Woah.
Peter A. (I don't know his middle name and truly can't bring myself to care) David is sort of the professional Fandom Whore (tm). You liked it, he probably was connected to it in some obscure fashion. Star Trek? Writer for the show, a few thousand books including the insipid Imzadi business that I salivated over when I was younger. He writes comic books as well, Supergirl, Young Justice, the incredibly wanky Captain Marvel with an even wankier runs on Hulk and Aquaman. You can check out his bibliography here to see if he has visited your fandom as well.

He's a fan's fan, a fan's writer, a fan about town. He does weekly updates on what he's seen (Smallville, West Wing, Angel, etc.), read (ie comics), or heard (waaaaaank). It's kind of interesting to hear about the (comic)industry from someone so immersed in it but duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude can he get defensive sometimes.

He recently wrote a Supergirl story about how Mary Marvel (Ms. Marvel) gets groped by a police officer. Other than being wonderfully 'topical' it was pretty damn benign. 'Course comic_fen are all sorts of crazy and we get a delightful threat of:

"Say one more bad thing about my friend of over seven years and I'll hire a hooker to help me push you over. Really, it's true. There will be a reckoning...."

This appalls our dear PAD prompting him to post about the "threat" invoking possibly many a law with a:
"And you don't have to be worried that you'll be standing at a convention holding your one year old daughter in your arms, chatting with someone, and suddenly some guy is going to come up to you and take a shot at you and he misses you and you're standing there covered in your child's blood.".

PAD, really. ::shakes head::

He continues to fume about the Beatles, Catcher and the Rye and the Perils of Teh Internet over at the Apology thread that's a hoot and a half.

"...we live in a world where a nut found inspiration in "Catcher in the Rye" to go murder a Beatle. I felt it necessary to underscore that, while some of you seem to be laboring under the pleasant delusion that you're a handful of fun guys sitting in somebody's living room, you're actually on an open forum, God knows who's reading your comments, and God knows what they might be prompted to do as a result."-PAD

Someone picks up on the inherent silliness of such a comparison with a:

"Later you mention that "we live in a world where a nut found inspiration in "Catcher in the Rye" to go murder a Beatle." May I suggest that if Joe is to be held responsible for what other people might do because of what he wrote, then shouldn't J.D. Salinger be held responsible for Mark David Chapman's actions?

Of course not." -Jim

To which PAD responds with a:

"Did "Catcher in the Rye" suggest that a person should stand outside the Dakota hotel at a particular time and day because it'd be a good chance to nail John Lennon? No? Then no, Sallinger shouldn't be held responsible." -PAD

There is so. much. more. it's not even funny. Go, wade through and boggle. I'm gonna go back to my high stack of Young Justice comics and giggle some more...

As I love Peter David (or, I did when I was 12 and Star Trek-obsessed. I haven't read any of his books in awhile), this makes me very sad.

The Catcher thing defied logic.

Okay, lemeee see if I can figure this out.

1. PAD wrote a Story.
2. Fan got offended by said Story, threatend PAD in some manner.
3. PAD responds, saying that because he's seen people get threatened and hurt before by crazy fans, he feels like he should take it seriously.
4. Fan apoligizes.
5. PAD accepts, reluctantly.

7. Some references to crazy people being inspired by stories are made.
8. Some OTHER fan suggests that PAD implied that Salinger was responsible for crazy people using Catcher in the Rye as a reason to kill someone.
9. PAD says he meant otherwise.

Okay, how in the name of little green applies is this wank by PAD? He seemed pretty darn reasonable to me.

Yeah, I'm really not seeing the wank in this.

(But as is extremely apparent from reading the beginning of the post, dafnap really doesn't like Peter David.)

Actually, I heart Peter David a whole lot, but the guy is wanky and I was just pointing out the wank. Reading over the post it does look like I hold a big ole' grudge or something but fact is I loved his Young Justice, his New Frontier books and pretty much almost everything he did. They guy had a pretty genius Supergirl run and Captain Marvel can be pretty awesome at times. But a lot of things can be awesome and still generate insane amounts of wank.

I respect his opinion on a lot of issues but when he implies that people should watch what the write because other crazy people might take it all homicidal, my wank-o-meter starts to twirl.

I can't argue whether or not the fan can be that psycho or stalker-y. But the whole "you better be careful with what you write who knows who can be reading it"?

Seems wanky.

But that could just be me.

My take is I think he was trying to say that emotionally disturbed people are gonna find 'inspiration' wherever they look. Be it a movie, a comic book, or a can of tuna.

Or basically if someone deranged is gonna twist a completely innocent story into justification for some horrible action then there's really not a lot that can be done.

My take I could be wrong, and I'm pretty wacked on cold medication right now.

