice and care about. Yes, Ms. Fametracker Fangirl, even if they're not hawt!!11!
