Dragonriders of Pern wank
Hi, obligatory mouthings about first post, many thanks to amasaglajax for giving me a code, etc., etc.

This wank is a couple of weeks old, but it's still a good one, and it's guaranteed to flare back up again. I was hesitant to post it because Pern fandom has a few solid decades of wank behind it, and there's no way I can adequately sum up to the uninitiated just how much spooge has been flung around this fandom.

Why am I still in it? First, I like to think that I inhabit the mostly sane corner, and second, there's an unending supply of dancing monkeys to entertain me.

A quick run-down of some of the points that make Pern the hellhole that it is:

1.) The wank starts at the top. The author (and since she's getting old, her children are stepping up to bat) insists on overseeing fannish activities to make sure they're doing it right. I think everyone can appreciate what this leads to.

2.) Many fans use religious terms to discuss the author, her "inner circle," and her writings. There's a scary cultish streak here.

3.) The books themselves started out as moderatively imaginative romance novels with an interesting but under-explored fantasy/psuedo-scientific setting and rapidly went downhill.

4.) The author in her position as cult leader has made some rather ... interesting unscientific, unPC statements that are still getting debated Because Anne Said So (I swear to god that BASS is an acronym in common use), which means it must be true. A famous example: getting fucked up the ass once makes you smell gay. FOREVER. And not just gay, girly-gay. Moving on ...

5.) This is the most pertinent one for this wank. Merchandise and multimedia tie-ins for Pern have been handled abysmally, forever. The author has a history of pitching fits at people who "do things wrong," thereby sinking many a project, and those that have been completed have pretty much blown. (The suck that is the Pern Dreamcast game ...) A few years ago, a deal was made to make a Pern television series for the WB. That fizzled pretty much at the eleventh hour for reasons that I don't fully understand and don't have time to go into. Since then, the fans, especially the psycho cultists among them, have latched on like pitbulls to the idea of a Pern movie. That is where our wank opens.

EDIT: I wrote this in a hurry before a class, accidentally posted it in my journal instead of here, and just now posted it here without elaborating on stuff I could elaborate on. So. The t.v. series. I don't remember everything that happened; like I said, it was a few years ago. The series was being funded by the WB and directed by Ron Moore of Star Trek TNG and DS9 fame. Supposedly, the set was built, the cast and crew was hired, everything was ready, and then Moore pulled the plug the day before filming was to start because of artistic differences among his vision, McCaffrey's vision, and the WB's vision-- mostly the WB's. Supposedly. I've heard explanations ranging from "The WB was insisting it be like Xena and Moore wouldn't go for it" to "McCaffrey threw a fit because they weren't doing it right." That project had been bounced from studio to studio for a few years prior, too, so it was probably a big combination of things.

http://forum.annemccaffrey.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12849

Alec is Anne McCaffrey's oldest son and business manager. In what I assume is an attempt to demonstrate to potential buyers that there is a significant fanbase which will see a movie, he asks for people to write posts addressed at a theoretical producer.

Watch fans make demands. We can't have any old producer or director on this-- we must have QUENTIN TARANTINO.

Watch fans insist that the half-senile author who changes her canon with every book be the ultimate word on everything.

Watch fans promise to harass the director who should dare to "do it wrong."

Watch Nefret invoke one of the Endless Wanks of Pern, the question of dragon colors and human genders.

Watch Anareth say something sensible that most people don't get.

Watch mikesdragon bring in an argument about an unrelated lawsuit (which deserves a wank thread of its own, probably) for the sole purpose of adding to the wank.

It's a circus, and it's free!

First... please go into the reasons for the TV series? Please? n.n
Second, if I was a studio and looked at what came of the topic, I'd be like "Uh... huh. I think I'll just pass on this project, thanks."

What the what now? Explanations, please!!

Is it awful that my mind went immediately to the Domlijah?

... I might break my personal no-RPS rule long enough to read it. God I'm weak.

Anyhow, it's a combination of this section of an interview transcript between Anne McCaffrey and somebody (the full transcript has been pretty systematically removed from the 'net-- I wonder why):

"A: The situation will arise where two males will enagage in
sexual activity. Greenriders, have to be homosexual.

Q: Some fandom Weyrs choose to seperate sexual tendencies
and flight related sex experiences...

A: Let me stop you right there, there is no seperation.
Two men engaging in sexual activity with one another are
gay. The dragons choose based on their own drives.

Q: *audible pause* *sounds of paper rustling* But, uh,
some people say one experience, especially under the
control of outside forces dosen't really make you
*emphasis* gay.

A: It's not a matter of the rider *emphasis* becoming
homosexual. Green and blue dragons choose people who are
already homosexual. And even if circumstances arose, and
a green dragon chose a heterosexual lifemate... Well, he
would become homosexual. It's a proven fact that a single
anal sex experience causes one to be homosexual. The
hormones released by a sexual situation involving the
anus being broached, are the same hormones found in large
quantities in effeminate homosexual males. For example,
when I was much younger I knew a young man who was
for all intents and purposes, heterosexual. He was mugged,
and involved in a rape situation involving a tent peg.
This one event was enough to have him start on a road that
eventually led to him becoming effeminate and gay.

Q: *another pause* In regards to holders, how many people
actually lived in the hold proper, and how many in outlying
communities?"

And this letter, issued to fan clubs around 1997, when there was a huge kerfuffle involving dragon and human gender-sexuality matches.

