An older cross-anime fandom wank!
This is old (in Internet time), but since I just found it...

Now anime fans can be scary. One of the most scary fandoms is the one for CLAMP's X/TB. And be the fandom small or large, if it's anime, the snark and the elitism is bound to come up. How about... when someone notices "similarities" in two animes?

The wanky parts in quick play: Even the first message points out that indeed, many animes use same plot devices!
How many series are there were the 'innocent young hero sees evil villain murder and is horribly cursed' anime are there?
Well, probably a lot, but that's besides the point...

The other similarities pointed include: The use of shikigami and ofuda! The purple and green eyes of the leads! The flinging sakura! One fake eye of the bad guy! (Ok, that last one is a bigger coincidence, but still they're different.) And the best: The picture of the lead character having a cross-shaped scar on his cheek!

OMG That's so totally a ripoff!!

Now, if YnM is the show that wanted to be X, is the fandom also following the footsteps of the Big Snarky One?

I should hope so.

*is addicted to snark*

Waitaminute, they're quibbling over the use of windblown flower petals?! Something that shows up in every single anime featuring a bishounen within a hundred miles of a cherry tree?

Next they'll be screaming over how all anime boys with wings have to molt their weight in in feathers. Or how every bishounen has to look as gay as possible.

Admittably, that one picture of Tsuzuki is rather suspiciously like some of Kamui.

However. There is one very important question that needs the be asked here. Why the hell does it matter? They're both good series in of their own rights, so what if there are some vague similarities between Seishirou and Muraki or what have you.

...Well, alright. There's one decent reason...this (http://www.katana-space.net/Forum/Clampesque/Messages/1019255822.871776) fic, which amused me greatly ^^

Maybe that one pic does. The WTF? comes when one knows that that pic was only a publicity illustration, done for a little fan service.

And you're damn right about that fic! It's very funny ^___^

Yeah. The Dreams of Sakura board? Pure, absolute wank.

I've never seen Yami No Matsuei, but I've read the manga a bit, and I like it. I'm involved in the X fandom. There are a few similarities, but, um. First of all, sakura are in EVERY GODDAMN ANIME EVER. They're significant to the Japanese. Ofuda? Used in several different types of eastern magic and religions.

Luckily, Aeanagwen has some common sense. And she puts it rather nicely. So, yeah.

I've always felt that YnM had more in common with the works of Kaori Yuki, not CLAMP. [Though I enjoy them both.]

Ever read Count Cain? That and the YnM artist seems to favor the highly detailed style of Ms. Yuki.

Er putting the tissues and baby oil away now. I think above poster makes a good point Yami and TB are basically similar genre's aimed at the same audience. And jeez you can't go feet feet in anime without smacking into a cherry tree, even the ones that take place in space.

Yep, I'm a fan of both but I'm not active in the X fandom. And the shows, apart from those little details (sakura etc) that are important in Japanese culture and staple acts in any shoujo manga, there's really nothing else in common. The genre is the same, but the experience of watching/reading is totally different.

Accidentally, I found this on Aeanagwen's lj.

At first cursory glance I thought it was wank based on someone seeing "similarities" in Tokyo Babylon and X.

Then I read the wank.

Now I want to go back to the idea that it's just someone who didn't know CLAMP did them both as continuous stories.

lmao. And next we're going to get some jizz about how Muraki is a Sephiroth (FFVII) rippoff, since we all know that Matsushita is a FFVII fan (At least enough so that she put random FFVII characters in the backgrounds of various scenes). ==;; That whole thing is total wankage. *fwap fwap fwap* ^_____^;;
The only real part of that whole TB/YnM accusation that even makes real sense is the villain thing, and I've seen so many molesty-evil villains that that's just plain silly. The one-eyed thing? Well, anyone recall a certain character named Farfello from another anime I shall not name? xDDD
All things rip other things off - there's an actual literary element known as the archetype that speaks of how this occurs very often in storylines and character designs. Just because two stories use modifications of certain archetypes means nothing at all. Maybe it's intended as a homage? I mean, it's no where near as much a ripoff as some things that come to mind. xD
*cough* Eva - Xenogears *cough*
^___________________^;;
And what's the matter with ripoffs? Isn't immitation the sincerest form of flattery, after all?

Ah, Sakura Board. They're right up there with Fiction Alley for me in terms of wanky amusement. What a novel idea on their part! *gasp* Surely no one's ever thought to compare the two series before. Now I have my own problems with Matsushita's writing style, but for that person to suggest that she so blatantly ripped off one of the most well-known mangaka teams out there without considering that anyone would notice is a tad insulting to her. And if you look beyond the whole "murder under the sakura" thing, the two series aren't really that similar far as shoujo manga go.

Still want me to write that essay though?
