If the movie isn't out yet, can it have a fandom?
never posted before, but this looked like something that belonged, maybe it doesn't...
So some bright person comes up with the idea to jump on the historical movies bandwagon, and make a movie about Hannibal- the General, not the cannibal. They decide to cast Vin Diesal as Hannibal.
You would expect discussion as to Vin D. playing Hannibal. Not too wanky, all agree- bad idea.

Of course with every historical movie, you attract the history buffs.
Therin lies the wank.
Scroll down a page and watch the Neo Punic wars begin as LONG LIVE ROME barcelona takes on... well everyone else on the topic of who was greater, Hannibal or Scipio Africanus. Chock full of capslock, insult flinging and a person who never gives sources, then demands everyone else gives sources, but refuses to read them. Confused yet? Even those who start out level headed end up joining in the flinging of historically based insults (you carthaginian baby killler!) and the sig battle by replying to LONG LIVE ROME with various pro- carthaginian sig "shouts" and eventually the incorporation of net speak, as barcelona refuses to do anything but restate its argument over and over and over instead of actually replying.

*snerk* I didn't even get 1/4 of the way through that one. I love it when the academics wank though. (I fully admit I'm a bit of an academic myself but this just makes me laugh and laugh.)

If I may mock point out my favorite little bits... (thus far).

Read - "Scipio Africanus, greater than Napoleon", by Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart. Here is the book and potential screenplay for the real makings of a Roman epic.

Yeah. That sounds like a great read. Better than valium. "Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart" I don't read anything by anyone with more than four words in their name. I have the feeling that screenwriters tend to stay away from stuff like that too. Alright, so I even took the liberty of looking the book up on Amazon.com. Despite very high ratings and the fact that I actually do like reading history books... here's an excerpt from page 14: Scipio's next brief entry on the stage of history is in a different scene. His elder brother, Lucious, was a candidate for the aedileship and the younger Publius "for long did not venture to stand for the same office as his brother But on the approach of the election, judging from the disposition of the people that his brother had a poor chance of being elected, and seeing that he himself was exceedingly popular, he came to the conclusion that the only means by which his brother would attain his object would be by their coming to an agreement and both of them making the attempt......."

A recent Military History Website Poll shows Alexander the Great on top, followed by Scipio Africanus. Scipio is cleary the greater Man and Warrior compared to a thug like Hannibal.

Now we all know you can trust those website polls. But seriously, when did anyone other than Tolkien start capitalizing 'Man'? Did I miss something? Warrior, too. I don't remember having to capitalize that.

Look! Credentials! (And he's too cool to spell "respectfully.") This of course makes everything he says the absolute truth. I can start signing my posts "Rebecca-Sama, rocket scientist." Physics boards, here I come!

Nothing here but a lengthy bunch of unsubstantiated trash. A lot of mumbo jumbo. Hard to read or follow.......obviously written by a barbarian and enemy of Rome.

Barbarian...enemy...of Rome... Do I even want to get into that? I also noticed how he signed all his posts LONG LIVE ROME! Well, if he's talking about the Roman Empire, I really hate to break it to him but...

This kind of reminds me of that Samuri wank what with all the academics duking it out. "Well I'M a Ph.D.!!! So there *nyah*"

Yeah- I kept resisting the urg to point out to him that rome was done and gone ages ago. The fact the he drags other people into it- just made it funnier to me. Some of the sources both sides are "claiming" are the same...

Personally, I think Vin Diesel would be great in such a role... he's a far more versatile actor than the typical movie snob gives him credit for. Ah well... I'd be willing to bet that everyone that shrieks "OMG Vin Diesel can't be Hannibal!" also shrieks "OMG DBZ is just a bunch of yelling and staring at each other!"

Indeed. I have a rather guilty fondness for Vin Diesel, and I do think he'd make a fanstastic Hannibal-- he's got that charisma down. And I was very impressed by him in Pitch Black. Jeebus, he's more than just a dumb action hero, though granted that's what he seems content to play most of the time.

And he is so attractive, dammit!

I saw Vin on some talk show way back when he was doing the circuit for Triple X. He talked about Hannibal and PBII/Riddick then, and my immediate reaction was that he'd be great.

Since then I found out that Karl Urban is going to be in Riddick and my brain has ceased to function properly. *guh*

They invoked Godwin's Law already in the third post, which is pretty damn fast even for IMDb wank.

But you have it all here, grown men flinging ridiculous insults at each other (Barbarians!), flaunting of superior knowledge and credentials, capslock abuse, child sacrifices, quoting of age-old, but very respected sources, discrediting those sources by invoking Godwin's Law once more... it's one-handed typing at its best.
