11:07am: Pirates of the Caribbean Wank
[info]angua9, author of several TL;DR 'essays' on why Ron/Hermione R ment 2 B, wonders why POTC II grossed so much money.

The Jack/Elizabeth shippers credit the "chemistry" of the scenes with Jack and Elizabeth for Dead Man's Chest grossing much higher than Curse of the Black Pearl, and I think they have a point. To a certain extent, PotC 2 has benefited from the legendary "Titanic effect," where obsessed romantics go to see the movie again and again to get their erotic buzz.

So far so sane. But [info]angua9 continues:

Why the J/E Shippers Scare Me
But back to the J/E shippers: I sense a situation building that may be second only to Harry Potter Book Six in the category of tumultuous shipper explosions. The J/E shippers may not be that big a percentage of the viewing audience (25% if this imdb poll can be considered representative), but some of them are hardcore.

The combination of deep emotional attachment to a pairing and well-founded anxiety over whether that pairing will actually prevail has had its usual effect. The fanatic Jack/Elizabeth shippers are, to put it bluntly, insane.

But I am not judging, not really... )
11:57am: Comics, linkblogging, and WTFery
Okay, here's the deal.

James Meeley has a comics blog, in which he posts his various opinions, as comics bloggers are wont to do. When Fangirls Attack is a linkblog which cites articles that are relevant to the issue of women in the comics industry (as characters, creators, fans, etc.) Meeley's Blog gets linked there (it's the very last article on that page.) It also gets linked in Blog@Newsarama's Meanwhile column (don't look for the link, it's been pulled), which happens to be by Melissa Krause, aka Kalinara, who also compiles WFA with fellow blogger Ragnell.

Meeley responds as follows:

Meeley is not pleased. )

Kalinara deletes the link from Meanwhile, because she doesn't want to kick up a fuss there, but it stays at WFA, and Ragnell points Meeley to the now-updated-because-of-this linking policy. (Meaning, they link everyone.)

This is not enough. )

And it keeps going. Meeley continues to protest his publicly viewable blog posts being made more public, or something, and the rest of the commenters, and much of the surrounding comics blogosphere, tell him to STFU. (I'm linking to Chris's ISB post on the matter because he pretty much links all the major responses, and I'd just be poaching from him anyway.)

Highlights include Meeley's explanation for why he doesn't want these particular bloggers blogging him: my "problem" is that two women who have professed hatred for me and made every effort to tell me "go away" are now invading MY space and have no intention of stopping, if it suits their own whims. Perhaps that isn't a big deal for you. It is for me, however. Kalinara denies any hatred, and to date there have been no citations for whatever the hell this is supposed to be referring to, so .

But there's also the following:

And these are all from ONE COMMENT! )

About the last bit, Tom Foss points out:

Err, no. )

It's also pointed out that things like LJ's friends-locking help with the "uninvited guests" problem. ShellyS handles most of that. Tom Foss, again, probably has the best comment:

You got a little irony on your chin... )

Most of the comics blogosphere follows suit. I would kill for this kind of exposure. Hint.

There's wank on the Blog@Newsarama comment page, but it's not quite as juicy. Apologies if this all comes across as sort of one-sided, but... dude, LOOK at it.

ETA: The source of the feud has been located! (I need to read Wank Report more often.) Does it help him any? Take a guess.

And Guess who's been in a similar situation! Ragnell/Morchades' LJ has some word on her and the recent kerfluffle.

ETA 2: And he's bahleeted his comments from WFA and ISB AND taken down his blog! I think I got most of the good stuff, but did anyone get caps?
5:25pm: Minor Penny and Aggie Webcomic Kerfluffle
Penny and Aggie is a webcomic that updates Monday, Wensday, and Friday. It deals with teen issues in highschool between the popular and unpopular crowd and is a pretty good read. A recent string of strips deal with the issue of teen sex and Wensday's strip is left on a cliffhanger.

Wank occurs in the forums containing cries of double standards, stereotypes, teen sex, who should be blamed and sexual preference with a side dish of propper bathroom manners. It's died down a bit, but as the potential to ignite once more.

Contains Spoilers )
11:40pm: Pseudointellectual HP wank
In hp_essays, of all places.

Anyway, darkthirty wants us all to know that the discourse in HP is not up to his lofty standards.

The OP )

Boils down to "Waah, people aren't writing what I want them to write! PS, everything you like sucks." Unsurprisingly, people take offense to the digs at Harry and the Potters, POTCII, and Melissa and Emerson. What they don't realize is that they're taking offense because they're poopyheads, as darkthirty makes sure to inform them.

Some of the better exchanges:

POTCII objectively sucks!

"Dude, this is a rant, not an essay." "Is not!"

The only meaningful discourse is in conventions! Every online HP meta community is banal and insipid.

"You only disgree with me because I insulted your favorite things." "Actually, I don't like any of the things you insulted." (Whoops!)

Don't miss the appearance by our favorite TMI queen. Apparently the secret cabal ruling HP has forced the intelligent criticism underground. Vive la revolution!

Dunno about you, but I'm amused.

ETA: Deleted, by the mods. You may think they deleted it because it was a rant thinly disguised as an essay, or because of the wank, but darkthirty knows the real reason: because the mods don't like people dissing Emerson and Melissa. Oy vey.

ETA2: The mod's smackdown, for posterity.
Current Mood: amused
