Well, in case you haven't heard yet, the runaway freight train of domlijah just met the concrete wall of reality.

The fine folks over at [info]dl_anon are having a field day sorting through the smoking wreckage, which includes some true gems of wank. Apparently the fangirls are concluding that these poor boys have nothing better to do than mess with their fans' minds by pretending to be gay.

Consider where that's coming from, if you will.

:-) You know it's a quality tinhat wank when it gets reposted here. MsA desperately trying to spin this has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

There's a lot more wank than just that one post, btw. Check out the DL_anon front page - many quotes from DLR and DL. Funnier than a penguin playing a banjo.

Oh man. That's just beautiful. However . . .

For those of us who don't keep up with LoTrips fandom . . . what exactly happened? *curious, curious* What "comments" were made?

Dom was on some talk show, the subject came up, and he said that he and Elijah had heard about the little phenomenon, thought it was funny, and had considered holding hands at the RotK premiere just to egg them on but decided against it.

Whoops, no, it wasn't a talk show.

It was during Dom, Elijah and Sean Astin's appearances at Collectormania this weekend. According to people at the con, during their Q&A sessions, both Dom and Elijah brought up the rumors. Dom seems to have made a joke out of the whole thing, while apparently Elijah listed off a few key rumors and said flat-out that none of them were true.

Oww. Oww. Oww. Too much ass-tardity for me to process at once...WOE UNTO MY POOR, POOR BRAIN.

*crispy-fried wankdom sense*

Why do people care whether the stoned-looking hobbit is shagging the blond hobbit in between takes? Regardless of whether they are or not, they're not shagging you, and if nobody's shagging you, what's the point in equivocating one way or the other? It's a bit like arguing over the pronunciation of "potato," ain't it?

Got to say - this made me laugh out loud.

I must have missed the whole Domlijah thing. Because I'm still at the 'Wha..?' stage. So watching folk take it oh-so-seriously is good for a snigger or two.

The lads can do as they please for all I care (isn't that nice? I've given them permission...very good of me, I must say) but I wish they had held hands for a wind-up. It would have been good for a laugh.

Check out Sanity, Please for a closer look at the madness. It's a bit out of date, unfortunately - the tinhats are remarkably skilled at doublethink, and they changed a good deal of their canon without batting an eyelash afer the site went up, and pulled down the database and FAQ that "proved" Dom and Elijah were fucking (and which SP pretty much definitively showed to be full of shit) within two weeks of the site going up. But it's still an easy, comprehensive way to find out about the tinhats.

but I wish they had held hands

They did, as a matter of fact, coming out of the SAG awards in 2002. This is a major, major part of the "proof" that they're fucking each other, even though the woman who took the picture has stated that they left with two women, one of whom Dom was making with at one point, and is very upset that her picture is being used out of context.

I agree wholeheartedly. I think part of it is an OTP gone terribly wrong, part of it is MsA's utter vehemence on the subject and most of it is that these people have the deluded impression that they're HELPING the guys. It brings them closer to their favorite celebrities if they think that Dom and Elijah rely on them understanding the secret code in Dom wearing a Purdue shirt and so on.

Instead of them seeing it as a vulgar invasion of privacy to speculate on their private lives, they feel that Dom and Elijah should be grateful for them showing their support to the cause. There is no evidence to show that if those two WERE in a relationship that they would even want anyone to know. Elijah himself has talked about how sacred his private life is. So why oh why would he be spearheading this kind of mission?

Okay, potentially stupid question, but what is "OTP"? I've seen it dozens of times on many LJs, and I've yet to figure out what it is from context clues. Is everyone supposed to automatically know what it means, and I just happened to miss the memo? Just wondering.

Because apparently all gay men are pretty, angsty waifs that need a bunch of crazy fangirls to support their tru, pure *luv,* lest they curl up and die. Are you hearing me out on this one, Houie?

Hee!

Tangent:
You know, being mostly in fictional fandoms myself, not actor-based stuff and the like, sometimes I envy people in RPSey/real-life-ey fandoms, because there IS a final word. I think, "Oh, how I wish people would stop bickering about OTPs and OMG u cant see teihr tru luv!! and just understand the difference between canon and fantasy." You can't get this in fictional fandom, generally, unless someone pipes up to the author/artist/etc. about it.

Now I see that this actually doesn't work even in reality-based fandoms. As mentioned more entertainingly in that thread, a person could get "HI. MY NAME IS ____ AND I AM OF THE [hetero/homo/bi]SEXUAL PERSUASION. HAVE A NICE DAY" tattooed on their forehead and still, STILL people would believe whatever they want.

Very, very strange.

It's like the fall of Rome! It's like all those grand temples, overwrought houses, and fanciful statues burning and crumbling to the ground before our very eyes! My dear friends, we are witnessing the end of an era. The Era of the DomLijah Tinhat. Other tinhats will rise, other pairings will wankify, but until they do, we stand with the ruins of DLR beneath our feet. I volunteer to be Nero. We can pave DLR over, and I'll play the fiddle madly while it sinks into the sea of fandom, and we can dance on the new-salted earth. Any takers?

I think people are making too much of this. Sure, the Cult of Domlijah might lose a few members, but everything that happened at Collectormania will get spun into tinhat canon, and things will carry on pretty much as they did before. The PR devils made them do it, or it's really a coded message to the fans, or just flat out rewriting of what happened, or all of the above.

Suggesting this is the end of the Domlijah insanity, as some people have done, is like suggesting suckers will stop sending money to TV evangelists just because yet another one got caught high on coke and fucking bikini models. True believers' ability to delude themselves is stronger than pretty much anything except gravity.