I think if there is wank, it’s in his decision to make a big deal online about the threat, especially in restating his fears in terms far more graphic than the original threat. If he is worried about a crazy fan out there reading comments, then it’s probably not a good idea to add to the stock of available images of “PAD + blood”.

I'm not saying he’s wrong to be concerned about what happened, but he’s chosen to deal with this in a way that makes the thing that he fears more likely rather than less - and to me that is wanky.

sorry, I've been to several of the conventions that PAD frequents - some of the biggest in the country.
He has a pretty legitimate fear there.
I've been stalked all over a convention, and all I did was enter the masquerade (good thing the makeup was heavy enough that the guy didn't recognize me out of it - but the day I was wearing it was pretty uncomfortable at points, and I don't mean physically).

I'm not talking about his fear, which may or may not be legitimate (covered in your child's blood is a bit much.) I'm talking about the implication that someone should watch what they write because the wrong person may be reading. That's wank material.

Once again, I really don't think that's what he was saying.

It was justification for taking a threat seriously.

It wasn't "Watch what you write, because people are stupid."

I believe it was "Hey, people are stupid, they've done these stupid things, I have to take this seriously."

I can see the logic in his argument, but oftentimes lots of wanks arise out of the missappropriation of language for a legitimate concern. Also:

"Did "Catcher in the Rye" suggest that a person should stand outside the Dakota hotel at a particular time and day because it'd be a good chance to nail John Lennon? No? Then no, Sallinger shouldn't be held responsible."

Uhh, Salinger should only be held responsible for pissing a load of high school and college students off for reading his work. That explanation seems a bit wanky to me, instead of just saying "There are nut jobs out there, so I may have to take such an offhanded threat seriously" he goes into the long-fapping territory of book/media influencing violent behaviors and shoots down posters rather arrogantly for asking to clarify things like above.

Although, I would love to run at a con screaming "Hulk Smash!" and say it was his "What Savage Beast" novel that made me do it.

Uh, I think the high school and college teachers deserve some blame for that. Salinger only wrote the (admittedly REALLY REALLY IRRITATING) book. They forced people to read it.

See, that's not what I took away from that at all. What he's saying is that he felt the need to defend himself, so that people don't think he takes this kind of thing lying down. I don't think it's his wisest response ever, but most of us can relate to the response as being pretty human. Since someone threatening him in person GENUINELY would constitute a threat to his two small children because he takes them everywhere, I still don't see what's wanky about this. Frankly, it just kind of looks like you brought a personal grudge against a BNF over here. Heh.

Me, too. I've met Peter David in person and he DOES travel with his 2 little girls *everywhere* to all the different conventions. At Dragon Con he spent all 4 days with his very cute baby strapped to his back, and his 8 yo sitting by his side and selling her artwork =) A nicer, more educated and reasonable man you really couldn't meet. If *I* were a public figure who frequently made appearances with my children and someone threatened to kill me at my next public appearance, you can bet your sweet Moses that I'd freak the fuck out.

I also don't see what's "wanky" about posting what he thinks about various fandoms. He does so in a very personal, conversational way, sure, but it's not wanky in and of itself.

Finally, he's never written any Star Trek episodes, although he HAS written the world's most famous Mary Sue: Captain Mackenzie Calhoun of the Star Trek: New Frontier series. I adore that series, though, and think it's better than anything Trek has put on my screen, big or small, in years. I also don't understand how his writing in The Hulk or Captain Marvel constitutes wank. Mr. David basically does what we'd all love to do: write excellent world-renown fanfiction for a living. =)

PAD's only crime here seems to be a minor penchant for melodramatic phrasing, but given the fact that he perceived this as a real threat to his kids, I think it's pretty understandable. *shrug*

Me, I just knew the guy from his Disney princess parody and had no idea he was famous until my comic fan friend pointed it out. And thanks to this thread I now know my father had been reading his books the whole time as well. I feel kinda dumb now.

So, anyway, I think he was being a bit overdramatic, but I can't really blame him if his friends have had such bad experiences with psycho fans. Now if Cassie Claire had written this, it would be wanky...

Yes, after PAD wrote, and TMcF illustrated, Incredible Hulk #340, the one with the "greatest" Hulk/ Wolverine fight. I didn't think much of that issue, really, and think Todd McFarlene is pretty overrated. I'm pretty sure TMcF, and not PAD, is the one who also has bad blood with Erik Larsen.

Could be both -- Erik Larsen could batter through mountains with his opinions, bless him -- but I know for certain that PAD, at least, has traded written bitchslaps with Erik. Started with PAD making an a comment to the effect that Savage Dragon, Mr. Larsen's main super-hero, is nothing more than the Hulk with a fin on his head. Exception was taken, and so began the spat. I think they've buried the hatchet in recent years, though.
