From the fandom that never stops. Again.
On the ever-lively subject of H/H vs R/H, Pallas Athena calls Angua9 out on using terms such as "crazy talk" to dismiss the other side of debates, including the word "perverse" apparently used two months ago, and appeals to her to set an example by "elevating the discourse" of... ship debates. Oh, well.

(I don't know any of the history of this, but it sounds like a fountain of wank in itself.)

To which Angua9 replies with an absolute mistresspiece of wank.

Highlights include: I hope if I make claims which are illogical or farfetched or “crazy” that someone will inform me of it, rather than allowing me to persist in my delusional beliefs.

To which Mad Eyed Mike responds:

Angua,

I'm glad you said this because I personally find your arguments and supposed canon evidence to be both nonsensical and extremely delusional. Everything from logical conclusions and common sense to taking into account realistic HP character motivations is lacking and in my opinion, some of your arguments border on insanity.

But my hands-down favourite would be Angua9 herself, with:

You like to project an image of yourself as a “goddess” come down from on high to dispense wisdom to the masses. Well, I have an image of myself, too. I think of myself as a tart McGonagall-type teacher, crusty but not cruel, demanding very high standards of logic and expression, earnest, business-like, and somewhat lacking in charm and sympathy. I believe that “nonsense” and other such terms fit well with this role. Perhaps I have been egocentric to see myself this way, but I believed that my advanced age and experience and my very great efforts to make myself an expert on canon and JKR quotes made such a pose allowable.

Dear FictionAlley. What would we all do without you?

Angua wasn't kidding about Pallas Athena's "Goddess" thing -- from a few threads ago (http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=668184#post668184):

The goddess strolls slowly into the room. She nods appreciatively to her fellow shipmates that have been lovingly tending to the eternal flame in her absence.

Yes, I have returned. For those who were unaware of this fact, I was one of the debaters for the Great Ship Debate at the Nimbus Symposium. I had decided for tactical reasons that I would voluntarily withdraw from the DT for a period of time because I did not want my worthy opponents to know how I reacted and responded to the massive canon ball that arrived in late June.

And then, of course, can't miss the latest Can't Stand H/Hr (http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=794116#post794116) thread where there is mucho gloating over those wussy H/Hrs being struck dumb by Angua's important insights. I've never gotten this debate. Harry and Ron and Hermione, in my opinion, have been far too close for far too long to be each other's romantic interests--it'd be like incest. Also, I'm always annoyed by the notion that any prominent female character in a group of heroes has got to eventually hook up with one of them. Yuck!

*deep breath*

WHO THE FUCK CARES WHO HERMIONE GETS WITH???

Ok, i feel better now. I mean, i'm a HP fan, but i don't really care who Hermione ends up with. The books lean pretty obviously towards Ron, so i'll accept that. Though i think Ron is a bit of a dork and i don't know what Hermione would see in him exactly.

I think Hermione and Harry have a very deep friendship and them messing around would spoil that...and i do prefer to read H/Hr simply because i don't like Ron much...but hey, i really don't see the need to have screaming wanky fits about why theirloveissopureOMG!!1

Uh..can someone point me towards a good place to read pro H/Hr argument? I'm really interested to see why exactly people think they should be together.

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/whats_new.html

It seems that he has gone over the top and revealed his true colours as a shipper gaining himself loads of 'fans' in the process. This is the guy who advertises his site as a factual resource but who is he trying to kid I wonder!

I've never gotten H/Hr vs. R/Hr debates, especially the nasty drama queen variety. I like both of them, but I'd also be just as happy if Harry and Ron get it on and leave Hermione free to go hang out with Neville. :P

Though, at one time, this was my attitude about said thread:

In New Zeeland, there is a tribe that beats itself on the head every morning with a piece of wood in the thoughts that their day has to get better than that.

Well, who needs the wood when you have the Debate Thread on the Trio forum at FAP?

I've begged the mods to shut it down, but they won't, fearing more wank and possibly a report here. Shutting it down would at least stop some of the destruction that this fandom brings upon itself.

My other recommendation: Get the current people out of power at SugarQuill and replace them with more Swiss mods. Then, make an overhaul at the boards, too...as in delete them for a while. The fics can stay. Appearantly, some people like that OBHWF drivel.

First: I ask once again, is EVERYONE but me reading the hot-and-heavy-romance-novel version of these books?

Second: H/H, R/H, who cares? I want *canon* relationships, like Sirius/Remus! ;-)

Third: does anyone else miss the days when people couldn't comment anon on f_w? At least sign your names, multiple anons! It doesn't have to be your real name you ball-less wonders, just make something up, so we can keep track of all your namecalling and infighting startlingly insightful commentary.

From the depths of my soul I scream a Pedro "NOOOOOOOOOO!"

Why the HELL is who these characters end up with so damn important that it'd spawn two threads of this length? I am astounded by the depth of this wank. Er, no. Shallowness.

As they say on my usual hangout, fuck that for a game of soldiers.

I actually like the threesome myself because you can have it all! :D

Well, except femslash. Heh

Anyway, this is all the more reason why I'm glad I gravitated over to Sirius/Remus instead of Harry/Ron. HEeheheh

All these H/Hr vs. R/Hr wanksdebates, and then in book 7 Ron dies, Harry elopes with Voldie, and Hermione becomes the Dark Lady and marries Marcus Flint.

Having read the posts in question and trying to put my personal bias in the matter aside, I believe that

1. Angua may indeed have overstepped the line of ludicrousity a bit with the "my image of myself is..." thing. I know her and she's a nicer person than she gives herself credit for, but I guess that she knew full well that this sort of honesty (because we all have those sort of ridiculous views of ourselves, whether conscious or subconscious) would expose her to mockery, and made the decision to go ahead and publicize it nonetheless. Non-sequitur as it may seem to the critical (or hostile) eye, it was at most a tangent in an otherwise very well thought-out post.

2. Contrary to the Mcgonagall speech which could maybe be described as weird or gratuitous at most, Mad Eye Mike's response was the sort of thing I'd laugh at and appreciate in a TV show or a work of fiction, but really cheap and uncalled for in a situation involving real people- and doubly so in what is supposed to be a debate thread (the fact that, in actuality, it is nothing but a disorganised carnival of hostility and characteristically dull notions- the absolute majority of which have been cultivated and processed ad nauseam- notwithstanding). It's pretty clear that the response was more of an attempt at oneupsmanship than the result of a serious evaluation of Angua's writings against objective standards. I've seen very few examples of things worthy of the title "nonsense" or "delusional" in the DT- at most, it's your run-of-the-mill ad-hoc silliness, which still makes sense and remains within the borders of sanity (in its own bizarre way); Angua's writings most certainly do not qualify for either descriptor.

3. The ship debate is silly. Sometimes we participators do take it much more seriously than we ought to. Being given perspective on it from the outside after having participating in it for some time can, may and will make us feel extremely silly (I know it's done that to me, and I don't even consider myself a true participator). But you'll be surprised of how many things that have nothing at all to do with the Harry Potter series you can learn from it; in a sense it's a case study of science, psychology, logics, the art of debate, and (above all) sociology.

That said, I still can't pretend the amazing amount and variety of wank we've been subjected to in the past week has been anything short of ridiculous.

Or amazing, depending on your point of view.

-AceMyth, who doesn't feel like making up a pseudonym for the sake of anonymity, but you'll live.

P.S. Nice decision with closing the DT for 24 hours, Erinmiran- let's hope this calms down or the trio forum may collapse from wank overload (something which it has been threatening to do for quite some time now, but that is beside the point).
