RESPECT YOUR HEROES!
So John Byrne posts to his forum about how us damn kids ain't got no respect for the superheros of old! Don't call Superman 'Sups' or Batman 'Bats'! What if you met them in a dark alley!? What'd you do THEN, eh?!

About a billion people suck up and tell him "DUDE LOL U R SO RITE!!1!", but a few disagree, so Bryne locks the thread against posting. Can't let anyone interrupt your wanking by criticizing your technique, after all!

Uh... you mean John Byrne. A big name in comics. But apparently so big that his head has floated off, and he's forgotten how many of his fellow actual comics authors CALL THEM BATS AND SUPES. -Flash- calls both of them that on a regular basis.
I think Byrne hit his head on a toilet, and instead of coming up with the flux capacitor, he came up with an insane rant.

Typo fixed. [taps her glasses and resolves to get that eye appointment soon]

I think that having a floating head would be a great superhero ability. "I am - EGO MAN!! With my power of my INFLATED HEAD, I can fly!"

"Yeah, because it's not like everyone ELSE on the team can fly."

Sure, it's faster to type "Supes" instead of "Superman" -- tho the accumulated fractions of a second one would add to ones free time by doing this seem to me not entirely worthy of the lack of respect inherent in using such abreviations.

Notice the man complaining of abreviating a superhero's name is using abreviations himself. Hypocritical much?

It's all about respect . These nicknames diminish the characters. They strip them of dignity. They whittle away the (already fragile) reality of the tales.

You sure your grip on reality is as firm as you claim it to be, or have you been greasing your hands again?

Seriously -- would you call Batman "Bats" to his face? Even Superman, who is a much more "approachable" kind of guy -- if he were real, would you actually feel comfortable addressing him as "Supes"?

The world will truly come to an end if we all start giving superheroes cutesy nicknames (and that's assuming that Batman is even a superhero to begin with. I thought to be a superhero meant you had super powers..)..

(and that's assuming that Batman is even a superhero to begin with. I thought to be a superhero meant you had super powers..)

Nope. Basically, to qualify as a superhero, you've just got to go above and beyond what's expected from "everyday" heroes such as cops, firemen, etc. You expect heroism such as going into a burning building to save a little girl... going into a burning building, having a fistfight with the guy that set the fire, then dragging him AND the little girl out, all while dressed really cool, qualifies you as a superhero.

Oddly enough, I have been the recipient of this same sort of flame.

I think most of you guys know that I write HP fics, all Slytherin and Death Eater oriented stuff. I have been known to refer to my muses/characters/etc by a number of nicknames.

For instance, Moody is the Paranoid Dratsab, Mulciber is the Little Tyrant (actually, Moody nicknamed him that), and the Lucius in my "House of Ill Faith" series is the Unseelie Crackbaby (because he is just like "Lightningwar" Lucius, except that his brain is broke).

Well, I am in the habit of referring to Voldemort as "Bad Tommy".

Faith Accompli finds this offensive.

Eh, Bats and Supes would probably be really annoyed by cutesy nicknames. Which would be absolutely the right reason -to- use them. Bring them down a peg.

With all they have given you, in all these years, haven't they earned at least that much respect?

They sure have, Johnny boy! But rather than showing my respect by spelling out "Batman" each and every time, I prefer to show it by writing about Bruce fucking Dick whenever he feels like it! I think he'd thank me for that, because Nightwing's pretty hot.

And hey, your bad spelling makes Superman cry.

Oh, Byrnie Byrn-Byrn Byrniekins John Byrne, how your wanking has grown to surpass even mutated X-Men Austin wank.

Seriously -- would you call Batman "Bats" to his face? Even Superman, who is a much more "approachable" kind of guy -- if he were real, would you actually feel comfortable addressing him as "Supes"?

Why, yes. Yes I would. Then I would put on spandex and try to rob the first national bank out of respect for the gravity of the superhero genre, because we must take it so serious that shortened names are blasphemy and disrespectful even though it's being used in canon.

Quick, get me my wank gun!

Not to mention that they do it in the movies (at least the Batman movies) too.

Oh wait; I forgot. Movies are a blasphemy and a sell-out that's pandering itself to an unappreciative audience who wouldn't care either way so long as the Hawt Boi of the Month was in it, and thus are a slap in the face of the Holy Scriptures that are Comic Book Canon. (This spoken while conveniently overlooking the fact that comic book universes tend to reinvent themselves in some way every decade or so.)

Quick, get me my wank gun!

Pfft. Wank gun. All the real wankers have got a wank ray.

When you think about it, it's almost like dueling wank. Austen thinks we're all a bunch of tightass whiners who take this shit too seriously, and Byrne thinks we're all a bunch of punk kids who don't take it seriously enough.

It's like the Wanky Generation Gap.

The Comic Shop Guy on "The Simpsons" did not spring fully grown from Zeus' head.

I do so love the "you're perpetuating stereotypes!" mini rant within this wank. I especially like the person who said that LOTR fans don't make up abbreviated names. (Being a LOTR fan, I beg to differ.)

I especially like that point about how people who dress up in costume to go to conventions and have the gall to leave the convention and go to McDonald's or something are perpetuating the stereotype that .... what? Someone went to a con? I think if one was to walk into a resteraunt in a Superman costume, there might be a few looks but most people would be able to figure out that this was not daily attire. And some people think that fans of anything, (comic books, LOTR, Star Trek), are wierd to begin with... so is there really a point to "what is the rest of the world going to think of us?!" view? *cue eyeroll*

Besides, this guy wouldn't last three days in the anime/gaming fandom. We're talking fangirls who routinely call ubervillains with the power to crush the earth names that probably translate to something like "Snugglypoobear."

Damn it, it hasn't changed. It's still the stupidest argument I've ever seen.

Talk about dividing factors. God knows comic fans take enough grief once they pass through puberty, for not being "adults" and putting "The kiddie books away now." But now here comes Byrne's to tell us how to be "proper" fans, indicating that there is a further "inner circle" of true comic fans that "know how to mind their manners around these fictional characters."

What next? A uniform? "Okay, if you wear the GREEN spandex, you're cool. If you wear the PURPLE spandex, that means U suck!"
