Rapefic mini-wank
Over in fanfic land, rapefic is the dead horse discussion of the week.

First it starts off in fanficrants, although this particular topic is more the mood setter as opposed to actual wank.
Soon fandomcliche takes up the topic, and people are quick to point out this topic has just been covered in fanficrants. The kicker is this post by the admin of fandomcliche.

I figure if she's going to drag fandom_wank into it, I should go ahead and follow her suggestion.

I know.

I saw the link our anonymous friend dropped off (I'm on that list), and all I could think was, "how long before this one begins to blow"?

Fandom: you don't have to be psychic to predict in-coming wank.

Nothing like moderator overreaction.

I wish people wouldn't be afraid of owning their opinions, instead of blaming the big nasty people who read their PUBLIC BLOGS and, powers forbid, LINK to their PUBLIC posts so other people can discuss them.

But didn't you know? F_W is the big bad, and even a mention that a thread might be getting wanky is a threat, used to stifle discussion!

But it seems (from later comments) like they really WANT to be wanked, and would wear it as a badge of honor.

Am confuzzled.

It just won't stop (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fanficrants/166730.html)! Though at least this time they're TRYING to have a civil conversation about a particular aspect of rapefic. If I have to listen to [info]niav whine one more time about how the entire world should revolve around HER personal trauma...

You know, I think [info]niav was explaining quite reasonably and calmly why rapefics can be traumatic to rape survivors, not asking that the world revolve around her. Myabe I'm prejudiced because I think they're in extremely bad taste myself.

And this is why if you have a problem with rapefics, you avoid them at all costs, instead of implying that ALL people who write them write them because 'omg, tehy s0 h0t!' or think that they're Satan worshippers. Because I can promise you, people who do write rapefics write them for many different reasons. It's not fair to classify people who've written on the topic maturely get stuck in with the people who don't.

I didn't think the thread was that wanky, and I didn't have a problem with niav's comments until I got to this:

While I do not begrudge people a rape fantasy, it cannot be denied that it is insulting to rape survivors, like myself. As long as people keep their fantasies to themselves - or if they do wish to write about, put a clear warning on their writing - I will not grouch at them. When they force their fantasies and writings down my throat I get angry and I think I have a right to.

It's not clear to me how anyone is "forcing their fantasies and writings" down anyone's throat, and I do actually think it can be denied that having rape fantasies is insulting to rape survivors. That's like saying that I should feel personally insulted by people doing D/s, because my great-grandparents were slaves.

Just to double-check, though, I ran that by a friend of mine who is a rape survivor. She replied, "Squicky, I can see, but insulting?"

Mmhmm. This is Sapphira_angel, that particular admin mentioned in the post.

Just so you know exactly what happened and won't be misguided,

I posted my entry on the subject hoping that the discussion wouldn't filter in and take over the place. Not the smartest thing, but it was something I wanted to get out. Anyway, the next day a girl posts a rant about rape. Which was exactly what I didn't want to see and the whole reason I bitched about the topic in the first place. Sniping ensued, which was the real wank of the event. My Neechan kicked me in the ass for being a prude, I posted my notice and apology, she takes off and reposts her rant at fanficrants without so much as a word.

That's all that actually happened. Have fun tearing at it.

To be fair, the only reason I posted this is because your post almost sounded like a dare to post it to fandom_wank. I really didn't find the actual discussion/ranting especially wanky. That's why I called it a mini-wank.

Nah, I wasn't looking to be wanked for this crap. I mean, if you're going to wank me, wank me for being a Mary Sue-burning She-Hitler. That area would be much more bountiful. Unfortunately, the glory days are over, and my Nazis have mostly retired. Better luck next time.

Oh sweet merciful gos almighty not this again.

Every time someone brings up rapefic, the rabid people who don't like it get holier-than-thou and infer that the people who DO like it are sick, and the rabid people who DO like it get all OMFG U TAEK MI RIGHTS AWEY56^%&#%#%$$^, and it just makes me wanna hurl.

It's difficult, really - if you say 'don't like it? don't read it' you're violating an f_w law and putting full onus on the clicker, but it IS a logical argument - why not hit the back button? OTOH, of you say the writer shouldn't post it you're fully blaming THEM.

Personally, I'll read almost anything well-written. Poorly-done rapefic insults me not because it is rapefic but because ANYTHING of shit quality posted online with a 'NO FLAEMS!11!!1!! IS MI F1RST FICCY!!!!!@#w44wa5765387TWELVE~!!!' insults me.

The internet is not your sandbox to play in however you want. If you are a beginning writer, for godsake use the valid crit you get, poing at the valid good reviews, and ignore the gushing dreck and flames. Flames are pathetic in and of themselves. They are words on a screen from an anonymous coward - why let them break your heart?

(*cough*)

(*shoves soapbox under bed*)

But then, I'm a cynical, blackhearted artsybint who's had profs tear her work limb-from-limb weekly, so. I'm also an ungodly perfectionist and I cannot fathom posting work full of typos and spelling errors and grammar-howling-in-agony in a public forum. Being a beginning artist is different, because everyone sucks when they start, but with writing there is no excuse for leaving it errorladen. There are spelling and grammar-checkers to use. There are peers to annoy.

If you're titillated by rape fantasy, okay. I'm not, but I'm titillated by bondage, so. (*shrug*)

It's a matter of tolerance, when it all comes down to it.

...Wow, that was long, meandering and pointless. Pardon my logorrhea.

Are you sure you're not me?

And word on poorly written/proofed/spellchecked fics being insulting. Many an otherwise titillating fic has taken me out of the moment by, for example, conflating "your" and "you're."

Well if folks did that then the wank would disappear like a puff of smoke.

I'll just add that just because someone likes or is intrigued by something that happens in a fanfic it doesn't mean they approve of the same action in Real Life.

I don't mind it when folks use things like syrup or whipped cream as lube, but I'm not gonna start telling people to chuck their KY Jelly.

As the original poster of the topic on fanficrants, just a note.

Yes, I questioned the "HAWT!!!111" response to rapefic. No, I don't understand why people would find it "hot". Intriguing and train-wrecky, yes; titillating and possibly arousing, yes - but not in a way that I find desirable or sexy. In my books and to my understanding, rape is a situation that should be handled carefully and not glorified for either victim or attacker. So, when faced with the *rapes XXXXX* situation for the first time, to say I was taken aback is putting it lightly.

I brought the topic up as an honest question: "Why do people have this response?" And yes, [info]starza, my natural bias is to recoil from both rapefic and "hawt!" response, thus the title of the lj-cut. I'm not on fandomcliches (fanficcliches?), so I didn't know the topic had come up there, too.

Believe me, when I posted the topic, I had no inkling that it was going to turn into a circus of dead horses (not only those who their point of view to someone who hadn't read the argument before - thankyou, but also those who immediately placed their hand on their forehead and bemoaned "Oh, we've seen this before!!!" and chastised me in assorted ways for bringing the topic up, plus all the varying opinions between), let alone end up here.

Oh well, cross one item off my 'to do' list for the week: Get [info]fandom_wanked.

seldear on lj.
