Legolas and an Ent sittin' in a tree ....
Ikyrian is traumatized by Legolas/Ent slash.

The author is not amused.

Well, maybe sort of, but really ... not.

"That your parents have sex is something you have to come to terms with if you want to come to terms with sex itself. I can't pretend to psychoanalyse you, but it seems like your idea of the superlatively weird (and thus disgusting) is specifically sexual, and that seems to posit sexuality as a site of anxiety."

YIKES!

Dude, part of the 'we can write whatever we feel like!' is 'We can be squicked by whatever squicks us'. It's not like she exclaimed how it was the most horrible thing she ever read - she said it gave her a laugh. :) I can giggle over more *obvious* pairings I don't get (Bilbo/Gandalf, anyone), afterall...

But in the end, it's all good wank fun wank.

I'm slow. Bear with me here.

>>I can't pretend to psychoanalyse you, but it seems like your idea of the superlatively weird (and thus disgusting) is specifically sexual, and that seems to posit sexuality as a site of anxiety.">>

I'm reading this as "If you're squicked by anything, you're a prude and you hate sex."

What is it supposed to mean? Seriously - I am literate, but I hate roundabout phrasing and I refuse to bother to guess what something means if it is not clear.

Yes, that's wanky.

Still, any illumination would be appreciated, because that seems like an intensely assy thing to say.

I'm having trouble remembering that I shouldn't jump around like a crackmonkey participating in a wank *of* myself, so, apologies to all, and I will try to contain myself hereafter.

The comment is in response to her previous comment, and I think it's an absolutely fair assessment of what she said.

It is very indirect and hedged wording, but that's because I'm trying precisely to refrain from saying she's a prude. I am going so far as saying that sexuality seems to be a site of anxiety (which I think is descriptively fair), and not going further.

Well at least you're not picturing Alan Titchmarsh, in his softly spoken Northern tone, explaining what happens when an Ent and an Elf wuv-each-other-vewy-vewy-much. *shudders* Especially when it involves a set of pruning shears and a compost heap...

I don't understand . . . why is this girl a prude? Because she doesn't like imagining people (or elves) having sex with trees?

*holds head* And if I don't like thinking about my parents having sex, is there something wrong with me?

Also, these people who keep popping up to scold the girl? Well, of course she should be grateful that tshe author of some fic popped up to psychoanalyze her in her personal journal. Of course. Um.

I wouldn't see Legolas/Ent sex as something that *exists* prior to my sharing of a sublime/absurd imagining. It's not, thus, subject to being known or unknown, to being right or wrong.

-

Ents, unlike your parents, don't exist, and so their having sex doesn't exist either: it's not subject to coming to terms or not coming to terms, not subject to tolerance or intolerance. A story about it doesn't have any kind of straightforward declarative force. It's a thought experiment in eroticism (hence the issue of playfulness).

-

There is a wilful absurdity aspect to it, though, that requires of a reader a willingness to teeter between credulity and incredulity. There's a whole new level of pretending on top of the existing pretending of ME, and then the pretending that shoehorns slash into ME. Most of the negative comments I get (or usually, stumble across) invoke a kind of stolid literalness, which is then projected onto the intent of the story as well, and not surprisingly the story is found to have failed. And then you have words like "wrong", which makes as much sense as saying that elves are wrong -- elves don't exist, and are not sites of morality or even knowledge per se.

Holy fucking overanalysis! Honestly, fanauthors these days. Can't they just say "It's SUPPOSED to be weird, you just can't appreciate it kthx" and be done with it anymore?

Well, Item 1: Being squicked by something is perfectly fine. We all have different preferences, and we all think different things are icky.
Item 2: Being squicked by something and discussing it in your PERSONAL JOURNAL is fine, in my book. If she had flamed the author, or been a collosal bitch about the author being some sort of pervert or miscreant, yes, then I could understand there being a problem. But adding a link and going 'lookit this, it squicked me' sounds okay to me...especially when she later admitted to finding the story not that bad.
Item 3: Trying to analyze someone simply by comments on fanfiction? That's about as intelligent as trying to stimulate your chakras by reading Highlander pr0n ^_^ and far more rude and invasive then someone discussing their knee-jerk reaction to your story within their circle of friends.

"But that's just my opinion...I could be wrong."

Wow...she's squicked by the story so the author responds by:

1) Questioning her on her age
2) Questioning her own securities about sex, because she doesn't like to think about her parents doing it? WTF?? I'm quite comfortable with sex and i don't like to picture MINE doing it, thank you.

That crap was seriously out of line, and wanky as hell. Someone doesn't like to read about Legolas and Treebeard humping so they have sexual issues? Give me a freaking break. It's called having preferences. Someone is not a freak with serious sexual issues just because they don't go for every kink out there.
