LJ Bringin' Da Wank...
LJ decides to do away with Invite Codes and Trial Periods!

By and large, The People are happy! (yay...) Some intelligent questions are raised about trolls and how to stop them if there are no codes. Wank ensues.

With no more invite codes, this has the potential to get very very funny ugly. And wanky, let's not forget wanky.

Er, I'm gonna have to side with the folks who are a worried about this. They do have a point, this has real potential to come back and bite LJ in the ass is a huge way.

Totally agreed there.

Icz, I think I'm just going to make myself your personal "yes" woman, because I always agree with you. May I walk behind you and play theme music on a boom box?

Oh I don't disagree with those who think there will be problems. I think that's a given. ;) But this particular girl just went ON AND ON AND ON....

And yeah, if she was really being ignored and stuff I feel bad for her, etc. But isn't there another place she could deal with her issues? :P

The ever helpful LJ Abuse team

While I'm all for trial memberships and no invite codes (I've given codes to people who never used them or else got bored after a week and either deleted their LJs or abandoned them), I can see where riot's coming from.

I've found LJ Abuse team has always been less than helpful, in my own personal experience and from what others have dealt with with them. Self-described "troll and proud of it" folks like tephra are pretty much small potatoes-- the drive by insult and running away, I don't know if she's ever launched a harrassment campaign against a user or group of users so I don't see her (I think it's a her, the delivery seems rather female but then I've been fooled before) as ToSs-worthy. But with all the _wanks being ToSsed and communities promoting self-destructive and potentially deadly illnesses as a "lifestyle" like the many pro-ana and pro-mia communities are allowed to stay?

While I don't know if there will be an actual troll or even sockpuppet onslaught (people can create those with codes), I see that LJ Abuse team would end up being about as unhelpful as ever, likely even worse with increased workload.

I dunno. I mean, a wanker can pay for a journal and hand out invite codes to all their wanker buddies and make themselves sockpuppets as easily as anything else. The invite codes really don't mean THAT much.
Livejournal didn't have invite codes when I joined, and, having a free journal, I only got to generate one when things went to invite codes. I had several friends over the years since that I would've liked to give invite codes, but what could I do? They had to go wander around and find other people to give 'em one.
(Besides, doesn't LJ have a codes community, too? What's the point of having them if all someone has to do, when they want to make a sockpuppet or wank community, is go to a code community and get one?)

True. But, really--what's to stop people NOW?

It's a similar situation to the one that happened here this summer. People were reckless about distributing codes, and there were a bunch of minors on the site. Imagine over at LJ.

I don't really think codes do that much unless the community is ever-vigilant. It works on JF, which is less than 1/500th of the scale that LJ is. (I mean that literally--there are 1300 JFs, compared to 720,000 LJs.) It just seems like more of a hassle on LJ.

Though you're right in that this could bite LJ in the ass, I think it's good they're taking this risk.

Every time I use it, someone says something to that effect.
I almost broke my toe a couple months back, and I took a pic to show people, and thought, "Hey, icon idea!"
I find it makes a good, "Minions, BEHAVE!" kind of icon.

Ditto. I figure I'll get a lot of use out of them if I can use them to "gift" people with paid account time. More than I would have with the old system, anyway.

Reading over some of these responses, a lot of lj-users act like they actually *did* something special to get these codes. So, you get a couple more with a paid account, big wanky deal. Paid accounts offer more benefits than just "more codes"... so what's the big deal about the code thing?

I really don't see what the big deal is. I mean, I never had a code.

I just wanted a LJ, so I dug out my credit card and bought one. I have never had a free account.

And, hey, the really, really dedicated trolls could've been doing the same thing. *g*

That's what I did too -- just bought an account when I decided I wanted an LJ. I had maybe two days without a paid account when mine first expired, and have had a paid account ever since.

I guess this trial thing and codes or no codes depends on what the goal of Live Journal really is. If they want more paid accounts, I think the trial account thing will work extremely well for them because a heck of a lot more people will be inclined to pay... that, or beg for codes. Still, more would probably pay than currently do, because people who might have paid, but don't know anyone with codes will get a chance to try it out first before plunking down the cash.

If money is no object (and, I seriously doubt that is the case), then they should do away with codes altogether. Of course, having codes probably makes people inclined towards paying vs. not... they can give out codes to their friends, start communities, RPG's, etc. IF they don't need codes to do those things and don't care about the other paid features, they may not pay.

I am kinda like 'eh, whatever' on the whole thing... LJ has been well behaved lately and I'd like it to stay that way. If a rush of free/trial accounts causes LJ to slow down, I admit I'll be slightly irritated.

You know, if the trolls really do overrun LJ and all, they can always reinstate invite codes. It's one of those privileges that comes with Being In Charge. Like getting to pick a goat as a spokesmammal.
