So, over on the SP community, we have a comic in where Davin and his current girlfriend discuss foreskin.

Things were doomed from the begining. Megarandom, among others consider it to be child abuse. Others take offense to this. Wank ensues until Randy lays the smack down.

Not much, but what's there is intresting.

I suppose "Well I have an un-cut friend and he says..." is like "Well I have a gay friend and he says..."

Y'know, I don't exactly miss my foreskin. I think Dave Barry had a column about the people who were outraged at getting circumcised, and the general tone was "What the crap?"

Yeah, and then they'd attach weights to the skin of their penises (penii?) to try to stretch it out to simulate a foreskin. Dude, that made my dick hurt and I don't even have one. (Phantom penis!)

Seriously, someone who's embittered and traumatized by the loss of his foreskin has much bigger problems than the loss of his foreskin.

When I went to D.C. 'bout six years ago, there was a group of no more than five men protesting in front of the White House. They wanted the government to outlaw circumcisions.

It all makes so much more sense now.

Yeah, that cracked me up. Five guys! They care!

Way I see it: If the majority of American men believed circumcision to be a "barbaric", "abusive" practice, you can bet your ass it'd already be outlawed. This is, after all, the country wherein Viagra is covered by health insurance.

But not birth control!

If nothing else, you'd be damn sure they wouldn't allow to happen to their sons. So there'd be no current circumcision goin' on...

Reminds me of that subplot in Nip/Tuck wherein the son (played by the uber-adorable John Hensley) wishes he was circumcised, but his father refuses to do it for him, so he decides to circumcise himself. Brilliant!

Since I don't, myself, HAVE a dick, when I found out my 2nd kid was going to be a boy, I researched this whole circumcision lark thoroughly, much as I did for silver nitrate eyedrops and epesiotomies and all the other whatnot they do in US hospital births. I just didn't know, but I wanted to know.

Turns out that baby boys actually die each year in the US from circumscision-related complications. And there are instances of 'accidental' severing of the penis completely. On top of that, they strap the poor little dude down and do it without anaesthesia, by crushing it off. OW! I'm telling you what OW!

So, yeah. Needless to say, my son is not circumcised. Now I think guys who seize on circumcision as their one THING to complain about need to seriously get a life. But it is, imo, a valid issue going forth for parents to consider.

Personally, unless it's done for religious reasons, I don't think parents should do anything of the body modification sort to their babies' bodies. Not just circumcision, but ear piercing and so on.

Yeah. To me nothing is sadder than a tiny infant in a frilly dress with freshly pierced ears and little diamond studs.

I quite agree! This sounds like my husband, who is very anti-circumcision and who will start rambling on about it as soon as the subject is even mentioned. Fortunately, circumcision, other than for religious reasons, isn't as popular in South Africa here as it is appears to be the US, so it wasn't even an issue when our son was born.

It's some weird leftover Victorian thing following on these lines: masturbation is EVIL, foreskins make masturbation much more pleasurable and the penis more 'excitable', so if you take away the foreskin, you take away the impulse. *snort* And of course, as a corollary to this, since foreskins play a part in heightening sexuality, they must be DIRTY. So it's all nice and hygenic and such to just get rid of it.

Ah, my Puritanical culture.

Amen. I ended up with two girls but i made sure to thoroughly research circumcision myself just in case. No way i'm putting a newborn through that kind of trauma for unproven health benefits.

Now I think guys who seize on circumcision as their one THING to complain about need to seriously get a life.

Absolutely. And some of these people are freaking OBSESSED. Check out most parenting communities and you'll find the debate raging on, with extremists on both sides.

But it is, imo, a valid issue going forth for parents to consider.

Uh huh. I thoroughly encourage people having kids to actually RESEARCH and make an informed decision, not just decide on the basis of, 'i want him to look like daddy' or 'i don't want kids to make fun of him in the locker room', or the ever popular 'i don't want his future girlfriend/wife to be disgusted'. They're NOT valid reasons for putting your infant through that, in my opinion.

And frankly if daddy is that upset about his kid's penis not being the same as his, he has some issues to work out.

[nods] Yeah, I know. That's why, even though I'm going to circumscise my son(s) I'm going to do get a professional moyl (sp?) and do a big background check on it. I'm also going to see how I can make the operation as painless as possible.

What's really funny is that the number of non-religious circumcisions is going down in the US...

::giggles:: Megarandom's amusing...in a MsA sort of way.

Elsewhere on the post, not related to this wank, but still related to wank in other definitions of the word... ::snerks:: we have some real gems.

like this: "Jewish, but hung like a stallion ~_^ oh yeah."

this: "there is a local support group for sex addicts like you and i, they are called brothels"

and this entire thread in general.

Oy this reminds me of one of the 'foreskin' debates I got into once. I gave up halfway because the other guy was just hellishly obsessed about how he was 'wronged' by being circumcised.

It made me decide that in the unlikely event of me having a son I'd get him circumcised just to piss these people off.

On the other hand, we were all set to get our kid circumcised (should it actually be male), until we watched the very graphic video on circumcision in the infant care class. My husband turned rather green and changed his mind (fine by me, so long as *he* teaches the kid about cleaning an'nat...).

ugh. There was a documentary about female ircumsicion on channel four a few months back. I spent about five minutes with my legs crossed wincing at the TV before I had to turn it off *shudder* It's even made thinking about male circumcision squicky for me.

I personally think infant circumcision is barbaric and completely unnecessary. It's cosmetic body modification on an infant. Let the kid grow up and decide how he wants his own dick for himself. While I am sure most circumisized me are fine as adults with their status, not all of them are. It's a painful procedure and there are complications (some of them ghastly). The US is the only place in the world this is routinely performed for non-religious reasons. The rates are dropping though, thank goodness.

Actually, this came up in one of my classes -- an Honors seminar (read: class attempting to be interdiciplinary and all and kinda a check to make sure all the geeks can write literately) I'm in in called "Imagination in Medicine" and one group did a project on cosmetic surgery. For some reason, the focused on circumcision. The things I got from it:
Apparently the ancient Romans had a way of decircumcising men -- but it looked pretty painful and given what we learned about surgery back then, I would think , were I male, I would rather stay away from anyone with a scalpel, no matter what the other men said in the bathhouse.
Celnliness actually was an issue back in the Middle Ages, when people didn't bathe because they though that would give them the flu. Nowadays, not so much.
It IS possible to link circumsicion to Furries in only a few steps. Considering all most people knew about furries was a Discovery Channel special on a while back, our teachers tried to steer us back onto topic.
College students love to BS about anything in class, as it doens't seem like actual work.
