8:27am: Racism: It's Wank for Every Fan!
This past weekend, a popular soccer player decided to spend a day off by attending the game of two other teams. This is not an uncommon occurrence; players tend to be fans themselves, and are frequently buddies with players on other squads in the same league. As he left the stadium after the game, he and his girlfriend were surrounded and attacked, and the attacks pretty quickly started to involve racist comments, because as luck would have it, the player in question is Oguchi Onyewu (see user icon), a fellow from Maryland of Nigerian parentage. Meanwhile, stadium security couldn't be bothered to intervene.

Creepy stuff, eh? No question. But because this involves racist comments directed at an American in Europe, discussion of the incident quickly goes straight to hell, moving from "wow, that sucks" to "who are more racist, Americans or Europeans." I should point out that racist behavior among fans in Europe is a hot topic lately, because sadly there have been some all too recent examples of people who can't get over the fact that sports are played and enjoyed by every ethnic group, but it's also far from a weekly feature across the continent. At any rate, the discussion involves all the greatest hits you'd expect from an ill-moderated discussion about racism--semantics, Nazis, hate crimes, segregation, and good ol' US vs. Europe dickwaving.

Personally, I'm just having a hard time deciding which was dumber: a mob attack throwing racist epithets, or the decision to attack a player whose on-field reputation is "huge mean motherfucker."

edit: The thread's been closed, but not deleted, a new one's been posted, and all of you wondering who this guy is and where can you see more of him should take note that he'll be one of the defenders on the US squad in the World Cup in June.

12:40pm: POPPY Z BRITE IS NOT OKAY!
Gacked from a helpful anonymouse on [info]wank_report.

Poppy Z. Brite didn't like Carlos Mencia's jokes about New Orleans(video clip), that a friend of hers thought was funny. So she wrote an LJ post entitled Fuck You, Carlos Mencia!, and encouraged people to voice their displeasure to Comedy Central. Here is her letter to Comedy Central.

The friend who recommended the clip in the first place explained himself and asked if she was ok. She wrote back a long angry email that she wasn't ok. Then she posted the emails publicly in Hilarity in New Orleans. (This is where the really wanky bits are, including "For what it's worth, I know you care for me and I believe you meant no harm by this. But I'm honestly not sure I can get past it.")

And today she's writing more about how New Orleans and Poppy Z. Brite are Not Okay. Her fans are commenting here.
10:51pm: On the planet you come from, this may be discussion, I admit. On my planet, it's wank.
Pointed to me by my roommate:

So, some girl post to BRPS saying that "Harry Potter journal based roleplaying = bad rping"

A lot of people disagree, saying "If that's your preference, cool, but it's not BAD." People make good and bad points on both sides.

She says everyone's wrong. Snarkily. Particularly when they have good points. And when people get snarky back, she whines about being "flame baited."

She demands logical explainations and when given them complains that it's not enough (Because, you know, everything make perfect, logical sense in Harry Potter, and nothing is excused as "magic") because Wizards have no REAL reason to keep and develop journals. Like most of us do?

And appear to have a sock puppet named tabari_avaren, or maybe just some one who follows her around being her yes person. I'm not sure.

I think raisplace summarizes everything nicely.
