Entry tags:fandom: bands, usenet wank

In the spirit of the last post . . .
If anyone ever wants Usenet wank, few newsgroups can compare to alt.music.monkees.

The backstory is pretty simple: It was once touted as "the friendliest place in cyberspace" and two of the Monkees even posted there back in the mid 90s. But in the last year or so it's become a magnet for all the disgruntled whackos who've been kicked out of every decent, moderated forum. The oldbies are long gone, now, and at AMM the nuts can't be removed, which accounts for the cesspool status it enjoys today.

Amongst the Linda vs. Sarah/Jan/Jennifer/Samantha threads you'll find paranoid ramblings about who's f**ked (insert band member's name here--usually Peter Tork), trolls flooding over from other groups and posting threads about scrotums, and every now and again the rarest of all: the on-topic thread.

It's wank that comes with a terrible price, though: the sanity of anyone who goes there who isn't insane to begin with.

Usenet -- where they seperate the wheat from the chaff... and keep the chaff.

LOL! These folks don't even qualify as chaff--most of the above mentioned parties are more "fertilizer."

That reminds me--a couple years back, I kept reading about how the Monkees were, LIEK, SOOOO HOTT1!!!111, and I said in an essay on my old website that, while I thought they were good, they weren't the greatest thing since sliced bread. This one girl wrote in her blog, "I don't think I want to be friends with her anymore." Never mind that 1) we weren't friends in the first place, and 2) she's currently on a domain that's named after a Journey song.

I am one of those Monkees fans that completely accepts that not everyone is into it. That's why there are so many fandoms to choose from. I love HP, but I seriously doubt I could get as rabid as some of my friends are about it.

But yeah, I've seen people tear into each other--ESPECIALLY over which Monkee is cuter/better/is a better singer/better musician. Simple observations, like the one that Davy Jones can't sing any more (he can't), have led to flame wars.

Much ado about nothing, if you ask me.

Totally.

And also, this was at the height of teen-pop fandom, and I said that teenyboppers are teenyboppers, no matter what bands they're into. (I remember getting shit for that at a message board one time because I said that regarding Limp Bizkit et al.) These people were bashing people for the same feelings they had about other artists. In my eyes, hating teen-pop does not automatically disqualify one from being a teenybopper. For one thing, I know for a fact I was a teeny over Gavin Rossdale back in the day. (And yes, NKOTB a few years or so before that.)

A great deal of Monkees fans are teenyboppers, even the ones who are well into their thirties and forties. But I've seen many fans who keep their adoration both under control and in perspective, and the word teenybopper is a misnomer when applied to them. I spent three days last March trying NOT to be a teenybopper in front of Peter Tork. I suppose the reactions stem from the fact that the word has such a negative connotation to it.

But then again, the Monkees is a weird fandom to be in. The sense of time is really skewed.

Probably not. There's no moderation of any kind (at least on AMM). It's like being a gladiator.

Without Russell Crowe to latch on to, either.

Yup. I started out on Usenet, and got my first death threat within six weeks of ever being online (It was for saying that Garak could possibly be gay).
