5:06am: The Great Circle of Wank
Way back when, a few folks started a spinoff of this lovely community, for the specific purpose of centralizing the DataLounge Domlijah wank. [info]dl_anon was born. Unfortunately, some new arrivals didn't read their introductory packets, so the were under the impression that the community was for something other than pointing and laughing.

After saveelijah posted about a rumor that poor Jesus Elijah was ill, the post was deleted, since [info]dl_anon is not, in fact, an Elijah fangirl community. This set off a veritable cascade of wank:

"Our posts about Elijah having surgery were deleted? Why?!?!"

"You are all cold, unfeeling perverts!"

"When you stop caring about someone who has brought so much good and joy into people's lives as Elijah has you stop being human beings."

and finally:

Ms A stunk and it seems this place stinks just as bad!

There's also a bit of collateral wank here, as [info]elvishhobbit feels the need to tell all of the slashers (like the ones who started [info]dl_anon) how self-loathing we are for writing about boy boinking.

And so, like the swallows to Capistrano, so does the wank return and descend upon [info]dl_anon, the community born of [info]fandom_wank. The beauty of nature--it brings a tear to my eye. Look closely; it's there.

We now turn to that king of crossover wankage, the Smallville fandom.

So. A couple of weeks ago, FOX debuted a new teen soap opera called The O.C.. Let me reiterate that. This show has only aired two episodes.

I, for one, thought it was a lot of fun with lots of likeable and/or intriguing characters, and started babbling about it on my LJ like I do about everything else. Apparently I was not alone in the SV fandom... Apparently a lot of other Smallville fen were really grooving on the show and posting about it simultaneously. Some of us made what we thought were some fairly innocuous comparisons between The O.C.'s female leads and those of Smallville. Some of us drew some, uh, not so innocuous comparisons.

Keep in mind, this fandom is only ten days old. (Thanks to [info]deeablo for the right airdates there.)

It didn't take long for Smallville fans to start wondering WTF was the big deal, but it didn't stop there. Oh, no. Suddenly it's a free for all, where everybody and their mamas gets their bitch on, though I think this one deserves an extra special prize.

Suddenly, everybody's all "You OC folks are, IMHO, totally overreacting" and also all "WTF is wrong with you people? IT'S SUMMER! There's nothing else on to watch!"

Personally, I think it's just a matter of some people meanly failing to take into account how very sensitive and precious some Smallville fans are (especially in the comments! Dayum!) (ETA: Dangit, someone deleted one of the posts. Didn't save that one, but I did save everybody else's!). Or (hee!) maybe not!

And the lesson of the day is, if you're sick to death of everybody talking about The New Black, maybe the best way to encourage that is NOT to... uh... rant about The New Black. Just a hunch, there.

ETA: I am eversoshocked at who chimed in! I love it.

I forgot to mention that I posted a request for wanky links regarding this kerfuffle on my LJ, for the sole purpose of entertaining you fine folks, and the posts I posted here were the result of eight people responding with links. Communal wank, people, it's a beautiful thing.

You'd think that an instance of plagiarism where the original author's email is still attached to the fic would be a cut and dried case, right?

Not if you're these folks, it's not.
