So as an [intelligent] avid DDR player, I avoid the namesake's US based fan website, DDRFreak, like the bubonic plague.

Someone brought this post from their message board to my attention:

A guy joins the forums JUST to ask advice on proposing to his girlfriend on the machine.

What baffles me are the people supporting him.

(Not only is it a dumb idea, but for those of you who know the game well, you'll recognize he's going about it the wrong way, too.)

This level of obsession is simply sickening.

... my ex loved DDR. I loved watching him (don't ask. just... don't.) and even he finds this sad in the extreme.

Of course my first thought is, Ordinary World is a fucking depressing song; what is WRONG with you?

>>Lucky, let me give you my sudgestion for your idea. Trust me, DDR is great, but for a proposal? No. This is going to be an event that you both will remember your entire night, and should probably happen in alittle more romantic setting then your local arcade, with friends and total strangers around. >>

THANK GOD, SANITY.

Then it scares me that two people who think this is a good idea are getting married, and possibly procreating.

*shudder*

...then he says he has no other ideas and asks for ideas. From a bunch of random people on the internet.

I'm sorry, you're just too dumb to spawn. That's it.

Dude, a couple people got engaged at a basketball game I was working at last week. He had them trick her into going out on the floor for something else, and then dropped a proposal bomb on her, while the Hornets mascot was standing right there. I think he even gave the mascot the ring to give to her. All told, DDR is kind of a step up. A very shallow step, but who are we to deny the importance of 3 millimeters?

I've always assumed that people did stupid things like that because their s.o. is less likely to say no in front of thousands of people.

Yeah, like the Jumbotron (what's the name for those in baseball arenas?) proposals at baseball games. I would assume it's the peer pressure factor; nobody wants to give the crowd an unhappy ending.

Personally, if someone pulled something like that on me, I'd act like I didn't know them. Buuuuuuut that might explain why my prospects are nil in the first place. ;)

A few years ago, some guy on theforce.net proposed to his girlfriend on their message boards.

From what I've heard, they're still together.

I can understand that if he's just plunked down a lot of money for a ring, he might feel a bit frugal. But this guy seems to be really hung up on not spending much on "the proposal." It's kinda sad. Hello? You don't have to spend money to be romantic. You don't even have to go anywhere to be romantic. And you can always celebrate with some DDR after. No matter how many well meaning suggestions he gets along those lines, I have a feeling he's going to ignore all of them.

Not to mention public proposals suck, gimmicky or otherwise. What if she doesn't want to say no but says yes because she'd feel bad otherwise? Ugh. Guys? NEVER DO IT.

And what if the poor girl says no, or bursts into tears, or just loses it on the spot due to the possible thousands of eyes watching them?

God. Some jerks never really think anything of the person they're with. They just think it'll be kewl (or whatever) to get validation in front of a crowd.

Pricks.

Aww. Maybe you all will think I'm a sap, but I like a lot of those gimmicky proposal things. He's taking the time to plan it out and, like he explained, he doesn't want to spend a lot of money because that worries her. Whenever your guy thinks of you and takes time to try to figure out something that will make you happy, it's romantic. No matter how big of a goofball he is, it's still romantic.

My best friend loves movies and she'd loved to be proposed to at a movie theater, so I agree in that sense. If it's something the girl really really likes then it's not necessarily a bad idea. Although I'd still nix doing it at sporting events :-P

I was thinking about the sporting events proposals. Seems like the guys who do those just want everybody to know that they're proposing. It sort of says "I love you and I'm proud of it." The girls ought to just shout "MAYBE!" and have fun with it.

A few weeks ago my sweetie proposed in a Wal-Mart parking lot. But that was okay since he knew ahead of time that I'd say no.

Uhm, what's so wanky about proposing in a more unusual situation? The romantic thing might be fine for some people, but others might think that would be boring. You know, personal taste...If the two are into DDR, why the hell not?

Ok, well imagine this instead: A writer proposes to his girlfriend in the middle of his latest fanfic. A bad one. About Professor Snape making Ron do some "extra credit".

This is not too different. Not only is the idea... well.. Dumb, but he's going about it the wrong way, too.

(I'm the anon from earlier...) I don't see how this is the same at all. He's suggesting doing something they both like, then proposing. How's writing tasteless fanfic compare to doing something they like?? Even if it's a silly idea... o__O;
This isn't wank, it's just weird.

YMMV, but what bothers me most about the idea is that it melds something permanent and life-altering to something so immensely trivial. (no offense to DDR players; all games are trivial in a way, and I say this as an avid nerd gamer.)

This is all opinion, of course. I guess to some people knee-planting an arcade machine in front of a bunch of strangers while backed by J-pop is the most deep and romantic possible gesture anyone could possibly make.

But that doesn't mean I can't goggle at it and wonder WTF, right?

Yeah, you can goggle at it and wonder 'WTF.' That's your right, and I'm doing it too, to an extent. It's weird as hell, I'll admit. I'm not seeing the wank, though--I'm just seeing a guy trying to come up with a fun, inexpensive (if bizarre) way to propose. Uuuhm...?

I gotta agree with Slippery Fish and the Anon here, just because it seems silly and trivial to you doesn't mean that other people feel the same.

I honestly think things like pinics and carriage rides are horribly cliche and trival, I'd rather have a guy propose when we're doing something we both enjoy than to have him basically act out a script on what people think is romantic.

IMO of course.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel.
I mean, my husband proposed to me at the archery competition of the local ren fair.
It seemed stupid to some of our people but it was something we both loved and had a lot of
wonderful memories attached to it. It made a special thing even more special and much more personal.

I think it has to be tailored to what you and your S.O. like or it's not really romantic, anyway. If a guy just follows a list of stuff that's supposed to be romantic, it's just rote and it doesn't feel like it's from the heart.

Of course if a guy aims for romantic but ends up doing something that he likes and she doesn't, it's sort of like giving your Mom a baseball glove for her birthday.

This is not quite as wanky as Victoria Bitter/Mister Frodo using Sean Astin (and a script delivered to SA) to propose to Orangeblossom but it's in there. I had to laugh at the "what if she says no" scenarios. I personally would kill a man who made one of those major public proposals. My boyfriends knew it and proposed in private (better I think for both parties in case the proposee says no. Avoids public humiliation).

Someone up by my sister's in Northern Wisconsin rented a billboard and had "Sarah T, will you marry me? Love, Jeff M." put on it. It stayed like that for twenty years with the paper fading and peeling. Someone climbed up there and in spray paint tagged, "Did she say yes?".

Unless, of course, you're a sadist (which I am), and would enjoy the public humiliation of your partner. And if you're lucky enough to have a masochist for a lover, they'll probably enjoy being told "no" too.

1. If he's going to do a kneeplant like that, odds are he's going to break either his knee or the machine. I'm voting for the knee. That's a stupid move, and if he's never freestyled before he's gonna fuck it up.

2. The only song worth proposing to is the Specials' "Little Bitch." Anyone who disagrees with me is wrong and also a Nazi like the ones we had back in high school who made fun of me for dancing in the hallways just because they were jealous and also lesbians.

(Also, I like that site's machine locator. And sometimes I post there to complain about my RedOctane. But otherwise, SAD und WANKY. Did you see the post where they decided that putting DDR on the X-Box is going to kill the game completely? I wonder if maybe it'll erase all the arrows on all the PS versions or something.)
