A wee wank from a fandom for a show I have never, ever watched
I had stuck gehayi on my friends list because she had an interesting post on something that I can't remember. Then she got involved in the whole Thalia imbroglio, and then kept posting some boring stuff on NaNoWriMo, and then she put up this. So I have TOTALLY DEFRIENDED HER OMG LOL.

At any rate, she had posted some synopsis of an Angel episode, and then swiftly taken it down because someone criticized it for being inaccurate. Standard stuff, yes? And then, this:

If I watch any more episodes--which is by no means certain--I'll keep my opinions to myself. With this fandom, I should have known better than to say anything in the first place.

Now THAT'S drama! "Goodbye to all my Internet friends forever" can't hold a candle to "You criticized me, so I'm not gonna say anything anymore, and I'm not gonna watch it anymore, so NYAH NYAH WEEP."

I expect the wank to increase.

The part I liked best: "I should have kept my mouth shut" in the post, followed by "this is what I thought about the show blah blah blah for EIGHT paragraphs."

I don't know why you defriended her. She's funneh.

She was real, real tedious up until this smattering of FUNY. Humorless, even. This, well...I don't want wank laid at my feet like this. It makes me feel unsafe in my own home :D.

I see what you mean, Yeah. If one person's journal entries are so humorless that they draining the funny out of the neighboring entries on your friends list, then it's defriendin' time.

All threads like this should have a digression into the habits of Mexican wrestlers.

Just because.

I noticed the potential wank earlier, but waiting for it to blossom further before posting. Damn you for beating me to it!

She hasn't been on my friends' list long, but she's pulled this kind of stunt. IRC, she claimed that she was quitting writing BtVS/AtS fic as she didn't know the fandom well enough and was tired of being criticised for minor inaccuracies. It seemed rational enough but there was a real touch of wank in the way people were begging her not to go.

Also she compared her critics to the nerd trio. As a huge troika fan, I didn't see what was too wrong with that. God forbid that people should actually know the source material!

Admittedly I know very little about the whole affair, so it could have been sparked by utter trivia. Still, shouldn't a good beta help deal with that?

Yeah I just saw that too and wanted to go "Well and your point is what?" I mean if she said people were evil and made ray guns to see boobies I could understand the comparison but how dare people that sit around reading vampire/nerd/slayer pr0n know the detail and canon of the show! *gasp**shock**horror*

Seriously, who *cares* if someone disagrees. I spent the last three seasons of Buffy disagreeing with one of my best friends about the show. It was interesting. I miss those days, we had some of the best email conversations that truly helped wile away the hours I was supposed to be working.

She yanked down an article she wrote because someone criticized it, threatened in the same post to stop watching the show (implying that it was because the fandom was so M3ANIES), and called the original critic a nerd for actually knowing the details of a show they watched 12 hours previous.

So yes, I think that counts as wank. Minor wank since HP is not yet involved, but hey, it's the same color from a 3-incher as it is from a 7.5.

Awww... I feel obligated to ask you to quit slagging on Gehayi. I've read her journal before, and though it can get sorta, um, tedious, she's still great at commenting on mary-sue-community boards. In fact, she's actually most interesting to read on those community boards.

For example, see a post she did on Luna Lovegood on the deleterius journal:

>>Hello. Creator of Shanon Marlow, could I please speak to you for a minute? There are a few things I want to tell you.

>>LUNA LOVEGOOD IS NOT CRAZY.

>>LUNA LOVEGOOD IS NOT STUPID.

>>Sorry for shouting, but Luna is all too often portrayed as being either insane or mentally retarded. I hate it. Luna is a bright, curious, open-minded, loyal and courageous young lady. She is also an eccentric. Eccentric people populate British literature. Luna is but one of many.

>>Luna is not crazy. I cannot say that enough. What she is an individual who does not follow the crowd. She is scorned and treated badly by many of her peers for this, but she does not break under pressure. She remains wholly and completely herself.

>>Luna quietly but openly supports Harry at a time when even his housemates are unsure of Harry's and Dumbledore's sanity. She is clever enough to think outside of the box (it is she who comes up with the idea of using Thestrals to fly to the Ministry of Magic instead of brooms). She is close friends with Ginny Weasley--who sees her worth before Harry, Ron and Hermione do. Despite Hermione's obvious scorn of Luna's crytozoological beliefs, Luna never attacks Hermione, and in fact provides Hermione with a medium for Harry's interview with Rita Skeeter regarding Voldemort's return--her father's wizardly tabloid newspaper, the Quibbler.

>>Luna is the only non-Gryffindor to fight in the Battle of the Ministry of Magic. She gets hurt (knocked unconscious, in fact) because she is trying to protect Ginny, who is unable to walk, due to a broken ankle. Please note--she could have run for help, and no one would have thought less of her. She chose to stay, and to protect a friend.

>>Finally, Luna is the person to whom Harry speaks about Sirius' death--not Ron or Hermione. And it is Luna who tells Harry that yes, death is horrible and you don't stop missing or loving those who died...but, she avers, someday she will see her dead mother again. And, by implication, Harry will see Sirius as well.

>>Intelligence. Open-mindedness. Respect for others. Friendship. Loyalty. Courage. Valor. Faith. Luna has a lot of sterling qualities.

>>She deserves MUCH better than the treatment she gets in this fic.

So, she can be a wanker on her personal journal... but she's enormously entertaining on her post to other communities.

So she does something rather mockworthy and we're not supposed to mock her because... she likes Luna Lovegood? And makes long and tiresome posts in her defense? Which are then dragged over to Fandom Wank as evidence of why she should not be mocked for her wankery on a completely different issue bewilderingly unrelated to Harry Potter Mary Sues? I think I understand now - it's like how we're not supposed to laugh at Highlander wank because eggplants are purple.

I'd like everyone to know that I'm planning to make a post sometime in the future about how everyone who fails to give me feedback is a morbidly obese and smelly failure who probably enjoys illicit and nonconsensual relations with members of their immediate family and their pets (especially the goldfish, those sluts) and how it doesn't matter if you don't know the fandom or even know me, you still must write me at least 7k's worth of praise because I am the greatest wordsmith this side of Vladimir Nabakov and must be adored and worshipped and my shoes must be licked twice every Thursday and so on and so forth (I haven't quite figured out how exactly I'm going to put everything). But I claim wank immunity, because I like kittens and sending Christmas cards and I once made someone chuckle once or twice. So no wanking me! I called it!

So, people move past it all the time. The Luna Lovegood thing didn't particularly impress me. And yeah, it sucks if your friends are wanked. Feel free to defend them, but don't pretend the wank wasn't clearly there.

No one's really 'reaming' her about anything. She was WANKY! We're WANKING her. That's what we DO here. That's why it's called FANDOM WANK.

Hell we're all wanky at some point, that's why the i_wank community was created.

Even the most intelligent and thoughtful person can have an off day or a wanky moment. It doesn't make them a bad person, I don't think anyone here dislikes her personally.

Sorry but to me it's seems to be rather hypocritical to say you can wank 'this' person but you can't wank 'that' person.
