WHEEZE! *choke* Bwahahahahahahaha!
This was just priceless.

[info]zannechaos made a post a day or so ago in [info]fanficrants regarding Bad Fic writers and how we may not spend money reading them, but we do spend time. It was a good rant, and just about everyone agreed with her.

Today, anonymous the coward comes in and says: You shouldn't review people who don't want you to know how bad their writing is. (Yeah, made no sense to me, either.)

[info]zannechaos and I reply a few times. And it becomes obvious that said anonymous person is reading Zanne's journal.

So, [info]zannechaos locks the journal entry before she and I discuss this person's IP address. (Meaning said anonymous person should no longer be able to read it, right? Right? Heh.) Said post from Zanne's journal is over here.

Apparently the anonymous coward is still able to read the entry and see what we're saying to each other. Hmmm...

So, after some detective work, [info]zannechaos figures out who our little anonymous poster is.

It's evidently narushinjo. Who is still attempting to claim it's not him/her/whatever.

Oh Lordy. What a tool. And on someone else's account, no less.

For the record, zanne, I agree with what you initially wrote, and would extend it to pretty much any creative endeavor, not just fic. My motto is, "If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right."

...reading your write-up here, now I'm laughing my arse off. (And I'm pretty sure it's not just sleep-dep talking.)

As I just said in a locked, and not completely related post: For the last frellin' time, people...!!! My name is NOT Chie Sakamachi!

I'm gonna try to sleep now.

You know what I need? I need a new Saito icon that says, "My fandom thinks you're a moron." Either that or "Wanku Soku Zan."

You have to give the "sister" something (though I'm not sure what) for persistence.

How 'bout a condom so "she" can keep all her wank in one spot, rather than let it get loose all over the place?

Stay way, way, WAY the fuck out of this one. Am aquainted with friends of the involved. I don't know why Naru's chosen to do this, but that's her choice and I'm stepping back. -_-

While Anon later claims to be a 'sister', if Naru has a brother, by the name of Michael, it's possible from what's been said after Naru started posting with her own journalname, that it was him.

Anon later admits in my own LJ to someone else that they're basically stalking me. -_-

Er... I can't say I think the metaphor works. If other people's time is currency that I am paid, shouldn't I be in possession of the payment afterwards?

If someone reads my work in the woods (whether or not next to a tree falling), and there is no one there to see it, no gain accrues to me. Further, if time spent constitutes payment, then I the writer have also paid.

The idea that a transaction economy, where reader-pays-time => reader-demands- enjoyment, is feasible, is pretty naive. For that economy to sustain itself, any given writer's effort would have to reliably cause any given reader's enjoyment. And: no.

Anon's point was ill-focussed, but hardly a flame: I can't quite understand why his/her identity was a matter of such urgent interest.

:O

Did you miss the part about Anon being still capable of viewing an LJ entry and resulting comments after I friendlocked it?

If someone can view a locked entry, what does that tell you?

I think she was saying it seemed strange that having someone disagree with you (in a fairly mild, non-flaming way) upset you so much, and that it was of such importance to you to find out who the anon was in the first place.

I agree the subsequent behavior was definitely wanky (blaming posting on a roommate/family member/evil twin? How do people not realize how stupid this makes them sound?), but I think the original comment made several good points, and I think your response to it was completely over the top.

*shrug* Of course, I also think the original rant was not a little wanky in its own right. - I'm all for mocking badfic, and god knows I'd love to see more quality fanfic and less crap, but I think suggesting that writers "owe" readers, let alone attempting to suggest that it's the readers who are doing the writers a favor, suggests quite a sense of entitlement. There's a lot of awful shit out there, certainly. But there are plenty of things you can do to avoid it (I personally rarely read stories that aren't by authors I know unless they've been recced by someone I trust), and when you do start reading a story you deem to be badfic, you can always just stop reading. It's pretty easy to do.

If something is posted publicly, it's absolutely fair game for public criticism. Saying something sucks, mocking it mercilessly, giving the author detailed criticism - all these responses I can understand. But I don't get claiming that authors owe you, I don't get implying that you do authors a favor by reading their stories, and I certainly don't get the suggestion that authors are somehow "cheating" you if you decide their story is badfic.

But maybe that's just me.
