It's Anne Rice, of course she's wanking
Love her or (more likely) hate her, you can't deny that the woman is an insane egomaniac.

Witness this ramble from her website, in which she tells us how great she is, and why she doesn't require an editor. And also, all those pesky "grammar mistakes" and "continuity errors"? She meant to do that.

Here are some of the best excerpts for your enjoyment:

But the point is, I never worked in drafts. I never sat down and wrote a "first draft" of anything. I wrote only through slow and polished and highly edited evolution, discarding as I went along until --- by the very end -- I had a completed and polished and deeply thought out and, above all, deeply felt and executed manuscript. One version of that manuscript existed, and nothing more. There was never a sloppy first draft or second draft or third draft.

Only a sloppy final copy.

And though I am devoted to my editor, I always had mixed feelings about this process of receiving her comments and responding to them.

After the publication of the The Queen of the Damned, I requested of my editor that she not give me anymore comments. I resolved to hand in the manuscripts when they were finished. And asked that she accept them as they were. She was very reluctant, feeling that her input had value, but she agreed to my wishes. I asked this due to my highly critical relationship with my work and my intense evolutionary work on every sentence in the work, my feeling for the rhythm of the phrase and the unfolding of the plot and the character development. I felt that I could not bring to perfection what I saw unless I did it alone. In other words, what I had to offer had to be offered in isolation. So all novels published after The Queen of the Damned were written by me in this pure fashion, my editor thereafter functioning as my mentor and guardian.

Bolding mine for emphasis. She really takes the self-love to the next level here.

Why am I telling you? Perhaps to assure you -- those of you who might want to know -- that the writing you are reading is quite deliberate, that it is informed and it is conscious, as well as being the result of intuition. It is the result of all that I am -- my education, my mystic sensibilities, and the student in me. It is poured out fearlessly, and then edited, and re-edited, and subjected to merciless scrutiny. It represents, and always has, my finest efforts.

If these are her finest efforts...

Before I close, let me add one more note on the evolution of each novel with the publisher. After my editor receives each novel and approves of it, she passes it on to the "copy editor." The job of this person is to proof read the novel for spelling and dropped words and grammar. This person marks any kind of mistake of that sort, also some times catching simple mistakes in agreement -- say a character is six feet tall on one page, and 100 pages later, he is mentioned as shorter -- and sends the manuscript, through my editor, back to me. I then go over the whole manuscript again with a pencil and pen, reviewing all of the "copy editor's corrections." At that time, I not only approve the spelling corrrections, which I often need, and catch cropped words, but I also make corrections of my own. My editing isn't heavy at this point, but it is often very meaningful. I may even add lines or even paragraphs in ink. I read every single solitary word. I re-edit, exhaustively. Then and only then, do I return the manuscript.

Er...then she needs to find a better copy editor. And perhaps, whilst the copy editor is checking for mistakes in agreement within each book, he should try checking to make sure each new book agrees with the previous books, so that we don't end up with characters who are suddenly from a totally different country than previously stated (*cough*Pandora*cough*), or suddenly younger than they should be (*cough*Louis*cough*). If, that is, it's too much for Anne to remember basic facts about her own characters. But, you know, that's probably beneath her.

Oh yes, I'm bitter.

Unfortunately there aren't any wanky comments or anything like that as her official site doesn't have a message board, but I think Anne does a good job of wanking on her own.

Makes perfect sense. The first two books were pretty cool, and QotD had some damn great bits. Only in Tale of the Body Thief did the rot really begin to set in.

Personally, I think that if Anne Rice had even one ounce more of hot air inside her, she'd float gently towards the heavens and disappear into space.

Not that it would necessarily be a bad thing.

I love how she's not only describing drafts all the while yelling that "NO! NO! NO! They're not drafts!" but she's basically just an older, wrinklier version of the fangirls in the Den o' Voles.

... ... ... HOLY SHIT! That explains so much! Just like a MarySue creator yelling about how she'll sic evil beasties on you if you steal her characters...

I mean, take a look at this part:

I requested of my editor that she not give me anymore comments. I resolved to hand in the manuscripts when they were finished. And asked that she accept them as they were. She was very reluctant, feeling that her input had value, but she agreed to my wishes.

So basically, she's asking that her editor not offer any more constructive critique, but instead only stroke her ego and tell her what amounts to: "OMG!!!11!! U R such a g8 riter!!!111!!1 rite more plz!!11!! kthxbye!"

Now the reason why she demanded that there be no fanfic based off her works comes into crystal clarity. Anne Rice is to the Den o' Vole MarySue writers what Neanderthals are to the human race.

I've never read anything by Rice, but I'm struck by how much this post resembles assorted anti-beta reader rants. I almost expect her to excuse errors by saying that she only writes for the fun of it, or that she's only semi-educated, and will you picky readers get off her case! If you don't like it, then don't read it!

I give her points for the eloquent way that she presents her case; her "deeply felt and executed manuscript" is obviously of High Spiritual Importance, brought to "perfection" in "isolation." In other words, nuts to the readers, this is all about the Arteest and her Art.

