The O.C. wank
My first post here. I'm never sure when something is wanky and when it's not. After a conversation with a friend, we agreed that it was wanky.

It began on the 20th and the thread is still going.

Me(9:04:30 PM): Okay, here's the thing. Here in Canada, we get the new episode on the Monday while you guys get it on the Wednesday. Somebody made a post about it. You have the whole "Canada rocks! Oh it's so great to be Canadian" post and comments. And then American jumps in and from there it goes bad. People starts insulting the countries, terrorism is brought into the whole thing and silly arguement are used. "You're just jealous you don't have a O.C. in your country." "And you're just jealous we invented hockey, the greatest sport in the world."
Her (9:06:05 PM): Oh, so wanky.

See said thread here

There was another thread but I can't seem to find it. But this should keep you entertained for at least 15 minutes.

Gah, so much clicking. Why can't it be a threaded message board. Bah. I give up. My instant gratification button isn't getting hit. Must wander off and avoid protection from porn.

Well, there's Scott Thompson. I'm sure there are others, but come on, once you've got Scott Thomspon, he's all the gay you need, really.

You forgot Rufus Wainwright. Also, there's this other comedian, Elvira Kurt, who's been on Comedy Central before.

Oh, and Rick Mercer from This Hour Has 22 Minutes. I know that, and yet the most I've seen of the show's been clips from the 'net.

I forgot Rufus was Canadian. Shame on me. I should have remembered Elvira Kurt. And I did not know Rick Mercer was gay. The only work of his that's filtered down here to me was The Industry that used to air late Sunday nights on my local PBS station.

Are they actually saying Canadians are jealous because they don't have an actual Orange County? Not just the show?

I submit that no one who has lived in or near O.C. would ever claim it was something to be jealous of.

Dunno about Canada, but from what I saw of Orange County Australia already has one. It was bizarre, I travelled all the way across the Pacific to get somewhere that looked just like Logan. And I can get to Logan in like half an hour. By bus.

Although why I'd WANT to get to Logan, I have no idea.

Re:

Um. Okay, this is how I normally explain Logan. Brisbane and Logan used to be seperate, but they both grew and kind of smooshed togther in the middle. So while it's all one big city-like mass, there's technically two cities.

Now, if Brisbane was New York? Logan would be New Jersey. Every celebrity who comes from Logan says they're from Brisbane. As as soon as they're famous, Brisbane happily agrees. They move to one of Brisbane's nicer suburbs (Logan has very few of the nicer suburbs in the area, but amost all - okay, all - of the crappy ones) and nobody ever speaks of it again.

Amusingly, back when it was a small town in 1941 Logan's population was substantially increased by the addition of an American military base. Named Camp Cable.

Camp Cable! Man, military history cracks my shit up.

Still. That should have been "...still has worst security of any major airport in the United States," despite the fact that two of the four planes hijacked on 9/11 originated at Logan.

Definitely no problem swanning through in the worst days of foot and mouth. They stopped everyone on the UK flight I was on, but I had an Irish passport, so they didn't bother checking which flight I'd been on and just waved me through. And I didn't bother reporting myself because I'd been religiously avoiding all agricultural areas since they announced F&M in the UK.

I'd just like to say that almost every member of my immediate family has been stopped at least once in Logan, made to take off their shoes and put them through the X-ray, had their bags checked, or has been pulled aside for a 'special' X-ray. my dad holds the record at eight times being stopped and x-rayed... four of those were on the same flight. And I was talking to some girl that worked at Hot Topic once and she said that she'd worn almost six inch high black boots covered in metal chains to the airport and wasn't stopped... well, I had to take off my one inch high blue strappy sandals and put them through the X ray. XD

Lots of security... it's just being misplaced.

The Hell?
[info]wickedripeplum

That could be, in part, because the Canadian grading scale makes it MUCH EASIER to pass. In the US, a 64% or below is an F. In Canada, a 49% and below is an F. In Canada, a 60%, which will fail you in the US, will get you a C+. An 80%, which is a C in the US, is an A- in Canada. This explains a lot when I think about the quality of hatemail I get.

Those numbers aren't right for the US or Canada. And speaking as someone who goes to McGill (the school they sourced for the grade info) and has gone to schools in the US it's way harder to get a good grade here since all the professors are on a mission to make sure no one gets a A - ever.

Um. WTF? *blinkblink* Where is this person's information coming from? Last I checked, a 60% is a D at the University of California, and an 80% is a B (or an A-, if your teacher is lenient). Anything below 60 is an F. There are some classes here where they inflate the grades and a 60% can be a C+, but the only ones I've seen are physics and upper-level math courses, because it's fairly close to humanly impossible to make above a 70 in some of them, in which case I do think it's justifiable.

Of course, I'm sure it varies from university to university, but I thought A=90 and above, B=80 and above, and so on, applied pretty much across the board in the US, from my experiences at the schools I've been to. I DID once have a teacher who insisted anything below a 64 was a failing grade, but I think said teacher also kept a little dog at home who she'd taught to do the Nazi salute.

I watched a few minutes of it, and it made my head hurt. They were on a beach, and in the background was a large cliff that IS in OC, but the beach they were on ISN'T the one infront of that cliff. Then they went to a big house that looks exactly like the ones all over the inland like in Laguna Niguel or Aliso Viejo, but it was overlooking the water, which NONE of those things do. All the houses overlooking the water are like, the size of an apartment because they're from the 50s. Or they fell down. Or they have a freeway or hotel infront of them now.

And they made it seem like there's no grungy bad kids in OC - which, interestingly enough, makes up like 50% of the teenage population here. Yes, there are rich people - but we also have our share of ghetto cheap areas that breed such children (like me!). For example: my mother and I live in a ghetto fabulous apartment building with no heat from the 1940s in Dana Point directly across the street from a multi-billion dollar custom home. O.o So while WE have to worry about the drug dealer across the hall, THEY have their own security team and gaurd dogs behind the gates. Okaaaay.

Er.. yes. [/rant]
