Ashley posts about how her parents won't let her go to the Headbanger's Ball. She also gives a wishlist of CDs from VERY metal bands like, Alien Ant Farm and Static-X.

People in the community are not happy to see this, or her bad typing, and let her know it.

Wow -- metal fans are kind of...they're kind of boring assholes, aren't they? I expected something more hardcore than them telling some silly 14 year-old that she's retarded and "mallcore."

The community is more literate than most people would give them credit for. (Not so much myself; I only know a few people into metal, and they're pretty well spoken.) Even though "Your favorite band sucks" sniping tends to annoy me, it's done rather well here.

But the OP is straight out of the box.

Wow, seems like this community is much in the "if it isn't from the 80s/early 90s, it just ain't metal enough". I mean, I don't particularly think that any of the bands Ashley mentioned are quite "metal" (Static X is vaguely debatable, though), but there was no need for a community of people to repeat "your bands suck. I'm so metal. your bands suck. I'm so metal" five times fast.

Then again, just the sentence fragment "my boyfriens and i was going to go" hurts me enough to remove about half of my pity quotient.

We metal fans do tend to be an elitist lot. In all fairness, the community is responding not just to her choice of bands, but also to her refusal to properly spell or punctuate, and is treating her as a stupidly-behaving adult instead of a rather silly child.

I remember the excitement of being fifteen and discovering all the different ways the word "fuck" could be used. I'll bet it was annoying back then, too.

But really. Even aside from her choice of music (and I must be old, because I haven't even heard of more than one of those bands)... A metalhead called Ashley? ::snickers:: No offense to any Ashleys about, but it's just such a preppy name.

Heh...metalheads like this amuse me. I was into the scene myself way back when. I checked out the "interests" and noticed some significant omissions, and some questionable additions. Ah well, to each their own.

Some of those folks responding to the kid though were being real assholes, not that her responses were any more mature and eloquent, but I kinda felt for the girl.

I'm getting soft in my dotage.

WAAH. I was excited to find a metal community [never thought they existed - stupid me!] and then disappointed that it was full of people like that... Can anyone rec good metal communities?

And the question about NWOBHM - sure, I knew what that meant when I was 14, but that was 10 years ago, it's not that big a deal these days. I'll bet that many metalists these days have never heard of it. It's not like everyone worships Iron Maiden & the like...

Does anyone here know Static-X? I've never heard it myself, but they played here in Finland with Cradle of Filth [I think... might have been Slayer. Some noisy metal band I don't like anyway] so that suggests in my mind that they're metal...

Well, what do I know. I mostly listen to Finnish metal...