The scientist she mentions as backing up her theory, by the way, is an expert in designing alien puppets for science fiction movies.

Yeah.

Of course, if they get stuck, they would just post a thread here where it could be debated until a consensus was reached.

Can you imagine???!!!???? Although, if the thought had occured to people, I am sure that there are plenty in the HP fandom who would be demanding something similar. Don't slick back Draco's hair!!111 OMGWTF, Muggle clothes?!11??

No, make the dragons look realistic - make the movie a visual treat! And remember, no scales, neck ridges, five claws on the forelegs.....

Because people will boycott the film if they get the number of claws
wrong!!!!

Dear Director,

You poor man/woman. Whatever you do, don't panic. Be aware that you are going to get raked over the coals by the fans, so accept that now and move on. (Even Peter Jackson gets blasted by some for Lord of the Rings, when he was I think more than generous with that overlong travelogue of a source material.)

I think I want to have Anareth's Rider's babies. SANITY!!!

*dies*

I am soooo glad that the internet was not what it is today when I was into Pern. I had no clue there was a fandom back then. Thank god. The world was spared my inevitable Mary Sue, Warrior Princess Brown rider. I posted a few times a while back on the KT, but... no, could not deal. I was in the Trek fandom at the time and one totally wanktastic fandom was enough for me. Although, I have some how managed to get my self involved in Harry Potter. I'll never learn...

God, it's been a long time since I read that thread. Why do I post there? Why, God, why? Oh, right, because at times "whack-a-moron" is theapeutic.

My mom really likes Pern, it was one of her favorite series back in the day. Whenever someone reports Pern wank I'm tempted to send her a link so she can laugh at the idiots. Then I think, "No, maybe I wouldn't ruin her child/young-adult-hood today."

Incidentally, maybe I'd have been more interested in reading the books myself if my mom had mentioned all the gay subtext.

Don't bother. There's one decent gay character in the entire series, and he's only in one book. The rest are something out of the worst kind of homophobic slash.

Ooooh boy.

I loved Dragonflight. I still love Dragonflight. I adore Lessa and Ramoth, and, damn it, I spent far too much money and far too much time buying the other books so I could read more about them. Instead, I got Brekke. And *spit* Jaxom. And Menolly and Sharra and so many more aggravating "beloved" characters.

Not that I'm bitter, or anything. ;)

Now that I've gotten off my chest, I gotta say...tentpoles? Coincidentally enough, I just finished blasting a fanfic author for buying into that whole "one anal experience makes you gaygaygay!" stuff. And now that I think about it, "anal experience" is a very good word for the whole thing.

Now I feel the need to get all of these books out of the public library to read and laugh and experience the wank more in-depth. See! Fandom_Wank. Bringing psuedoculture to YOU!

Do you figure the librarian will realize what's going on when I walk up there with this big stack of Anne novels if I just grin vacantly and wear a Star Wars t-shirt?

Opinion on Anne McCaffrey books: Harper Hall trilogy and Dragonflight trilogy are good starter books for fanlings, but you grow up, you get the dragonrider mary-sues out of your system, you move on, and once you get into fandom... you come to realize that they Ain't That Great.

I feel better, having gotten that out of my system.

You know, I've always loved the Pern series.

Despite all the wankiness.

And maybe I'm fucked in the head, but I always knew about those pesky male riders. I guess that explains a lot about me now! :D

To me the Pern series is just fodder reading. Something you can read without even having to thing abour it... like Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean series... Light reading... but hella amusing for the wanks! :D

I was wondering what happened to the tv series, since I vaguely remember visiting a website that had something like an animated trailer for it and I couldn't get my computer to play the thing since I was on dial-up, but the character/dragon designs were cool.

Oh Anne, how you have fallen. I think I finally got totally turned off when she recycled her short stories for new novels, i.e. the Freedom series. I used to be such a big fangirl, to the point that I actually visited her at her home in Ireland 10+ years ago. Now I don't even bother to look at her new releases, and haven't been for at least five years.

Oh, yeah. The gay dragon riders, I remember those. I also remember only liking Lessa and a few of the background characters; and that The Skies of Pern sucked the big one.

Merchandise and multimedia tie-ins for Pern have been handled abysmally, forever.

Hell yes. Back in the day when I was actually in Pern fandom, there was a plushie artist who was selling gorgeous firelizard plushies. However, they SOMEHOW didn't meet with approval (magically, after two months!) and she got smacked down.

I have no idea why they weren't cool. I got a hatchling-size, gold, and it's a beautiful piece. Just another example of WTF, I suppose.

At least when I was in fandom, I had the fortune to be in a PBEM RPG that was seriously awesome and not wanky. The second one, anyway. The FIRST Weyr (a variant on Ista, blah blah) was teh frigging suck. But the Fort Weyr RPG I ended up in seriously kicked ass. I hope that game is still going...

Speaking of Pern multimedia tie-ins...did anyone ever read a book called something like the Bank Street Collection of Fantasy [or Sc-Fi or Horror, there were several]? They were short stories made into comic book form. The Smallest Dragonboy was one of them. I don't know how much say Queen Anne had in it, since the character drawings and such were not up tothe usual anally exact specifications, but it was cool, damn cool. Especially for that fact, really, because it meant you got to see a different sort of vision of Pern.

[And really, the dragons there looked a hell of a lot better than the fugly 'correct' ones in The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern. T_T]

So yeah. Annie is wanky.
