X fandom mini wank...
This thread on the X/1999 LJ community. Starts innocuously enough, a thread on the CLAMP artists taking their sweet time and not working on the manga X.

[info]mon_starling: Hell no! I think it's getting better!

mon_starling: I guess it´s just a matter of personal taste
Rainbow_gossip replies by saying that she's an ARTEEST and an art major, so her word is so much more l33t, and that Starling doesn't know anything about art! (isn't this breaking some kind of F_W rule?) *And* she "can draw<3"

And then there's the snarky/bitter little anonymous post in reply under that.<3

The mini-wank ends there, I suppose.

I was wondering when this would show up. And if there is some kind of law about saying "because I am a [blank], I know more about it!", I think mon_starling wins on the grounds that she also appears to be an artist, and has a link to her deviant art page, giving evidence. Until rainbow_gossip shows some kind of proof of her being better than mon_starling, she is not the l33t3st art33st.

I'd try to find some kind of link on Rainbow_Gossip's userinfo page, but I'm not wading through the amount of fan links.

For the curious: Mon Starling's DA

I'd say Starling "can draw<3" as well.

I have no JournalFen, but generally if you put in a personal interest, like X, Seishirou, Subaru, whatever in a search, you can pull up something on DA.

Anyway. Yeah o_o Starling is wonderful!

Even then, she shot all credibility to hell by invoking Ebert's Law, as well as dismissing mon_starling's comparison to "Sin City" because it wasn't manga and therefore not "teh cr3dibl3." (The fact that both utilized shading in a graphic novel format with emphasis on simplicity? No enough! Miller can't compete with CLAMP because he's a silly gaijin!) I had to sit on my hands for that one, because nothing encourages me to wank like someone snubbing great comics because of their stupidity.

Bah, honestly. Not having a major in art does not exclude one from discussion of art. Yes, there are people who know dick-all about art and should be quiet until they learn something, but most people know at least /something/.

Further, people who haven't had their heads filled with silly 'Art-with-a-capital-A rules' sometimes have valid insight.

Hello, my name is "BITCH" and my opinion is better than yours because me and my "fanbitch" girlfriends say so. By the way, I am an art major, which means that I am a sellout and totally piss on everything that a true artist stands for and let other people dictate to me how and what I can draw/paint/sculpt. Oh, you know, if you (fandom) knew anything at all about manga, the way me and my clique do (tee hee), you would know that CLAMP knows shit about their proportions.

First of all, they aren't making everyone and their grandmother anorexic! OMG! Can you believe that they're actually trying to convince us that Yuzuriha and Karen actually eat?! And, to make things even worse, Fuuma looks like a human being! *GASP!!* Not like a coat hanger with a whisk broom taped on the hook! How dare they take away those mega-exaggerated shoulders and itty-bitty waists! And those faces! Whatever happened to Subaru's gorgeous chin?! Why doesn't it look like Seishirou's in danger of getting his good eye poked out with it?! ARGH!! The only thing worse than taking away that ultra-severity is the fact that Kamui sincerely looks male now. How could CLAMP do that do us?! Now we can't treat gay sex like badly disguised het with Kamui as the woman. Oh, bemoan our loss!

Augh, I don't know what to say about this one. [info]rainbow_gossip is usually a very sweet girl, and I'm not ashamed to call her a friend, but I have NO idea why she went off like that. There was absolutely no reason for it whatsoever, and I actually agree with everything [info]mon_starling said, and even went over to her LJ afterwards to apologize. I don't understand how [info]mon_starling's comment could prod [info]rainbow_gossip into being so nasty for no apparent reason whatsoever.

And for the record, yes, [info]mon_starling is indeed an artist, and a /damn/ fine one at that. I've modded her tickets at Elfwood more than once. So I'd say, that if "credentials" are even RELEVENT in such a discussion, [info]mon_starling has every right to hold an opinion about CLAMP's recent art. *snort* More than every right. Fortunately, credentials mean shit. It's like those people who go, "Oh, you don't like my writing? That's probably because YOU can't write, either." That's crap.

I don't know. I just don't know. I'm still shaking my head in confusion at the sheer, uncalled for viciousness of it.

I've had a run-in with Rainbow Gossip before. She seems to think she's the CLAMP authority, and yet she can't even argue her stance coherently.

This is exactly why the X fandom freaks me out. I'm a lurker. Major lurker. I love the series to death *points to her username and smiles* but it seems like some of the more vocal people involved derive great pleasure in screaming at each other. I can't think of any other fandoms--well, anime fandoms--that wank this often. Maybe they're horny from lack of manga updates?
