If DomLij and Sean Astin were both drowning...
I dunno, this totally looks like wank to me. But I may be too insanely furious about the whole Datalounge idea that Sean Astin is a evil homophobe to be able to judge it properly.

Who should be saved?

I'm too inebriated at present to make the call for wankery, but damn, I love your headline. I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats.

Lulinda delved into the pit of iniquity and came up with some nice juicy Sean hate. Note the link on the first comment, which lead to....

... a backlash from the anti-Sean-HaTeRZ. Links to these can be found here.

Then Undone calls for whirled peas. (note: I've been informed that this is not wanky. It's included for educational purposes only.)

More kerfluffle available on request. This is a big'un.

The phrase "disingenuous at best" is used so often in any sort of LJ kerfluffle that it sort of calls for it's own acronym.

(Plus "disingenuous" is hard to spell.)

I am an anti-Sean-HaTeR. Can my life get any better? *laughing*

Oh yeah... and I've been pegged as a troll on DL even though I do NOT go there. *laughing* Apparently my words are turning up over there or someone else has the same sentiment as me. Either way, it's fine with me. Anyone who has a clue about me would know that I would post with my name. I don't care to be anonymous anywhere at all. And I happen to love my name.

But of course, it has to be me over there because there is no one else in this fandom who feels the way that I do.

Yeah. Right.

Do you have any ideas as to why the Sean hate started in the first place?

As far as I can tell, he hasn't done anything hateful. But then, I don't believe "insider" posts. Perhaps I need to adjust my tinfoil hat.

Honestly, there is nothing about what they are doing that you can apply any sort of logic to.

It was recently brought to my attention that by not wanting hateful rumors to be spread about Sean Astin and speaking out about them it means that you are against the Dom/Elijah love. (Never mind that you may have stated in, oh... every post that you've written that you like the idea of Dom and Elijah together and you think it would be a good thing. If they were gay, of course. And they liked one another.)

If you are able to make sense of that equation, I would appreciate it because the person who attempted to teach it to me did a very poor job.

Sean has committed the horrible crime of being straight, married, clean-cut and pro-army. Plus, even though he's straight he loves the other guys and gives them hugs.

Naturally he's an anathema at Datalounge.

I almost didn't even want to click on that, since it's a Free Republic link (those guys are whacked, yo). But I did, and I liked this quote from Sean: "I learned from reading about Vietnam that no matter what you think politically about certain deployments, as a good citizen and a patriot it's your duty to appreciate that there are soldiers using their lives on your behalf as a citizen."

Not, you know, the most eloquent statement ever, but a nice thought.

Yeah, there seems to be a huge failure to communicate whenever we go into any conflict.

I think that the peace activists have the best of intentions and do represent democracy at work. We should make informed choices about when to go to war. If we send guys out to kill and be killed, it ought to be for something important and not just for big money interests or because of some phantom fear of an ideology different from our own.

However peace activists sometimes want to clump all non-activists together and see them as warmongers. It's sort of a "if you aren't with us you're against us" thing, and usually has no logical basis.

As far as most of the guys in the military, they're just people and they have individual opinions about whether a conflict is just or not. However they know that at some point they have to set aside their personal views and do their jobs.

You'll see a lot of resentment from military families against the peace activists, but I think that's a personal thing. Soldiers are asked to risk their lives, and they do get killed. The risks and the losses are personal to all soldiers and all military families. When they see peace activists saying that lives were risked and lost for an unworthy cause, then it hurts. However worthy the cause, their loyalty is real and they would simply like for that to be respected.

There always seems to be an air of befuddlement on both sides. Peace activists get frustrated that the military guys don't realise that they're trying to save lives all around. The military folk get frustrated that the sacrifices they're making aren't respected. IMO, we could use more people in the middle to help both groups see that there isn't that much difference between them.

Could the difference perhaps be that "Save Our Sean" is firmly tongue in cheek? That the people running the 'campaign' and making the icons are responding to the Sean hate more or less by pointing out the lunacy, not thinking anything they do actually makes a difference in Sean's life, or that Sean need their help?

I was thinking that the difference was that the "Save Sean" folks wanted actual people (LJ users) to stop doing something they are </i>actually</i> doing (talking smack about Sean), while the "Save DomLij" folks want imaginary people (PR devils) to stop doing something that they imagine is happening (oppressing poor DomLij, who are very sad because they can't come out of the closet).

Maybe that's just me.

I try to distinguish the nuts by referring to them as Domlijah4eva fans, as opposed to the sane people who like the DomLijah RPS pairing. But I probably haven't been as diligent about making that distinction as I should.

We should come up with a snappy sobriquet for the hardcore tru believas, because it's an undeserved smear on DomLijah fans AND the Datalounge website when we refer to rumor-mongers using those words. Most DomLijah fans are perfectly sane, even the ones who believe they might really be together, and Datalounge is a huge active site which just has the bad luck to host the DomLijah4eva rumor-mongers' threads.

"Tinfoil hat crowd" is fun, but too long and requires some backstory. Anyone got a better idea?
