Dude, they'll take your skin and eat it.
Canon slash is okay, but Xander is straight!

Yes, there are some good points, but did they have to pick the little black dress of Buffy slash fic? Really, anyone but Xander. There is wank a-brewing.

Just love the het shippers who insist that disagreeing with them is the same as calling them homophobes.

Peter Wingfield is 6'6 tall? He must have been kneeling down at the con where I saw him. Many of the women were as tall as he was, and a 6'6 woman would have been just a tad inconspicuous.

But hey, don't let the facts (that he's just under 6') spoil a good rant. When she learns how to spell bisexual, then we can work on her spatial perception.

Xander, so in denial about the boy loving. Mmmm mmm.

And you posted this here why? Your comment implies what's not there. It's a mature discussion; no wank, move along.

Sorry, but this post smacks of an attempt to stir shit up.

The wank would be in the comments primarily. For instance: the assumption that because someone is posting about not liking slash, rabid slash fans are going to descend screaming 'homophobe!'

And as for stirring shit up, I have no idea who the OP is. I've never read his or her journal before, and I have no agenda in this fandom. Why would I bother?

um, as someone who has little interest in the Buffyverse or the OP and doesn't particularly care if that fandom eats itself or not, it always strikes me as a bit wanky when someone feels the need to tell a sizable portion of the fandom that They're Getting It All Wrong, and trots out Real Life Litera-toor to prove they are t3h sMrT. If you don't get slash--don't read it, then, nobody's making you. If there's a poverty of good het!Xander, p'raps writing would be more to the point in filling the void than typing long pseudo-scholarly essays about why the people who don't are misguided.

The wank, to me, lies in the fact that this is someone telling the fandom what they can and cannot write according to thier preferences.

Don't think Xander's gay, don't read fics where he's schupping Spike/Angel/Wesely.

I not much for Xanderslash myself but I'm not gonna tell the fandom to stop writing about it because it ain't my thing.

Well I honestly never thought Xander was gay, but to be honest I spent a great deal of the series wanting to bitch-slap the little bugger so I'm proably don't have a very objective stance.

However the arguments proposed here are horribly weak. Buffy has far more reason to hate vamps than Xander does and yet she's been involved with two of 'em.

Not to mention I guess I missed the part where we can slash characters who flamboyantly gay.

That should be 'we can only slash characters that are flamboyantly gay'.

Do we decline 'to gay' something like:

I gay
You gay
We gay

I have gayed
He has gayed
We have gayed

Examples of usage

'Elijah Wood empahtically denied today that he had ever intentionally gayed at all, and never gayed with a person of the same or opposite sex.'

'Xander would never gay with Angel or Spike, because he is resolutely heterosexual, but he would gay with Willow because she used to gay with Tara. But on the whole, he didn't really like gaying, which is why he called the marriage off with Anya.'

Yes, I can see it now.

I don't get the people who think Xander could be gay. He always seemed the least likely... He didn't have the "OMG I'm not gay" responses that Andrew did...he seems to like to hook up with demon women...and seems the most likely to be the stereotypical, drinking beer and watching football American guy.

I guess writers might slash him to make him more interesting...but...

Even if they were ambiguous about the sexuality in the first three seasons, Xander was definitely played up as Mr. Joe Average, with his 9-5 construction job, engagement, and lack of super powers.

I think he's honestly boringly average to balance out the cast.

Except now we can call him cyclops. *sniffle*

Meh... this is pretty tame as these discussions go. If you think being a hetshipper is inherently wanky, then that's your POV, but this ground is so very, very, very well trodden that it takes a good shrieking war to get me actually interested in slogging through another one of these.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. We need a licensing system for fanfic. I'm sick of stumbling over love scenes that are written using, evidently, an alien anatomy book for a guide, or stories that have Giles talking like a sixteen-year-old chat room veteran. I'm sick of people who whine that Giles really lusts after Buffy, honestly he does, and point to the part of "The Prom" where he speculates that ice cream is appropriate. Frankly, B/G shippers creep me out in general, because Giles never displayed the slightest interest in Buffy.

okay. Is anyone else confused as to exactly what this rant has to do with slash being bad characterization? doesn't it rather point to the fact that bad characterization can happen everywhere, since the pairing here is het?

The tragic thing is, there is some argument over whether Set was really bisexual and putting the moves on his nephew or whether the writer of 'The Contendings of Horus and Set' was a big dirty slasher and added that into the orignal story. (Personally, I just think that the author was on crack, but it was pretty damn entertaining crack.) Because, like, that so wasn't there in the Pyramid Texts!!111!
