The wank will bewith you, always.
Ah Master-Apprentice, home to TPM slash. There's been a lot of wank lately, sadly not on the web so not visible to you, the readers of [info]fandom_wank.

But wait! Jedi Rita posts a long essay to the mailing list about a particular series of stories. She gets very little in the way of discussion about/because of this essay. And so she complains about it. At length.

Responses in other LJs range from the serious and sensible, to the somewhat grumpy to the rather humorous.

Good Lord. That's one heck of a wanky tantrum, there.

A wanktrum?

The passive-aggression! The self-abasement! The us'n'them-isms! The Oscar for Most Self-Centered in Her Own Journal goes to...

Like length and senseless dedication to an academic essay of a story really requires a response. As if.

WAAA! She deleted it!

So much for that, but the replies gave me an idea of what she was saying.

Bah--I HATE when people delete the wank before I get a chance to read it! Don't they KNOW it detracts from my enjoyment and understanding of the wank?

Graaaagh . . . *goes off to stomp something*

Goddammit, that's the second wank in a row that's been deleted before I could read it.

I hereby decree that no one in the world is allowed to wank while I'm asleep. I don't sleep all that much, y'all can afford to wait until I wake up.

Here's a little gift for everyone who missed the main wank. My computer had it still cached from last night, so you all get to read it! ^_^

Excuse me for getting pissy, but...
...it's my LJ, so I'm entitled.

What the hell, people?! I just spent all this time and effort writing an essay of serious lit crit, the kind that numerous people bewail no one every does anymore, and it's garnered two comments on the list and *no* discussion whatsoever on my LJ. What gives? Instead, everyone is harping all over the weepy Obi thread. Well ya know what? That's *not* lit crit! That's opinionating! Which is perfectly fine, but it's a far cry from the "gritty discussion" that some folks keep saying they want. You want some serious discussion about crying in fics? Then pull out some examples and debate the pros and cons. But opining is *not* debate, and it hardly constitutes a discussion.

What is going on? Did no one read "Fates?" I just can't believe that. Did I make such a convincing argument in my essay that no one disagrees with me? I can't believe that, either. What I'd *like* to believe is that everyone is currently re-reading the entire "Fates" saga in order to prepare their own argument, but I fear that's just wishful thinking. (And if Leandra and Raina would ever speak to me again, I'd love to know whether "Fates" has gotten more hits since I posted my essay.) So where, then, is the discussion?

I can just imagine it. Those who moan about The Decline and Fall of the MA List sniff, "Well, *I* didn't read 'Fates.' It doesn't match the standards of the Good Old Days." Like what, for example? The work of Lillith Sedai? I'll grant you she was great, but look around. She left the SW fandom! A lot of those great old greats have left. And whose fault is that? Their own, and no one else's. They are entitled to quit writing, but why should we hang on to them as if they define the fandom?

The "Fates" saga is one of the largest and most significant undertakings we've seen on MA in the two years that I've been here. And these moaners have nothing to say about it? Maybe they didn't even read it? Why? Because Qui isn't Obi's master? And what else -- they don't read my stories because they're about Bail? They don't read QAJ for -- whatever reason? Of course they are entitled to read what they want, but if these moaners can't be bothered to read the most significant authors who are currently producing on MA, then quite frankly, I wish they'd shut up and go haunt another list (as so many people were so happy to tell Jane.) I'm sick of hearing this bitching, and then they don't respond when someone offers something substantial. It says to me that they'd rather sit around and moan because it makes them look superior.

Yes, I do have certain specific people in mind. Yes, there are probably other people I *don't* have in mind for whom this rant is relevant. I quite frankly don't care who thinks I'm talking about them or not. And in the end, I suppose it doesn't really matter. I write and post these essays because *I* think they are interesting. I want to know what other people think on these matters. But if everyone would rather opine about whether or not it's appropriate for Obi-Wan to ever cry, that's their choice.

I'm sorry for ranting, but I'm just sorely disappointed and frustrated right now. I would really like to hear why people did or did not respond to my essay. Essays could use feedback as much as fic does! So please give it to me: good, bad, or ugly; agree or disagree.

And thanks for listening. *slinks off to feel sorry for self*

Here's the essay: http://www.livejournal.com/users/jedirita/26581.html It's actually quite interesting, though I haven't read the series she's talking about, so I can't really comment on that part of it.

So I'm just going to blow off work for the day, and retreat into my Tatooine cave and meditate for a bit.... And hopefully when I emerge, I'll be a better, wiser, and less stressed Jedi for it.

Maybe I'm getting something wrong here, but isn't the Jedi stuff supposed to be a discipline much like Eastern martial arts? A discipline like where you spend years studying to do stuff like, ohh I don't know... say.... maintaining your emotional balance enough to NOT throw hissy fits?

Not that I'm a big SW fan. It just seems odd.

Well, if you want to get technical, the Jedi system--both fighting style and mindset--is overwhelmingly samurai in nature. Most of the things Yoda teaches (Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering) is Buddhist in nature, and even the fighting style is samurai.

Whining doesn't really factor into either system . . .

If I understand the dharma correctly, whining leads to moaning, moaning leads to complaining, and complaining leads to someone smacking you in the head until you shut the fuck up.

Head-smacking encourages mindfulness, while ass-kicking energizes the anal chi.

Both paths lead to enlightenment, of course.