Polished and highly edited is what I think of when I think of Anne Rice. I threw Memnoch the Devil against the wall halfway through and haven't looked at her blatherings since.

My god, the woman is batshit. It's not like her editor - a professional, not a random fangirl - doesn't have a vested interest in the quality of her work.

And Tale of the Body Thief should have been a fucking short story.

"I simply can't live without my editor! Especially after I forbade her from actually giving me constructive criticism!"

Unfortunately, that poor editor is stuck between a rock and a hard place. While it's really not in her best interests to let Rice churn out utter and total crap, she can't just tell her to sit on her thumb and rotate, or else she'll (likely) pack up and take her best-selling franchise elsewhere.

No matter how good a writer you are, a decent proof-reader who's not afraid to give you criticism is more valuble than you know. Even when you're at the point in your career (if you're lucky enough to be able to write professionally) where you could shit on a napkin and call it a "vampyre trilogye", you'd probably want to avoid pissing off the fans and getting a reputation for being a prima-donna, at the very least, right?

Unbelievable. What makes this so awe-inspiringly stupid is that -- while what they say often hurts -- still, to any serious writer a good editor is a prize above rubies. A good editor is like a good hairdresser; they make you look even better than you are. It takes a very special and specific kind of talent to edit well. I was lucky enough to have a really good editor once, and pretty much everything I know about the skill of writing came from his help and advice. You can learn tremendous amounts by listening to a good editor giving an honest opinion of your work. Anne Rice refuses to be edited, and it shows.

Caaaaaats! My hero! *glomps icon*
Can I use that? =^_^=

Y'know, I'm personally against the draft-writing theory that they tend to teach in schools... I've never done more than *tweaked* between "drafts" to make things flow better. But I'm also very much aware that the one-draft method of writing really doesn't work for everyone, and that some people really do work with multiple drafts... I just find that confusing. I go through once, then go back and see if I need to fix anythihng (rarely is anything changed)... and *then* I get someone else to check to see if I've missed anything obvious (like repeated paragraphs, spelling, you know). That's what beta-readers/editors/proof-readers are for at the very least, right? Even if you work with just one draft, they're a great help. Even in computer coding and other tech occupations, that second pair of eyes is considered a valuable resource...

But then, I've had it explained to me by people who I don't know online that Anne Rice was upset by fan fiction of her work that made her work look crappy, and *that's* why it's not allowed to make fanfic of her stuff available... I think I find that utterly believable...

-Starherd, proud to be Anne Rice Free (and at this rate will remain so)

Writes by intuition, does she? Maybe she also writes with a blindfold and mittens on.

After the publication of the The Queen of the Damned, I requested of my editor that she not give me anymore comments.

This comes as no surprise. QOTD was her last good book. The Witching Hour was passable, and then - it all went straight to hell.

Her poor editor. All the other editors laugh at her behind her back.

my editor thereafter functioning as my mentor and guardian.

Obviously, not as the guardian of her work from her own ego.

And while I don't necessarily do entirely separate drafts of a paper, either, I sure don't write a few words, then go back and look at them and nod solemnly and decide it's good enough. It's a wonder she ever gets anything finished, if...

Oh, wait. Looking and nodding solemnly doesn't take much time. Actually reading through it and editing it, now that would take work.

That makes me want to see what her editor can come up without the old bag holding her back.

the writing you are reading is quite deliberate,

*twitches*

And the flow of that sentence? And the fact that it's deliberate, I don't know about you, scares the hell out of me. She writes like Tolkein. Too. Many. Words.

Remember Orwell? Why use a long word when three short ones will do? She's not an artist, she's a primadonna.

After my editor receives each novel and approves of it, she passes it on to the "copy editor."

followed by

I then go over the whole manuscript again with a pencil and pen, reviewing all of the "copy editor's corrections."

...the hell? "Copy editor," in quotation marks? Somebody's been practicing her Dr. Evil impression, I see. Mini-Rice, stop humping the "copy editor" already, please.

She's the Queen of the Wanks, no doubt. All done by herself!

It is the result of all that I am -- my education, my mystic sensibilities, and the student in me. Hallelujah!

I feel sorry for her editor though.

I am also very much in love with the music on her splash page. Someone buy me Violin for Anne Rice now (or just kill me)

Gah, crap on a stick, that explains fucking everything! In all my years, I have never read anything that is as truly, desperately, painfully pretentious and verbose to the point of making me reach for my special gouging spork as Anne Rice's novels. And I read freaking Hugo for fun!

you can't deny that the woman is an insane egomaniac

*COUGHeletroshocktherapyCOUGH*

Not that I used to have friends in NO who could access her medical records. [innocent whistle]

I had a completed and polished and deeply thought out and, above all, deeply felt and executed manuscript.

A who in the what now? Do we even bother trying to explain how those words have no meaning in that order?

Man, it's almost enough to make me miss Ayn Brice. But OTOH Anne's too damned hard to parody. The reality is absurd enough as it is.
