IMDb wank!
From the Last Samurai boards: jmagnolia tells us that "I am a samurai!" to which he gets the response "You are a queer!" Meanwhile, other users make fun of the samurai by saying they're superheroes while another person says "I accept your challenge of a duel, u delusional maniac. Mabye i can beat u sane." Fun for the whole family.

Love the guy who keeps posting to the effect of 'I'm a professional student of Japanese culture and have seen 700 Japanese film! Phear my leet skillz!!!1'

He's so wonderfully pretentious.

Yeah, I thought the thread itself would just decline into "Am not!" "Are too!" but the arguments on Japanese history became an eloquent version of "I know more than you so there nyah!" which was also pretty funny.

Yes, and the way he kept popping up in every goddamn thread was really special.

"SMAMURIA U=FAG!"

"Totally, and as a Ph.D. I can clearly state that you have spelled 'samurai' wrong. Also, let's talk about Musashi for a while."

CLEARLY you have no understanding of Japanese history. I bet you can't even read the hiragana on the back of a Pocky box! Even retarded foreign monkeys know better than to trust English translations of anything Japanese. Please go away and leave the smart people to their discussion.

Also, Musashi is ALSO the name of a Pokemon character. Which you would know if you'd been as immersed in Japanese pop culture as I am."

No, but I do plead guilty of being a professional academic, and capable of being amazingly wanky when people get facts in my specialty wrong. :)

And to forestall the whines of 'stop being anonymous!' I have very little presence on the Net, but I guess I'll look for a code or something so as to be indentified.

I liked when Our Samurai proved that he knew more about being a warrior than the alleged Japanese scholar, who'd spouted off a ton of lit. references, by saying, "Have you even seen the film Ghost Dog, Way of the Samurai? That might put things in perspective for you."

Bahahahahaha.

I'm just wondering how much Southern Comfort a person needs to drink to watch Ghost Dog and think that he's seeing an unequivocal endorsement of the samurai lifestyle.

I assume he must have stolen his mom's supply.

I have a desperate urge to reply to the "You are such a queer" post with a long-winded response on how real-life historical samurai often had sexual relationships with those of the same gender, complete with academic quotes and half-supported historical references and a list of related movies, just to get into the spirit of the thing. Fun!

Okay, saw Gohatto today. Some thoughts:

Kano was almost too pretty. Like, to the point that I stopped thinking, "Damn, he fine," and started thinking, "Oh no that bitch di'int bite my favorite shade of eyeshadow!" He did, however, have a lot more spirit and personality than most of the reviews I read gave him credit for.

Okita? DROOOOOOL. Just the right side of androgynous to melt my butter, and less childish-looking than the cartoon version. He did have that delightful smile and infectious laugh, but had his serious moments as well; I actually believed this guy was capable of leading a troop of samurai. (I also loved it when he and Hijikata got into a bitchfight over Kano. Hee.)

Hijikata did a great job with what could have been a purely expository role. He wasn't as pretty as Aoshi (although fortunately much less whiny), but don't let's ask for the moon.

It's hard to explain, but for some reason the movie had a very... French feel to it. Not in a bad way, mind you, just in terms of pacing and characterization and what have you. I'm glad I saw it, anyway, and thanks for the recommendation!

You know, my grasp of Japanese culture is somewhat limited, but I feel like I read somewhere that this idea of what a samurai was (is) is about on par with our contemporary portrayal of "knights in shining armor": more myth than reality. The reality being far less romantic.

Then again, I'm not a professional scholar. =P

But I just had to add my pennies worth, not least because somebody mentioned the magic word "Musashi". Hmmm. Yummy. Currently screening on NHK is a series based on this character (who is not wholly fictional) and the guy who plays Musashi is HOT. But that's not the point. I wanted to share a tale I have of drunken japanese men in Tokyo bars. I was watching TV one night and there was a programme on where they showed drunk people in Tokyo saying hello in whatever way they pleased infront of a camera. So, one bloke came up and bowed very low and said "I am Endo Koichi [or likewise Japansese name], samurai-extraodinaire !" [my translation, hence i'm probably twisting the truth]. To which the crowd burst into fits of laughter. The poor mite seemed quite offended. But it made me think, just how much Japanese would laugh at a foreigner for saying he was a samurai. Awww. It's just sad really.
