Talking about dredging up the past...remember all the angst when Gary Oldman cast as Sirius? All cries of "He's not cute enough! He doesn't have the rugged good looks and the pustules that ooze male sexuality? Where's the bulging biceps and the gigantic throbbing d-"

There was sobbing, wailing and the sound of a thousand keyboards misspelling words and replacing all the letter c's with k's!

But that's not all! There's the inability to tell apart shoddy photoshop with high end posters! There's endless barrages of "I hope you jump of a cliff!" And more! Go forth, boggle:

Well, I've watched the trailer that's out for it, and while Sirius doesn't fit my personal mental image of him, I've long ago accepted that movies aren't going to catet to me personally. n.n

(btw, my marriage proposal is still open to whoever it was in [info]tws_support (was it [info]banal_o_rama?) who suggested that Warner Brothers just graft in a cell-animated mangafied Sirius and Remus.)

OMG!! i totally agree with MRS BLACK...when i found out gary oldman was going to play sirius, i was kinda shocked...i wanted johnny depp to play him!! he is one fine guy...and he looks young for his age....but gary is an ok looking guy, its only a pic of him here...he may look a little better in the movie...so yeah...i was just really happy when someone wanted johnny to play sirius, cuz i thought i was the only one who thought depp was good-looking...COOL BEANS MRS BLACK!!!!

If there are people who can't tell that picture's a fake, then I weep for the future of the human race. HONESTLY, PEOPLE!

I personally think Oldman looks too good in those shots - the book indicates waist-length hair, skin pulled tight and gaunt - and I think they're probably actually playing to the older fangirl crowd with the scruffy yet will-look-just-fine-after-a-shower Sirius they've got here. Blah.

Between the person saying Harry wasn't afraid of Sirius (wtf?) and the ones wishing Oldman would break his legs so they'd have to "recast snuffles" -- oh, gee, *how* much of the film is already in the can? -- this makes me want to run loose with a deadly weapon. You know what's even weirder to me than people complaining about Gary Oldman's "ugliness"? People saying that David Thewlis isn't "sexy" enough to play Lupin. Because while I remember reading about Sirius being handsome before his time in Azkaban, I really don't recall J.K. Rowling ever describing Remus' middle-aged paunch rock-hard abs, his scruffy werewolf fur flowing locks of thick, silky hair, and the manly scent of dog-breath testosterone he exuded wherever he went...
Then again, I'm not exactly free of wank myself; I must confess, I have been known to bitch about how Alan Rickman is too fat and old isn't ugly enough to play Snape. *hangs head in shame*

As to all those people who think Sirius should be good-looking despite having been in a place many wizards consider to be hell on Earth (just ask Hagrid)... YOU spend 10+ years in a prison like Azkaban, where I doubt the inmates have access to even the most basic amenities, and see how you look when you get out. (Bet you'll reek to high heaven too...)

Still, Gary Oldman is a marvellous actor, and it is his portrayal of Sirius I'm interested in, not how flipping "cute" he is.

This reminds me of a slighty wanky thread that took place at my LJ last Friday (I'm including my username, but it's in Spanish). Don't know about you, I am a Sirius/Remus shipper BUT I'm perfectly glad with the casting (I prefer good actors over sexy boys who doesn't know how to act, thank you very much. Besides, we're talking about a poor werewolf and an escape convict, not about a couple of biseinen).

I was so frustrated that "asked" everybody who thought that David Thewlis' appearance was more important than anything else (like, er... the plot) to be coherent and don't go to watch the movie. (I mean, you don't like something in a movie, it's not like you're being forced to go and see it).

Basically, the most amusing responses I got was that "JK NEVER said that Remus had a NAZI mustache!" and that, of course, I obviously "thought that all S/R shippers are onanists that want to watch the movie on a Friday night so they can imagine Oldman fucking Thewlis". (pardon my language, it's a translation)

Repeat with me: WTF?
Some HP fangirls scare me.

Oh sweet jesus, this was one of the stupidest of all stupid wanks from the beginning and it JUST WON'T DIE, DAMMIT *beats with stick*

Exhibit A: Gary Oldman in Dracula. Flawed movie, excellent performance, and incidentially immeasurable attractiveness in a top hat and suit. Try telling me that ain't cool enough for Sirius with a straight face.

Exhibit B: Twelve years trapped in a prison infested by the physical embodiments of clinical depression, underfed and well-treated. He's not going to be a Ken doll, and why should he be? Sirius is (well, was) despite his flaws and limitations as a character, brave, loving and loyal. Why the hell isn't that enough for the fangirls?

The choicest line for me was I think It's awful! it's hidious, Serious looks nothin like that! he's suposed to be good looking!
Yeah. Helps to spell the characters' names right, dear.

I know, you'll all laugh, but up till today I honestly thought the goofy "omg he's sooo hottt luv 4EVA!!!11!!!" nonsense was everyone making fun of the silly children, and being snarky. I didn't truly believe, till reading the drivel on that page, that anyone could actually communicate that way and mean it. I weep for the future.

On the other hand, it does provide quite a bit to mock. Yes, I think the poster if fake. But dreadlocks would make sense. I sincerely doubt bathing facilities are available at Azkaban. All those years of being there, I'm surprised he doesn't look 80. There were reports of POW's in WWII who left the POW camps with what little hair they had left snow white, and actually looking as if they were elderly. JK clearly states that Sirius was "once handsome". Not that he was, at the point in which he is introduced as a characater, yummy.

As far as Lupin, David Thewlis is one of the most brilliant actors I've ever encountered. He also has had a hard life, and anyone who thinks he's going to be dropdead gorgeous is absurd. I never pictured Remus as handsome anyway. He seemed sweet, and charming, but I assumed he was rather plain.

Meh. The posters are idiots, sure, but I don't see what's so tremendously wanky about wanting to watch hot guys. Sure, Sirius has been in prison for ten years and Remus was never described as being unbelievably gorgeous, but so what? I like hotness; I'm weird that way. I'd rather spend two hours looking at Johnny Depp and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers than at Gary Oldman and David Thewlis. What's so terrible about that?

Even if the picture is a fake, I actually still like the idea of Gary Oldman playing Sirius. Just being in regular jail for thirteen some odd years does things to you. Being in Azkaban is suicide. I'm sure he'd really come bounding out, cheeks flushed pink, hair fluffly and light, etc.

I think that part of the reason Ewan McGregor isn't Lupin is he may be too pretty. He's a great actor, but Remus's life hasn't exactly been a picnic either. Being a werewolf is no joke, so J.K. Rowling seems to tell us.

But hey, I like watching the fangirls fight. *puts down bets and sits back*
